As the COVID-19 pandemic was hitting the nation of Georgia last year, residents of this small country in the Caucus mountains turned to an unlikely source: two Georgian doctors who had immigrated to the United States, and had already had months of experience battling the pandemic.
From eight time zones away and almost entirely using social media, Dr. Nana Gegetchkori in New York City and Dr. Zurab Guruli in Jackson, Mississippi became viral sensations in their home country, spreading science-based strategies for treating the emerging disease and remotely consulting on the care of hundreds of their fellow Georgians.
