Fight or Flight

Three protagonists, three cities, three stories of human rights defenders committed to defending human rights in Iraq

Fight or Flight Kamaran, Jazmine and Ali are three young Iraqi human rights defenders. Some have been forced to flee. Others continue to live in Iraq under threat. All have risked their lives and those of their loved ones to peacefully defend human rights in Iraq. Fight or Flight mixes collective moments of activism with fragments of their private lives. The documentary will tell about the struggles, challenges, hopes and fears of those who defend the right to water, freedom of expression, women and civil rights in a war-torn country like Iraq.
Being an activist and being someone who is exposed or known is a risk, you fear for yourself and your family’, says Jazmine, who has fled Baghdad for Turkey to protect her family. Following 2019’s October Revolution, thousands of activists were killed or injured while protesting Iraq’s political turmoil. ‘The main thing that I feel is powerless, that we can’t immediately change the situation’, says Kamaran, a civil activist.
