Israel's Endgame in Gaza
Is population transfer Israel's goal?
Israel’s war on Gaza has induced an unprecedented humanitarian disaster. And with calls by Israeli politicians to permanently expel Palestinians from the Strip and into Jordan and Egypt, fear is growing of yet another forced population transfer. An Israeli minister has even called the current war the “Gaza Nakba”. Lawyer Diana Buttu points out that from Israel’s perspective, this is not so much a disaster, but intentional policy. “These plans of ethnic cleansing have long been the position of the Zionist movement; we’re seeing them play out in real time.” Meanwhile, in the occupied West Bank, the Israeli army and settlers are waging a dangerous shadow war. They have walled in most urban areas, and designated hundreds of villages as closed military zones, making safety impossible. Amira Jajeh is a refugee from Gaza City. “I believe I will go back home, but I will take the tent with me, because our homes were bombed and destroyed.” She does not believe this is the end of her home country, but knows it will never be the same if Israel continues its project.
