Idealistic and inexperienced, a crew of four embark on a rescue mission to the Mediterranean

Gangway to a Future In Rotterdam, an untrained crew partners up with a dedicated yet naive team of volunteers to take an old trawler to the Mediterranean to help with the refugee crisis. Following a host of setbacks, the crew navigate their way to the Libyan coast, where thousands are desperately attempting the perilous crossing to Italy. Though not everyone can be saved, their ambitious rescue mission enables some to take their first steps towards a new life.

The Producers


René Hazekamp - Director

René (1962, the Netherlands) was educated in film at the RITCS in Brussels. He has been making short dance films since 1988 for his own film company Cendrillon. Commissioned by VPRO's Lola da Musica, René has made seven music documentaries. In recent years he has mainly made documentaries about people close to home. His recent titles include The Unplaceables (2012), CircusTime (2013), and The Anti-Noah (2016). René lives and works in Rotterdam.
