Karen Nettleton is desperate to bring her grandchildren and great-grandchildren back to Australia. After her daughter Tara converts to Islam and marries the soon-to-be infamous Khaled Sharrouf, the radicalised jihadist couple flee from Australia with their five children to join the Islamic State in Syria. As her eldest grandsons begin attending ISIS camps, and her 13 year-old granddaughter falls pregnant with the child of her father's friend she is forced to marry, Karen is worried she'll never see her family again. After her daughter dies in hospital and her son-in-law and two eldest grandsons are killed in an airstrike, Karen is more determined than ever to get her grandchildren and great-grandchildren out of Syria. After attempts are foiled by bombings, funding and opposition of the Australian government, Karen tries one last desperate attempt to locate and extract her family. After seeking refuge in the Al-Hawl refugee camp in Syria, Karen's grandchildren plead with her to find them quickly and take them and their children out of the camp. With one of her granddaughters soon to give birth, Karen is in a race against time to rescue them all.
