Hunting in the mountains requires physical strength. The hunter is exposed to danger. He must be able to shoot, kill, and carry the animals down to the valley. Hunting should be left to men.
10:01:04:10
Women are different. They stay home to protect the house and family. They give life, not take it. That's the difference.

In the Grischun tradition hunting plays a very important role. Public hunting still exists here. After passing the hunting exam anyone may go stalking in autumn.
Only 1% of the nearly 7,000 hunters are women. But over the last few years their numbers have increased continuously.
10:01:42:22
100 years ago the first huntress passed her exam. Netta Beer-Camen was one of the pioneer women. Her father Albert Camen encouraged her.
His hunting group called her "Little Hunter".
At 72 years of age Liseli Frey is the oldest active huntress in Grischun. She is known as "The Hunting Grandmother".

Christina Gasparini
10:02:13:09
Personally I wouldn't want to hunt. I could not aim at an animal.

Brigitta Derungs
10:02:21:11
I believe women should not go hunting, there are enough hunters.
Annalea Salis
10:02:28:17
I believe hunting is a man's job. This has nothing to do with women's liberation, but women have no business there.

Susanne Maissen
10:02:41:06
My name is Susanne Maissen, I am studying to become a landscaper in Berne and I hunt.
To hunt in Grischun you need to be persevering and tough and know the hunting laws.
It's important to observe wildlife all through the year so you know where they can be found in autumn. Safe gun handling is also important.

Claudio Hässig
10:03:48:05
Women shoot better than men.

Men Franziscus
10:03:55:05
Many women have learned their hunting skills from men. They accompany them for a few years and then they are just as good as the men.

Martino Della Valle
10:04:31:12
Generally I don't mind that women go hunting. They may even be more conscientious than men. Though in regard to physical strength they are inferior. But basically I have nothing against women hunters.

Anna Mathis
10:04:55:06
My name is Anna Mathis, I'm from Scuol in the Engadin and a forest engineer. But this summer I'm a shepherd. Autumns I go hunting.
My father has taken my two sisters and me hunting since we were small. I was always fascinated. Yet I couldn't imagine hunting myself. I found it interesting from a professional point of view, seeing the forest and the game from the view of a hunter. So I took the exam. My passion for it became stronger once I started hunting.

Ursina Thomann
10:05:38:08
My name is Ursina Thomann, I live in Sils. I'm a nurse and have been hunting for 33 years. I was the first woman in Grischun to preside over a regional hunting group.
For 15 years I was president of the Annarosa group, in the only district with a female name.
I learned the skills from my father. I still hunt the way he did. He was a good hunter. He was my role model.
10:06:18:04
When he found out that I was pregnant and expected my child in June, he said he would not go hunting and instead would care for the child. We arranged to meet where I was hunting and he brought me the baby to nurse every four hours . That was wonderful, and the baby had lots of fresh air. I am very grateful to my father for enabling me to keep on hunting.

Pirmina Nay-Caminada
10:06:59:18
My name is Pirmina Nay-Caminada. I used to be a dress maker; then I became an ornithologist. I have been hunting for 11 years. You need certain qualities to hunt. Even when I was a small girl I knew that I would go hunting when I grew up. I never thought that it would not be possible or considered unnatural, just because I am a women. It was quite clear to me that I would become a hunter.

Susanne Maissen
10:08:19:11
I never had any problem being accepted by men. I've always been together more with men than with women. It is easier to get along with men. In our region women hunters are considered equal.

Anna Mathis
10:08:44:09
I still haven't joined a hunting club. It's unusual, but I just wouldn't like it there. Maybe because there are only men. They have ideas I don't like. Many have goals which mean nothing to me. For example, I don't consider trophies important. It doesn't matter to me how many animals I shoot. I am interested in the hunting experience as such. If I shoot something, I am pleased; if not, that's fine, too. I don't need to compete with others. I could care less about that.

Ursina Thomann
10:11:31:17
That's an older lad; you can tell it from the big testicles. And that is bird food. This year they're well fed. I utilise the entire animal. I use the meat to cook goulash and ragout and I make oil from the fat. It's the base for the salve I make from medicinal herbs. The marmot oil contains natural cortisone. The fur is made into leather and the pretty teeth into jewellery.
10:12:17:19
This is a support frame for marmots which I designed. It happened like this: One day I had killed so many marmots that my fingers hurt from carrying them. I went to the saddler and had him make this frame. You can simply hang the marmots on a snap hook and your hands are free. It is very comfortable to carry.

Ricardo Thomann
10:12:53:17
I go hunting with my mother because I don't have to walk so far. It would be much more strenuous with my father. We would shoot larger animals with him, but the chances for success are much better with my mother.

Susanne Maissen
10:13:15:13
After I passed the hunting exam I needed my own gun. My grandfather wanted to give me his 40-year-old gun. But I didn't want a gun that old. So I bought a new one, therefore I had saved money for several years. So I went with my uncle to the gun shop. I saw this special year 2000 model. That's the year I passed the hunting exam. There are only 150 of these guns. Granted, it was expensive; but I wanted it.
10:13:59:06
My gun is very light, ideal for a woman. I also had an octagonal barrel mounted. It gives the gun a heavier, more robust character. It's important to me to keep the gun clean. I really enjoy doing it. Some might find it strange that I clean it all the time, but it's in prime condition. The more expensive something is, the more you appreciate it.

Ursina Thomann
10:14:34:18
My father gave me this gun when I passed the hunting exam. My mother gave it to him when they married. She bought it from Father Lozza, a notorious poacher. I like to hunt with it. My daughter Ladina glued this picture on it 20 years ago. It's my lucky charm.

Anna Mathis
10:15:04:02
I don't have my own rifle, only a shot gun which my father gave me. I rent a rifle for the 3 weeks of hunting season. I'm really not a gun freak. Only a few can understand why a hunter doesn't own her own rifle.

Pirmina Nay-Caminada
10:15:30:16
Fog and wind are poor conditions for hunting. Today the wind is shifting from one side to the other. My expectations for today wheren't very high. I waited a long time and hoped that the fog would lift. I did hear the animals, but I couldn't see anything. Just when I was about to quit, a chamois appeared out of the fog. It had only one horn, and I was quite familiar with it. I was able to react quickly and fired. After firing I always wait a while. I do this out of respect and to allow the soul of the animal to leave the body.

Susanne Maissen
10:17:12:16
Prior to shooting I don't thought about the results; but when I hit the animal and it fell down my knees started to shake. Only then did it hit me that I had just killed a living being.

Ursina Thomann
10:17:31:11
It don't have to force myself, but when I aim at an animal that is its death sentence. I believe one needs a certain amount of guts.

Anna Mathis
10:17:48:21
The feeling that I get when aiming at an animal is indescribable. don't notice anything else around me. I'm in my own world. To analyse this would destroy the magic.

Pirmina Nay-Caminada
10:18:45:20
I bury the rest, the intestines. My respect for animals which will graze here later requires me to do so.
10:19:33:13
I am proud when I bring an animal home. Nowadays, when you can buy everything in a store it may sound strange to say that you brought home food. But to me it's an intense feeling bringing the bounty home and showing it to my family. Just like a cat likes to show the mouse before eating it.
10:20:41:21
Alexi, my husband, has been hunting with me. But he isn't passionate about it. The urge to go off and hunt is not in his blood.

Pirmina Nay Caminada in dialog with her daughter.
10:21:33:24
-It stinks!
It doesn't stink, it smells. Do you want to help, too?
-It's hard.
Maybe from the other side. Do you like doing this?
-Is this blue skin?
Yes, this is how the skin looks on the inside and this is the fat.
-This is hard.
Wait, I'll help you.

Pirmina Nay-Caminada
10:22:13:15
I cut everything into small portions. The meat I want to cook soon goes into the refrigerator. The rest I stick into the freezer. I always write down which animal the meat is from. Later, when I get something out of the freezer I always remember the hunt. Then I relive the moment. I think back to earlier times when man was a hunter-gatherer.
