Williams: I love to sing
all sorts of songs
but as they say, when in Rome -- or more precisely when in the Vatican, sing like a saint -- and around here, that means Gregorian chant.
19:23
But if Im to go Gregorian, I need help.
19:38
And where better to start than with an Aussie boy from the bush -- Father Joseph Redfern, from Forbes. Hes at the Vatican to study the Gregorian Chant.
Joseph:
Its a real art form, and it takes a long time to learn, but its wonderful. It is spiritually uplifting, and most people would recognise that. Even though they cant sing it, they would say, oh I just love Gregorian chant.
19:51
Joseph:
So Ill sing up to the asterisk here. And then everyone joins in.
Williams:
Right.

Singing
20:10
Joseph:
You see, it sounds Greek, doesnt it, you you?Williams: Yeah. It all sounds Greek to me!
20:35
Williams: I am ready for the world. I am fully trained, ready to go ahead?Joseph: Well, it might take a little while longer. If you could stay in Rome for another six months, I could probably train you up a little bit more. Williams: When in Rome. And maybe make me a Catholic at the same time. Thats a challengeJoseph: Thats the bigger challenge, perhaps.
20:41
Williams:
I dont have six months. I need the Gregorian in a Day fast track and maybe this is my man. After all Raimundo Martinez already sings for the pope.
Singing
Williams: Whats it like to sing for the Pope.
20:58
Raimundo:
Its a strange thing, because I should be more tense, more nervous, but when Im there I just start singing and I do my best.
21:28
Williams and Raimundo sing
Williams:
Am I ready for the Pope? Raimundo: Yes I think so. 22:06
Williams: So, its off to the Sistine chapel and a new career.
22:09
Williams:
All right, all right, so I told a fib -- its just the Vatican and Im only serenading stall holders, and theyre telling me Im bad for business.
22:21
Hmm. Maybe not. Without a single coin in the cap to bless myself with, I leave with nothing more than cold hard rejection.
