Mark,
you'd have to say that the response to the news here has been muted.
Certainly, no one is spilling onto the streets calling for revenge. That may
reflect the fact that bin Laden's influence here was on the wane. Some even
called him a relic of the past. His era here had ended, and hope now lies in
popular democracy. |

With
me here is Mohammed al-Beltagi from the Muslim
Brotherhood, a movement outlawed here for decades by former president Hosni
Mubarak. Now, it's a major political force. Dr. al-Beltagi, what's your reaction to the death of Osama bin
Laden? |
Dr. al-Beltagi: |
[foreign
language 00:00:39] Al-Qaeda, [foreign language 00:00:44] Al-Qaeda, [foreign
language 00:00:46] Israel. |
Speaker
1: |
I
note that the Muslim Brotherhood has condemned the killing as an
assassination. |
Dr. al-Beltagi: |
[foreign
language 00:00:55] Al-Qaeda, [foreign language 00:01:03], Osama bin-Laden
[foreign language 00:01:09]. |
Speaker
1: |
But
many disaffected Egyptians would have identified with Osama bin Laden's fight
against the U.S., wouldn't they? |
Dr. al-Beltagi: |
[foreign
language 00:01:30]. |
Speaker
1: |
I
noticed that the brotherhood has said that the U.S. needs to pull out of Iraq
and Afghanistan because they shouldn't be occupying those lands. Is that not
the view of militants? |
Dr. al-Beltagi: |
[foreign
language 00:02:41] Al-Qaeda [foreign language 00:03:02]. |
Speaker
1: |
We're
here overlooking Tahrir Square. Do you support the aspirations of the hundred of thousands of people who rallied here for
democracy? |
Dr. al-Beltagi: |
[foreign
langauge 00:03:19]. |
Speaker
1: |
If
you win half the seats of the upcoming election as has been predicted by
some, what kind of political system will you support? |
Dr. al-Beltagi: |
[foreign
language 00:04:02]. |
Speaker
1: |
Do
you think Sharia law has a place for democracy because there are fears that
you want to introduce Sharia law in Egypt? |
Dr. al-Beltagi: |
[foreign
language 00:04:31]. |
Speaker
1: |
So
do you reject Al-Qaeda or the Taliban's versions of Sharia law? |
Dr. al-Beltagi: |
[foreign
language 00:05:01] Iran, [foreign language 00:05:24], Afghanistan, [foreign
language 00:05:26]. |
Speaker
1: |
Dr. al-Beltagi, thank you for
your time. |
