Japan Rescue

Transcript

00.08 – 00.21

Nine days have passed since the earthquake and mega tsunami completely destroyed this town of Tschinomaki in Northern Japan. The chances of finding any more survivors now borders on the miraculous.

00.22 – 00.36

But today a miracle took place. Police heard shouts coming from the roof of a collapsed three-storey building half a mile inland from the coast. Within minutes a helicopter was circling overhead and a rescue team were rushing to the scene.

00.38 – 00.44

Deep inside the rubble paramedics shouted back that an 80 year old grandmother was trapped in her kitchen.

00.46 – 00.51

It wasn’t long before the old woman was dragged out of the rubble and raced to the helicopter.

00.54 – 01.00

She was dehydrated and dazed but alive.

01.06 – 01.10

She was helped to sit up and was even able to mutter a few words.

01.14 – 01.21

Her rescuers told us that she’d survived for the nine days living off yoghurt and that her legs had been trapped in a crushed refrigerator.

01.28 – 01.43

This is truly an amazing sight, after nine days in the rubble, a woman has just been brought out her house that had completely collapsed on her. She’s in the helicopter and they’re going to the hospital. And there’s another body! Another person is coming out of the rubble now!
01.49 – 01.57

The second survivor turned out to be the old woman’s 16 year old grandson. He too was alive but in critical condition.

01.59 – 02.07

As Japan reels from multiple tragedies, this family’s story of hope is exactly what this nation needs.
