Trump & the Ethics Of Foreign Aid

The real-world repercussions of Evangelical pressure on US Aid policy

Trump & the Ethics Of Foreign Aid One of President Trump's first acts in office was to sign an order tying US foreign aid to the issue of abortion. We see the knock-on effects of the pro-life policy unfold in real time in Mozambique.
Volunteers from an aid organisation called AMODEFA gather in the province of Gaza, Mozambique. The news is dire. "Our programme, DREAMS... It will be closing in exactly three days", says Sebastiano Muthisse. Since 1989, the multi-agency project had focused on spreading the message of contraception to the vulnerable. Two-thirds of AMODEFA's funding came from the US government, but Trump's fresh order put a stop to charities like this receiving American aid, as they advise on abortion. "I don't see any good coming out of this", says one volunteer, as the agency desperately seeks alternative funding to cover a whole host of work in the region. Marie Stopes International suggests the loss of similar services worldwide could lead to 21,700 maternal deaths in President Trump’s first term of office.
