Why is Singapore top of the class? Singapore is world leading in primary and secondary education, with students raised on a diet of high-stakes testing and unique methods. But is the pressure and work-life balance too much for children?
Former Minister of Education Lu Mei says Singapore's key to success lies in forward thinking. "We are not educating our children for today, not for tomorrow, [but] for 20 years’ time", says Mei. But with many children cramming at after school tuition classes, some feel the culture of competition has gone too far. "It did not bring the best out of me", says top student Charmaine Olay, diagnosed with depression and anxiety.
