Heroes and Gangsters

The fall of Joseph Estrada

Heroes and Gangsters The former movie star President of the Philippines is hoping for a happy ending to the greatest scandal yet to rock his presidency. But evidence is mounting that the “champion of the poor” stole from his own people.
The latest allegation that Estrada took hefty payoffs from illegal gambling syndicates is just the tip of the iceberg of corruption stories surrounding the President. The colourful actor who came to power two years ago stands accused of raking in nearly $11 million in illegal gambling profits - protection money from a circle of Philippine crime bosses. The money has gone into million dollar bank accounts, insider trading and mansions for Estrada’s five mistresses. Estrada denies the charges, but his accusers say they are ready to present a mountain of evidence. Former allies are joining old enemies to call for his resignation. “The scandals are getting more, the outrage is getting more”, says Arroyo, a political rival. ABC Australia investigates from the country.

In 2001 Estrada was impeached, the first Asian leader to undergo such a judgement.
