The Doomsday Cult

Mass suicide or massacre?

The Doomsday Cult In one of the first reports from the massacre site in Kanunga, we discover how and why the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments committed murder on a gruesome scale.
On the floor of the sect's church lie the blackened bodies of cult followers who were led to their deaths. "We found many dead, everywhere you saw skulls - they looked like burned cobblestones", describes one eyewitness. The lifestyle of this extraordinary cult is laid bare by neighbours. Cult members used sign language only. They took two meals a day, had to abstain from sex and were not allowed soap. Followers wore green uniforms the leaders wore black. All followers had to give their possessions to the leaders, religious leaders who were viewed as sacred to these Ugandans. These were the basic tenets of cult life before it came to a close when the end of the world foretold by cult leaders did not happen. "They sold cows, very quick and cheap." Then it seems they bought petrol for the fateful mass suicide. Locals are incredulous at how this religious sect came to such a bloody end. Officials explain how the cult won support, building schools, stores & churches. Yet through accounts here it is all too clear how the cult ended in death.
