Tourism's Slow Recovery One of Asia's poorest countries, Nepal is heavily dependent on tourism. But like the rest of Asia, despite the end of covid restrictions, the tourism industry is struggling to recover.
Earthquakes have hindered progress, as has the Russia-Ukraine war. Tourism developer Adam Tripathi says that Nepalese tourism's "main problem" is now high airfares. Many Nepalese now rely on payments from relatives who have left the country to find work. In 2023, things are very gradually starting to pick up. Locals are optimistic: "Nepal is a heavenly place" says guesthouse owner Bishnu Kamari Gurung.
