INTRO COMMENTARY 1

Thousands of young Kenyans have turned out for a concert aimed at getting them out to vote. The country’s biggest music acts are there – and it’s all fronted by a comedy group called Redykyulass.

Politics here is dominated by the old men: men whose power has been based on patronage, tribal loyalty and, for decades, graft.

With an election looming, these comedians are determined to bring a fresh generation into Kenyan politics, using something you don’t hear much in the offices of the political class – laughter.

They first made their names in political satire under the one-party regime of President Moi – but they continue to lampoon the current President Kibaki and his controversial wife – Lucy.

COMM 2: This is the spoof they staged that helped make Redykyulass household names in Kenya – momentarily fooling the crowd and the press into thinking they were the real thing.

Tony VO: .. she said I can play Rugby, who is your mother? and tried to tell the team how to play… she took a ball from Walter and went to score a try, which the crowd like, the TV guys liked, but she didn’t like it.. …

KJ We’ve been out there talking to young Kenyans just asking them realise you have to vote because you are putting in power the person who is making decisions about your life today and tomorrow

KJ: we’re re defining politics to you, you’ve known politics to be, you go out there heckle, carry the man with the biggest tummy and make sure he’s voted in, and in the process we can fight and beat up each other because we believe anyone not in our camp is an enemy and what we’re saying is politics is a game of interests, go out there and push your interests, your agenda as a young Kenyan.

This time I have to vote, even though it’s one vote, one vote can make a difference, I’ll have to vote.

Kenya has to change, but it’s hard to come by, the same guys want to get back in, when they get back they’ll go back to their old ways. They have to bribe young guys to vote for them. Corruption starts with them, and then translates to the other guys. If change has to come, we have to change everything, from high office until down. We should not be re cycling politicians or ministers we should be getting some new young guys, at least we can give them a shot.

KJ: Redykyulass is heavily inspired by the politics of the day..,

COMM 5: When the First Lady raided the offices of Kenya’s National Newspaper - this was the Redykyulass response..

we were having a good time satirising some grumpy ‘old men’ but there is a serious side to it because the moment you satirise it, the society can step back and say Hey! we thought we were getting change out of the 2002 elections but wait, what kind of change did we get? Is it fundamental, beneficial to I as a citizen?

So here we are as young Kenyan’s, are we going to sit back and let that happen, or go out there ..? … only then will change happen.

VO; George W: ‘ the chances of a youthful person winning an election, particularly a presidential one is remote… …the general public tend to trust more elderly the grey haired , big bellied type of people more than they trust the youth. We probably like any other society, worship wealth, material… so so much, the people tend to support the well endowed financially. We have had in the past the culture of handouts.. for votes, all kinds of favours.. so because of that the people think wow, let me support the elderly person with more resources and even go to him with a problem, a hospital bill, I’m likely to get help, as opposed to a young person who is not well resourced, and the most he or she would give, is ideas.

KJ You can not be in this election process if you don’t have a voters card, lets start there… your voters card is the instrument to put someone in power…

So basically you’re employing people going into you’re civic council or parliament, even the president, so first understand what it is he has to do for you, then you can demand that of him before you give your vote.

KJ: Thirdly, make sure you go and cast your vote on the day and make sure it’s for the person who is pushing your agenda.

COMM 7: Anne Njeri makes the equivalent of £37 a month braiding hair in a local market. The last time she tried to vote, there was a problem.. you need ID in order to get a voters card..

I went to look for an ID, I just got harassed so I left it, they asked for a birth, or school certificate.. the thing is, my dad died and we had a fallout with his family, there’s too much bad blood to go back there to get those documents.

VO KJ: Out of 33 million Kenyans, only 6 mill voted in the last general election. Statistics are telling us 17 million young Kenyans are eligible to register as a voter, but you need an ID card. but not all the 17 million have an ID card, their voice can make a big difference.

COMM cont: Anne has come to the concert looking for answers – and the story she has to tell is of the typical Kenyan problems

Anne sync….. they told me to give them a bribe when I wanted an ID, but I have rent to pay, and a child to look after, so I left it. Where are the ones we voted for who were to fight for us – the helpless?

So you guys can’t help me? I want to vote! I can’t vote empty handed!

The man helped me in there and told me all the steps to take to get one, but if I’m not successful he won’t be here to ask again, will he?

MOI, BODYGUARDS DANCING SKETCH

KJ : Walter played the character of the former president so well, it was amazing.. whatever we did, as Redykyulass… there was satire in there, we were doing social comedy… but the political comedy was our claim to fame.

KJ he played it so well, today there are small kids in Kenya who can’t draw the line between the former president and Walter –who is imitating who.. there is a question running on Radio now where a kid says his favourite politician is Moi because he dances Mdumbolo but he has never danced, to him, Walter was the president.

Walter: ‘I guess the biggest learning we have as a team is to stay focused to your objective which is to entertain

Tony : …we never perform for a political function, it’s all about entertainment, our own lawyers have said there is no way you can take a comedian seriously, the guys are registered comedians… how can they go to court and say seriously that guy did that…that would be the best skit. Legally we are fine, and still fine.

KJ … people thought if Redykyulass can get Moi dancing Mdumbelo, this is a new era, we can actually talk about the president.

Big kev sync

They made Kenyans laugh about these things, and after laughing actually sit back and think, what the hell, I can do something about this..

KJ …as much as it’s comedy or skits on leaders, it’s also a reflection of Kenyan society today, because these leaders did not elect themselves... so you’re throwing it back at Kenyans and telling them, Hey, look at the leaders you are electing into office
