Each year thousands of migrants risk their lives crossing the sea to the Italian coast. Wrecks are frequent and devastating but dedicated teams of rescuers work tirelessly to bring them ashore safely.

"Even though continents are still, we have a human drift". The island of Lampedusa receives hundreds of migrants each year, most of them rescued from the sea by the coastguard. The boats are overcrowded and unsafe, yet despite the risk many are desperate to start new lives. Aziz, a translator for the police, understands their crisis: "When I came knocking this country opened its doors to me. I'm proud to be giving back".

The Producers

Pietro Novello is a documentary filmmaker and freelance sound recordist for film and TV, based in London. Passionate about contemporary social and anthropological issues, he is always searching for inspiring stories. Graduated with First Class Honours BA Film Production at the Arts University Bournemouth (UK), he has been making several short projects on the immigration topic, leading to the making of “Continental Drift”. He is currently at research stage for his next short documentary.

Alexander Graeme is a documentary filmmaker and photographer based in the UK. He is interested in uniquely human stories, the effects of pop culture and blurring boundaries between fact and fiction. Aside from producing “Continental Drift” he has worked on projects about mental health, homelessness and political instability. He is currently researching his debut feature length documentary exploring music and identity in the United States.
