ALEXANDRA: There is Juliana.

STANLEY: Hello, hello ...

2:22

This is Juliana. Following the recent earthquake in Haiti, she is an orphan.

For three months she has been in hospital, awaiting further treatment.

Almost every day her cousin Stanley visits her.

2:34

Phone rings

STANLEY: You go to talk.

2:43

During the earthquake Juliana became trapped under the rubble with her mother.

For days they were stuck, without food or water.

2:57

When they were rescued, Juliana and her mother, Paula, became symbols of hope.

Their rescue was hailed as a miracle by the Dutch team that discovered them.

3:11

3:30

DUTCH REDDINGSWERKER: Beware. - Wait!

This is truly a miracle! To find both -the mother and the little one. It’s really great.

3:43

3:47

STANLEY:

The Dutch didn’t know us. They just came to help us.

And they did.

They just did.

3:54

But shortly after the rescue, the story took a dramatic turn.

In a Russian emergency hospital Paula and Juliana were found to have blood poisoning,

due to the weight of the rubble on their limbs.

Diseased parts were cut away from Juliana’s leg. Paula’s leg was amputated.

Yet Paula remained optimistic.

4:19

4:21

PAULA QUOTE:

I am sad for the many dead.

But I am blessed, because God has saved me.

4:27

The next day, however, her other leg was amputated.

Paula became scared.

She asked Stanley to call her only sister, in Canada, for help.

4:41

4:46

QUOTE STANLEY:

She literally said this:

'I have a bad feeling. "

"Please take care of my children."

4:51

Shortly after that phone call Paula died.

Juliana and her brother and sister are now orphans.

5:00

5:07

QUOTE STANLEY:

When I heard that Paula was dead,

I started crying like a girl.

Because she left behind three children,

who had nothing.

5:18

On the day of the funeral the Russians break up their camp and head home.

Stanley took Juliana under his wing.

They embarked on an unknown future. And so we took our leave in mid January.

5:44

Three months later, in mid-April, we returned to see how they were doing.

Stanley reports that Juliana was quickly re-hospitalised.

5:54

QUOTE STANLEY:

She's too young

to lose a leg.

5:59

After Stanley picked her up from the Russian emergency hospital, she developed a new infection.

By the time she returned to hospital, amputation of her leg seemed inevitable.

But Stanley protested, and so a Swiss doctor chose another emergency procedure.

Consequently, Juliana still has her leg. Yet a new operation in a specialized hospital is urgently

needed. Without surgery, Juliana will become permanently disabled.

And then there's the psychological trauma.

6:34

6:38

QUOTE STANLEY:

She cries in her sleep: "Mother, mother.

And when she wakes up, then she screams.

She asks only for her mother.

6:48

It was in this street three months ago that Dutch rescuers pulled Paula and Juliana from the

rubble.

Half of this neighbourhood died in the disaster.

Local residents in yellow shirts now earn $ 3 per day clearing the debris. It is just enough to buy

themselves some beer.

With many corpses still being found under the rubble, there is little place for sensitivity

here.

7:18

A few weeks after the earthquake Paula's sister, Alexandra, came over from Canada to care for

her orphaned nieces and nephew.

7:27

7:31

QUOTE STANLEY:

It was along here they pulled her out.

And there was Paula.

7:39

Alexandra has but one mission: to take the children as quickly as possible back to Canada.

So far she has had no success. She is becoming desperate.

7:54

7:57

8:01

8:05

8:08

8:13

QUOTE ALEXANDRA:

I came here and wanted to stay a week.

Now I have been here almost three months and I still have not achieved anything.

Tell me: What should I do?

What can I do with my nephews and nieces?

I run from here to there.

We do not have a house.

Haiti is dead. There is nothing more here.

8:19

8:22

8:30

SCENE STANLEY / ALEXANDRA

These are clothes for the children.

Here, the slippers of Paula.

Alexandra, I am saddened by this.

8:36

In a few days time the excavators will have cleared the entire district.

Alexandra and Stanley search for Paula’s belongings.

8:45

QUOTE / SCENE

Also from Paula.

8:57

9:02

9:05

9:10

QUOTE ALEXANDRA:

I would like to tell her I love her and I miss her so much.

I do not know how I can cope with the children.

She always knew sweet nothings to say to them.

We're all devastated.

I have no words.

9:21

Port au Prince is turned into a refugee camp. There is little sympathy for the traumatised.

(pause)

Blue Helmets do not dare to delve too deeply into the camps, afraid of kidnappings.

In the camp, abuse, theft, and exchanging sex for a little food is all too common.

9:49

9:55

9:58

QUOTE STANLEY:

Before the earthquake living in Haiti difficult. Really hard.

Very difficult.

And after the earthquake life is impossible.

10:04

10:13

10:23

Stanley still lives in the tent he occupied in January.

It's rainy season, and almost every night water comes pouring in.

QUOTE STANLEY

If we do not have blocks, the water is in our bed.

Stanley wants to get out of Haiti, and go along with Juliana and the others to

Canada.

He is trying to organise the necessary papers.

But what if the children can get away and he can’t?

10:38

10:41

10:45

10:51

QUOTE STANLEY

If I must choose between me and the kids ... Then of course I choose for the children.

Not that it's easy for me. Things are hard.

But for the kids I want the best. And I know this is the best for them.

10:58

For now the more immediate concern is for Juliana’s health.

After her last bout of surgery her dressings have not been changed regularly.

At night, Juliana's fever soars.

11:15

11:20

11:23

QUOTE STANLEY:

The doctor leaves this dirty wound.

Its infected..

And this side is open.

11:27

Stanley can wait no longer and takes Juliana to a U.S. medical post,

elsewhere on the site, where her dressings can be changed.

11:48

The day also consists of waiting for the weekly visit from the Haitian doctor.

But he never appears.

12:02

12:10

12:13

12:16

12:23

12:26

In the afternoon one of the American doctors appears.

She wants to see Juliana's medical record and

speaks with the nurse.

SCENE / QUOTE

I want to know why he is nothing

to Juliana's leg did.

When the doctor been here?

According to the nurse, the doctor has just been today.

QUOTE SCENE

So again: The doctor comes every day?

You say that today he has been, but I haven’t seen him.

12:31

12:51

Alexandra is stuck. She wants to take the children away from here. The

problem is that they do not have the correct papers, and in recent months

they have come nowhere near completion.

She decides to get a lawyer involved, to provide the missing documents.

**

Alexandra and Stanley pay the man a fortune. And yet he can do what normally

takes weeks through the courts.

Stanley looks on from a distance.

Tomorrow will show whether the lawyer was worth the money.

13:21

13:41

The next day the neighbourhood where Paula's house once was is

razed to the ground.

Nothing of their previous life remains here.

A mother now hopes to find the bodies of her two children. They have

been lying somewhere under the house for months. A corpse has been

found.

It is the task of surviving families to deal with the body.

14:04

In the afternoon the lawyer and the court officer take to the street.

They have brought something: the missing documents.

(pause)

It may be that Juliana and her brother and sister can escape Haiti.

Stanley is thrilled, even if the cost has been high.

14:33

There is more good news.

An American surgeon, who is in Haiti for a few days,

wants to look at Juliana's leg.

The man is at a hospital a half hour drive away.

For the first time in several months she is being seen by a specialist.

14:50

SCENE / QUOTES STANLEY / ARTS

Every night she suffers from fever.

- Is it dry or wet?

- Sometimes here it is still a bit wet.

- The surface of the skin is almost completely healed. But you do not know what is

is going on beneath the skin.

When there is an infectious then it must be treated with a combination of

antibiotics and surgery.

You can certainly save the leg. She’s not going to lose her leg.

The best thing for her is starting treatment as soon as you can.

STANLEY:

That is why we want her to go to Canada

- Treat her as soon as possible.

15:48

There is still hope for Juliana’s legs.

But they must go quickly to a specialist hospital.

Stanley and Alexandra are confident. They have every paper required to

present at the Canadian embassy.

16:12

But when they get there, it is different than they expected.

The embassy has been flooded with visa applications in recent months.

Alexandra and Stanley are stranded at the gate.

16:23

QUOTE STANLEY:

They said it is impossible to get a visa here.

We must first go to the Dominican Republic ...

... And then come back in May or June.

16:37

They don’t have the money to travel to the Dominican Republic.

16:55

In desperation they ask anyone they can if they will help them.

It is all in vain.

17:12

.

QUOTE ALEXANDRA:

The children are crying all the time and asking for their mother.

I don’t know what to say to them. I have no more strength.
