Stolen Fish

Chinese fishing in the Gambia

Stolen Fish The arrival of Chinese fishmeal factories in the Gambia has dramatically changed the lives of the local people. Stolen Fish gives an intimate frame for the story of the stolen development of West Africa and the fishermen living through it.
Africa's smallest nation, the Gambia, is running out of fish: "before you'll just stand here and see fish jumping, but now it's no more... overfishing" says Abou, a local fisherman. Protests are either ignored or punished. "The government seems not to be doing any effort, because we have seen so many activists arrested in the Gambia" says a speaker at a council meeting. Instead international fishing businesses continue to flourish, and the promises of hundreds of jobs have turned out to be an illusionary mirage. Searching for a life elsewhere often proves deadly: "I learnt four of my friends died during the journey" says Paul.
