Do Native American tribes buying their land back start a commercial approach to social justice?
From 1877 to 1934 the U.S. government appropriated tens of millions of acres of Native American land. In recent years there has been a growing movement among Native Americans to reclaim these lands.
In 1887, the U.S. government appropriated the land of the Yurok Tribe. 'As America grew, its appetite grew as well. Its need for lumber, for building supplies', explains the tribe's Vice-Chair. Many tribes are now demanding the return of appropriated land as a matter of compensation: 'at some point, we would hope that the government would see that what they did was wrong', says the Nez Percé tribe's Vice-Chair. But much of the land has had to simply be bought back.
