Car photo+ other stills

These are the last images I have of Beirut – pictures I took from the airport, as I waited to board the flight, one week before the first bombs fell, on this runway…

00.00.33

Looking out of airplane window

The mountains, so peaceful then, now look over a city in ruins.

00.00.44

Anas in car

Anas speaking:

Hello, I am on my way to Jayeta. My name is Anas Abou Hosn

VO: This is Anas – my 12 year old brother. He wants to be a filmmaker.

Anas: I’ll be your host guest for today

VO: He is now stuck in Lebanon. He only holds a Lebanese passport, and therefore his future is not a priority… no one is trying to evacuate him to safety…

(footage shot by Anas)

00.01.07

Streets

Anas: here we’re gonna go on a journey that is beautiful and full of surprises

00.01.28

Anas in car

Anas: we are now heading home from our very nice trip to the beach

Zeina: which you dind’t film

Anas: oh my God! I forgot to film!

00.01.45

Marianne’s stills

This is Marianne – my best friend, a tv presenter, who never left Lebanon because she had faith that it was again becoming ‘the paradise of the east’

(footage of Marianne)

00.01.56

Marianne in street at night

Marianne: I swallowed my nail

Zeina: show me the others

00.02.18

Inside night club

VO: this is Lila Braun where we drank and danced

VO: this the basement where we danced some more

00.02.46

Band

COM

One of Lebanon’s new bands in the New Government, and this is their latest single

00.02.54

Zeid

VO. This is Zeid

Zeid: the concept of spraying a bomb in Lebanon is like a wake up call.

VO: he had just set up a rock band and an indie record label. They were just set to tour the world…

(footage of Zeid)

00.03.25

The beach

00.03.23

Habiba, Mona and dog walking on the beach

VO: These are Habiba and Mona, and Sour their dog – they had a little guest house by the beach in Tyre. They protected this beach, where Green Turtles came every year to lay their eggs…

00.03.54

The sea

VO: This is the sea… the sea… the sea… the sea…

00.04.14

Zeina in car

VO: These are my memories – too bad they are going to be only memories.

This is how I remember Lebanon, and how I will always remember Lebanon.

00.04.29

Still of war and ruins

VO: But I will also remember how everyone stood by and watched my family, my friends and my Lebanon burn…

00.04.39

landscape

VO: The last time Lebanon was on the news, it was during the civil war. And now, another war, and we’re in the headlines again. And the 15 years in between? The years of peace, and happiness, and beauty and ambition and hopes for the future?... Nobody was interested… it wasn’t a story…

00.05.2

Stills of sea, etc

VO: So you have never met this land, or these people before…

VO: Perhaps if you had, you would now care if they live or die…
