Greenland: Hot Property

A nation caught between dreams of freedom and Trump

Greenland: Hot Property It's the world's largest island and one of the most remote places on earth - and now the most famous global property developer wants to buy it. ABC travels to the icy territory to find out why.
Greenland possesses potentially enormous wealth in the form of critical minerals buried beneath its ice. The key question is who will ultimately profit from these vast, untapped resources. Mineral Resources Minister Naaja Nathanielsen explains "the mineral sector is not an easy sector to get into. It's very high risk, long term, so it requires a lot of capital and we don't have that". While Trump is the most aggressive, many foreign agents are keen to benefit from Greenland's resources, and some Greenlanders recognise the need to play a role in global trade. Svend Hardenberg is head of an Australian-led project to mine a massive rare earths deposit. "I'm no way a supporter of Trump. But we need to rethink our own place in the world." Trapped between colonising powers, and with a need to refigure its own place in the world, Greenland faces a huge dilemma. Citizen Hans Zeeb puts it plainly: “we've been colonised for many years, so we don't want to be colonised anymore”.
