In 1982, after eleven years of searching, the reincarnation of the Karmapa Lama was located in Tibet. The Karmapa Lama is head of the Black Hat sect and is one of the highest ranking Lamas in Tibetan Buddhism. His discovery was accepted by the Beijing government and the Dalai Lama.
It is believed that the 15 year old boy fled Tibet because he was unhappy at his lack of freedom and the poor level of teaching he was receiving.
