00:10: The call
for Jihad. Demonstrations after Friday prayers at Cairo’s Al-Azhar University
Mosque.
00:25: The
angry crowd is calling for Arab leaders to let them enter holy war against
Israel.
00:37: Speaker 1: I say Ariel Sharon and the
Jews do not believe that Allah can see what they are doing.
00:45: Speaker 2: Armed with the Quran we are
ready for battle. There is no God but Allah. Muslims will triumph.
00:57: At
anti-Israel and anti-Semitic demonstrations in the Arab world, there is only
mockery and derision for US Secretary of State Colin Powell’s Far East
investigation mission.
01:14: At the
Al-Azhar Mosque, Mohammed Sajid-Dardai, the most
important Islamic cleric in Egypt, honours the suicide bombers of Hamas. Each
one is declared a martyr of Allah in the fight against Israeli aggressors.
Anyone who says otherwise is a liar, preaches the sheikh.
01:41: Mohammed Sajid-Dardai:
All of you who follow the word of Mohammed, peace be with you – power is life. The
power that Allah loves cannot relinquish holy places. Weakness means death.
02:08: 1,555
Israeli civilians have been murdered by Arabs since 1948, the year of its
founding. 470 of them have been killed since September 2000, the beginning of
the second “Intifada”. The battle is over, and the corpse counting beings. The
Palestinians and their allies mourn the civilians killed by the Israeli army in
Jenin. One such ally is Essam el-Erian,
an influential member of the banned Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.
02:51: Essam el-Erian (English): People don’t have the weapons to fight
against the tanks and Apache helicopters. If they have no weapons, then they have to blow themselves up, turns themselves into bombs. If
they have weapons however, they can fight.
03:11: Weapons
seized by the Israeli army in occupied Palestinian Territories, now showcased
at the Jerusalem Press Centre. This is Sharon’s loot from his anti-terrorist
campaign. In the eyes of his enemies, Sharon is a bloodsucking caricature.
03:37: Among
Egypt’s youth anti-American sentiment is growing. Police are using water
cannons and tear gas on the Cairo campus. The uproar threatens to get out of
control. But the Mubarak regime supports the youth’s concerns when it benefits
its foreign policy. Namely in the criticism of US foreign policy, which Egypt
views as too Israel-friendly.
04:11: Speaker 3 (English): We want rights for
Palestinians, that’s all we want.
04:20: Anti-Israel
sentiment is also a good distraction technique for the Egyptian government,
allowing it to divert attention from the country’s economic woes and domestic
instability. The secret police have kept a lid on the number of radical Islamists
following the terror attacks of the 90s. Omnipresent tourist police create a
sense of security for the tourist during their stay. Supported, as ever, by
enterprising souvenir traders.
04:59: Speaker 4: There are too many tourist
police. It is for the safety and security of the tourist and
also for the Egyptians.
05:11: Welcome
to Egypt. The dream was that after the Israeli-Egypt peace agreement, Israelis
would start vacationing in the land of the pyramids. The dream was soon over. Today
Islamist hardliners are breaking ties with Israel.
05:29: Essam el-Erian
(English): All contracts must now be terminated. Sharon’s policy is not
only detrimental to Palestinians, but also to Egyptians and all Arab
governments.
05:45: In
Cairo’s Center for Political and Strategic Studies,
Egypt’s political science elite analyse the core issue of the conflict.
05:57: Speaker 5: Three issues in particular stand out. Firstly
Palestinian refugees, secondly the status of Jerusalem, and thirdly the
creation of Palestinian state with full sovereignty. For the Israelis one thing
is impossible to accept – the right of Palestinian refugees to return to
Palestine.
06:30 And
already radical peace opponents have used this open a new front in southern
Lebanon.
06:58 Nevertheless,
the Egyptian leadership sees peace with Israel as a guarantor for the security
of Egypt.
