In Nigeria, a scientific and communal effort has lead to three years without a single case of of polio. We track this monumental achievement, and the possible end to the wild virus in the country.
Just decades after Nigeria had the highest caseload of polio in Africa, the country is set to be declared free of the debilitating virus. Now health workers search for Nigeria's last unvaccinated children.
"We are ensuring that every child eligible is vaccinated", says health volunteer Sebastian Obache. He is up against Boko Haram and other cultural and religious factions who resist the vaccination movement. "Together we will eradicate the disease", says Imam Yahaya Bello Abubakar. Some 20,000 women have been trained as vaccine ambassadors, and the military have been instructed to vaccinate children.
