Many Moldovans fear that Putin may have his eye on their small nation, which borders Ukraine. At one of Moldova's southernmost border crossing points, there is a constant stream of Ukrainians fleeing the war - a grim reminder of the devastation of war to Moldovans. Though it's Europe's poorest country, Moldova has taken in more Ukrainian refugees per capita than any nation. "We've got a warm welcome. We've been given shelter and everyone is friendly", says Olga, who fled Odesa. Despite Moldovan's generosity, some Ukrainians are nervous about staying so close to the conflict. "I want to go further away, so no one can bomb me and kill me there", says one refugee. Their fear is perhaps justified, as Moldova bears many similarities to Ukraine; aside from its post-Soviet status, it's also not a member of the EU or NATO. "Nobody appears safe - not only Russia's immediate neighbors. The sabre-rattling and mentioning of nuclear weapons is giving pause to many people", says Mihai Popșoi, deputy speaker of the Moldovan Parliament. Moldova's strategy for avoiding conflict is neutrality, and staying out of NATO. Time will tell if this is enough to protect the nation.
