Knocking on Heaven's Door

Some Thai communities go to great lengths to get the gods' attention

Knocking on Heaven's Door A fascinating look into the lengths some Thai communities will go to in order to provoke their Gods, and be blessed with rain.
The name of the game is to act as disgustingly and repulsively as possible. This festival of gross indulgence aims to provoke the Gods to react and shower the town with rain to wash the evil away. Festival goers cross-dress and get drunk. "It’s all about sex, promiscuity and phallic symbols", says anthropologist, Professor Suriya Samuutkupt. "There is no social order and society becomes chaotic." The aim, says Samuutkupt, is "for the Creator in Heaven to release the rain to stop the behaviour and let us go on growing rice." If the Gods don't respond, the revellers send up giant home-made rockets to knock on heaven's door. This time, it appears the Gods were listening - as they showered the festival in rain.
