Temple Wars

India's grandest mosque has a new Imam

Temple Wars From the splendour of the Jama Masjid, the “Friday Mosque”, Syed Ahmed Bukhari takes the baton from his sick and elderly father.
The 400 year old title connects the family to its mighty past, when the moghul empire ruled India. “It is the misfortune of Muslims. Those who have ruled this country for 900 years are today slaves”, says the new Imam. The scars remain fresh from 1992 when Hindu zealots stormed and demolished the 16th-century Bari mosque at Ayodhya; claiming it was built on top of the birthplace of the Hindu God - Ram. Over 2000 people were killed in the riots which followed. Now the two communities are polarised like never before.
