[00:46:54] – Narration Between Tahiti and Bora Bora, lies one of the most beautiful places in the Pacific ... the island of Huahine. Two years ago, American multi-millionaire, Tom Kurth, invested his entire fortune in turning a part of the island into a Robinson Crusoe style holiday resort for VIPs. [00:47:19] - ITW # 1: Peter Eberhardt - Director of Hana Iti This is part of the property, once owned by Julio Igelsias, bought by Tom Kurth, who built Hana Iti over 34 hectares. There are 24 suites altogether, some high up in the trees and others, which you will see in a moment. [00:47:41] [00:47:43] – Narration When Tom Kurth bought the island from famous singer, Julio Iglesias, in 1989, for just over $5 million, there was nothing here ... Except for Tom’s dream. Today, it is a popular haven for celebrities and billionaires who are ready to pay $1,200 a night to stay in its luxury, treetop suites. Kurth, wanted to share his love of the Polynesian landscape with the world. So he spent more than $23 million on building a place to discover all the pleasures and sensations that nature has to offer. Here you can enjoy exotic scents and flavours, sit and listen to birdsong, all while watching the stars. [00:48:43] – Narration This is the Hotel Hana iti ... where the fantasy of a young boy has come to life [00:48:45] - ITW # 2: Jean-Philippe and Laurence DARA - PARIS People who live luxuriously and people with high-pressure jobs often also have big responsibilities. They’ll think of this place as their private little paradise. [00:49:07] - ITW # 3: Tom Kurth - "ROBINSON CRUSOE BILLIONAIRE" "When I was a boy, I liked sleeping in my tree house and I think adults have the same right to fantasize and enjoy as they did when they were youngsters so…a lot of people have, have…liked staying in the tree houses.” [00:49:31] - Narration 24 suites of 120 square metres scattered through the forest perched 20 meters high among the treetops. The design is driven by nature, the trunks and branches create the structures by forming the supports and beams. The architectural result is quite surprising [00:50:13] – Narration The baths, taps, fixtures and sinks are made of porcelain or natural shell as well as large ergonomic rattan chairs. Each unit is unique and includes four rooms over three floors, a bedroom, a living room looking out onto the bay and an outdoor patio - with a Jacuzzi. [00:50:27] - ITW # 4: Jane WINSTON - Washington DC / on Honeymoon "I expect mosquitoes and actually after talking to you two gentlemen I expect lots of creatures all around and about…I think, I expect to take lots of pictures.” [00:50:45] – Narration Six years of work, miles of pipelines and cables pulled through the lush vegetation to equip every tree house with running water, electricity and a phone line. You will find rooms with suspended walkways made of branches and rope. The decor is all made of natural materials, precious woods from Africa, Indonesia, The Philippines or Mexico. Construction costs were nearly a million dollars for each suite. 'Robinson Crusoe in Luxury’ implies some concessions had to be made, however, those who frequent luxury hotels and have never slept under the stars will be somewhat surprised. Still, Baywatch star, Pamela Anderson couldn’t resist more than one night. 007 actor Pierce Brosnan, visited while researching the role of Robinson Crusoe and Diana Ross booked all 24 suites to celebrate her 50th anniversary as a recording artist, at a cost of $ 130,000. [00:51:37] - ITW # 5: Tom Kurth - "Billionaire philanthropist" "Well I have invested over 23 million dollars into Hana Iti and…but I guess you could say that I believe that being good to others is better than hoarding money and you go through life trying to make money…” [00:52:03] – Narration Maybe, but when these fantastic natural suites cost up to 1,400 dollars per night, the price is hardly a dream. [00:52:13] - ITW # 6: Jean-Philippe and Laurence DARA “t’s just a question of prioritizing your spending. It’ doesn’t really cost much more than some places in the South of France.” [00:52:22] - ITWN 7: Jane WINSTON "…We decided from very early on that what we were going to do is not think about money and just give our first born child to go ahead and have this paradise for our honeymoon. So it’s very very expensive and it’s a long trip but I think it’s worth it.” [00:52:39] [00:52:40] – Narration Tom, the billionaire married a local and now lives in a simple cottage near his hotel. But does loving nature mesh with his financial needs? [00:52:48] - ITW # 9: Tom Kurth - "green billionaire" "I guess it’s not important that they mesh perfectly….I think it’s more important to bring people back to nature….something as different as Hana Iti is…it takes time for people to get to know it. I may be the last idealist I suppose but…I’m happy" END – 00:53:22
