Sex & Lies

The story behind sex slavery in South Africa

Sex & Lies For many women, sex slavery is the only viable means of escape from the destitution of their homeland. This intimate look at the fiercely competitive multi-billion dollar skin trade explores viewpoints from the government, clubowners, and the women themselves.
Living as girlfriends and mistresses or dancers for wealthy clubowners, Eastern European, Thai, and South East Asian women work in order to send what little money they get to relatives and loved ones back home, one Thai woman explains while hiding her face behind her hair. They have come to South Africa via the powerful Asian mafia, which provides them with the false documentation that enables them to enter the country, and which renders them the property and pawns of this complex underground web.

Sitting comfortably at a table in his upscale club, one owner tells of his one-man crusade against government attempts at closing down the sex industry. He has been busted numerous times by South African authorities and states that the sale of human flesh should be legal while insisting that he would never knowledgeably employ an illegal alien. Though much easier to get the necessary papers and passports which would allow them to be shipped elsewhere from certain Southern African countries, the newly-instituted Alien Investigation Taskforce in South Africa is both cracking down on false documents and hitting the clubowners where it hurts. The South African government struggles with the many club owners who employ illegal aliens from poverty-stricken areas, orchestrating busts, closing clubs, and arresting both prostitutes and owners alike. Watch as the task force conducts its raid of a popular nightclub, taking over forty illegal women into custody. The raid served as a wake-up call for other clubs in the area. While the government works fervently to eradicate this problem, the fight against illegal immigration and prostitution has uncovered only a tiny fraction of this massive international trade. Government officials tell of their own encounters with the perpetrators and the frustration of trying to find secret doorways to this hidden world, while the women perform dutifully in what they see as a better way of life than the one they've known.
