Running V/O: It’s 6.30 am, and six degrees below zero, and a new day is beginning at Moscow’s school for Tycoons. 01.14.00.00 After a 3 kilometre run, it’s time to strip off their clothes, step out of their shoes, and brace themselves for another gruelling day. Pouring buckets of cold water As schools go, this is about as tough as they can get. 14.25 Eighteen year old Baur once fled to his home in Siberia... thousands of kilometres from Moscow... to escape the hardship. But he’s come back for more. Baur Kasimbergebayev, Business Student Baur: Honestly speaking, after my mother’s home, it’s very hard here. But you get into this rhythm and you become addicted, you can’t live differently. 14.47 The boys are learning survival skills for one of the toughest environments in the world... Russian business. 15.03 PTC Campbell: In just 10 years Russia has gone form having almost no business at all to being a full-on capitalist society. And it’s been a painful learning experience. There’s been no clear rules, no business traditions, rampant corruption and an ever-present mafia. The idea of this school is to teach aspiring tycoons the right way to do things. And it doesn’t even cost them a cent. 15.10 Vladimir Dovgan... Russia’s best-known entrepreneur... is paying for their tuition. 15.43 At 33 years of age, he’s a multi-millionaire with his own TV shows and a business empire built on his name His school costs him more than $2 million a year to educate 105 students. But he insists business is about more than making money. Dovgan entering As Dovgan arrives, he’s met with a 100 strong recitation of the school motto. Knowledge, honour, victory After a long talk on business strategy, the boys have a chance to meet their hero. 16.16 Dovgan: You should chose your way in life. You are studying now, and you should listen to your heart. You should have a passion for something. 16.23 For Baur, the Moscow businessman is like a biblical prophet. 16.33 Baur Baur: When I met him in Moscow, I saw what kind of man he was. I saw that his thoughts are pure, he only thinks about the revival of Russia. This is a man with an immensely kind heart. He is in business, and if Russia has more business people like him, it will become the greatest power! Dovgan made his fortune filling the marketing void left by Communism. 17.08 He doesn’t actually produce anything. He takes generic Soviet produce and packages it with his Dovgan logo that he markets as a sign of quality. Dovgan’s formula for success... presented in a handy training video... is something he learnt by trial and error. 17.22 Dovgan: Some people never, ever, reach their goal, never His first business venture... franchising bakeries... left him bankrupt and his shareholders out of pocket. He hopes the tycoon school will make his students’ journey a little easier. 17.40 Dovgan Dovgan: Our idea is that talented kids can’t get education, because they don’t have money, so the corporation took a decision to give them achance to show they’re talented by supported them financially. We agreed that they will owe us nothing. Let them help someone too, when they grow up and become big bosses. Baur believes the course help him achieve his twin ambitions... first, to be a billionaire, and second, to be President of the former Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan. 18.10 Baur Baur: I decided to become president of Kazakhstan and not just a president, but the youngest president. I want to be fully prepared to get this job., And I didn’t think about business first, I thought I’d reach my goal by becoming a lawyer. But things have changed so much now, that I’ve decided to get this job through a business career. 18.20 Dovgan with bodyguards But rising to the top in Russia is still a dangerous business 18.52 Dovgan relies on 24 hour protection, never travelling the without bodyguards. Dovgan: I think that for most people doing business here is like doing it in, say, Germany or France. In the other hand, the crime rate is very is high indeed, and we have to spend lots of money on security to protect what we have achieved, there is no other way. Students in gym At 5pm, Baur’s school day is drawing to a close. 19.19 But there’s one last lesson... some old fashioned fighting.
