Dying For Oil

The South Sudanese villages being destroyed to make way for oil extraction

Dying For Oil The systematic razing of villages in South Sudan to clear the way for drilling oil. Mercenaries fight SPLA rebels in the struggle for control over the country's resources.
This feature visits burnt villages in Sudan where oil is exacerbating bitter religious conflict. "The government militia was firing indiscriminately... people were running." The situation may deteriorate with plans to sell oil concessions as far south as the Ugandan border. These are the areas next in line for armed clearance. The UN warns there could be famine this year, largely because of oil-related displacement. Meanwhile, Christian Aid predicts that the Sudanese campaign is only a foretaste of what will happen in many developing countries if the world continues to turn a blind eye to civilian suffering in the name of profit. The British charity urges all foreign companies involved in the oil industry to suspend operations.
