A Hospital at War With COVID-19

Swiss have second highest infection rate

A Hospital at War With COVID-19 Medical Professionals in Switzerland are scrambling to increase their capacity to treat COVID-19 patients. The situation is currently calm, but many fear a tsunami of cases is coming their way.
“This is not a leap into the unknown, it’s a known pathology”, says Prof. Mauro Oddo - confident that his hospital can give effective treatment to patients coming in with Coronavirus. His worry, however, is that the ward will be overwhelmed in the coming days. He implores people to heed social distancing advice issued by the government. “If we can curb the contagion outside, we’ll have fewer patients”, he says. A dedicated hotline has been set up for the staff at CHUV who start to display symptoms. Floraine Bornet, one of the phone operators, lauds the bravery of the staff but shares their concern that they keep themselves protected for the sake of others. "They do not want to spread the disease”, says Bornet.
