INTRO

VOICE-OFF:

The Vatnajokull in Iceland.50 kilometres long: Europe's

second largest glacier. A month ago, the nine athletes

of the 400 metre Estafeta team began their 5-day expedition.

SUBTITLE: 5     TIMEIN: 00:01:19:00     TIMEOUT: 00:01:22:22

You're not allowed

to get ahead of the guide. Never.

VOICE-OFF: The aim of the journey: prepare the team

for the London Olympics next year.

SOMOP: Prends ça, donne-moi ça!

SUBTITLE: 7     TIMEIN: 00:01:30:11     TIMEOUT: 00:01:32:19

Take this. And give me that.

HOTEL

svo: Day 1

VOICE-OFF: Day 1 of the expedition in Reykjavik. The athletes prepare to leave. The twins, Jonathan and Kevin Borlée, the stars of the team, have their last

proper breakfast of the week.

 SUBTITLE: 11     TIMEIN: 00:01:56:12     TIMEOUT: 00:02:00:02

I have really no idea

what lies in front of us.

SUBTITLE: 12     TIMEIN: 00:02:00:06     TIMEOUT: 00:02:04:06

I've been for two hour walks,

but that's about it.

 SUBTITLE: 13     TIMEIN: 00:02:05:10     TIMEOUT: 00:02:08:11

We did team building sessions

beforehand,

SUBTITLE: 14     TIMEIN: 00:02:09:00     TIMEOUT: 00:02:12:12

but never in such temperatures,

far from anywhere.

 SUBTITLE: 15     TIMEIN: 00:02:12:16     TIMEOUT: 00:02:17:04

The two new guys must be wondering

what's going on.

SUBTITLE: 16     TIMEIN: 00:02:17:08     TIMEOUT: 00:02:21:17

They've only just heard

that we're leaving for Iceland,

SUBTITLE: 17     TIMEIN: 00:02:21:21     TIMEOUT: 00:02:26:05

to go walking in the cold.

At least we'll get to know each other.

SOMOP: Gaat die stokwissel goed? Die gaat goed. Gillet is weg!

(Are they changing sticks well? Yes, smoothly. Gillet fired off!)

VOICE-OFF: Paris, nine months ago. The Belgian team win bronze at the

European Athletics championships.

SOMOP: En waar komt Kevin Borlée? Wordt het brons? Brons opnieuw voor België!

 SUBTITLE: 20     TIMEIN: 00:02:36:21     TIMEOUT: 00:02:42:02

Where will Kevin Borlée finish?

Will it be bronze for Belgium again?

VOICE-OFF: Ambitions for the future are higher. There's even hope

for an Olympic medal, but then the team have to be stronger,

and push back their frontiers. What better place

than a glacier in Iceland?

 SUBTITLE: 25     TIMEIN: 00:02:57:09     TIMEOUT: 00:03:00:09

I'm not scared of the physical aspect,

SUBTITLE: 26     TIMEIN: 00:03:00:13     TIMEOUT: 00:03:03:06

I think an athlete should be up to it.

SUBTITLE: 27     TIMEIN: 00:03:05:22     TIMEOUT: 00:03:09:16

I usually sleep half-naked,

but I'll put on a warm coat...

 SUBTITLE: 28     TIMEIN: 00:03:09:20     TIMEOUT: 00:03:12:14

I can only sleep with my feet bare.

SUBTITLE: 29     TIMEIN: 00:03:12:18     TIMEOUT: 00:03:16:16

Tonight they'll be wrapped up.

I hope I can get to sleep.

DE HANGAR

VOICE-OFF: Sleep isn't the only problem.

SOMOP: Bienvenu!

VOICE-OFF: Each member of the expedition will

have to pull a sledge weighing 30 kg.

Alain Hubert, the leader,

lends a helping hand.

 SUBTITLE: 33     TIMEIN: 00:03:31:00     TIMEOUT: 00:03:35:10

We'll put the food for two people

for four days in this.

SVO: Alain Hubert, expeditionleader

 SUBTITLE: 34     TIMEIN: 00:03:35:18     TIMEOUT: 00:03:40:10

They'll drop us off in the snow later

and everything has to be ready.

SUBTITLE: 35     TIMEIN: 00:03:40:14     TIMEOUT: 00:03:42:14

It'll be snowing, it'll be windy...

SUBTITLE: 36     TIMEIN: 00:03:42:18     TIMEOUT: 00:03:46:18

Each of us has to know

how to manage their own equipment.

SUBTITLE: 37     TIMEIN: 00:03:47:09     TIMEOUT: 00:03:49:19

That's why we use the same material

SUBTITLE: 38     TIMEIN: 00:03:49:23     TIMEOUT: 00:03:52:02

that I use on my expeditions.

VOICE-OFF: Alain has already mounted

many expeditions. He crossed the Antarctic

and walked from Siberia to Greenland. But the Vatnajokull glacier

is new to him.

QUOTE:

 SUBTITLE: 42     TIMEIN: 00:04:04:14     TIMEOUT: 00:04:08:06

I've never done this one,

it will be an adventure.

SUBTITLE: 43     TIMEIN: 00:04:08:10     TIMEOUT: 00:04:11:10

It certainly beats

walking on the beach.

SUBTITLE: 44     TIMEIN: 00:04:11:17     TIMEOUT: 00:04:17:12

It won't be too cold. It won't drop

under minus fifteen at night.

SUBTITLE: 45     TIMEIN: 00:04:17:18     TIMEOUT: 00:04:19:05

And that's not cold?

SUBTITLE: 46     TIMEIN: 00:04:19:09     TIMEOUT: 00:04:22:03

Not for me, it isn't anyway.

ONDERWEG NAAR DE GLETJSER

VOICE-OFF: Only one man hopes

it will be bitingly cold. Jacques Borlée, Kevin and Jonathan's

father and the team's coach. He's convinced his athletes will come out of it feeling stronger.

 SUBTITLE: 50     TIMEIN: 00:04:40:04     TIMEOUT: 00:04:42:10

If you look at Alain Hubert...

SUBTITLE: 51     TIMEIN: 00:04:42:14     TIMEOUT: 00:04:46:17

He is so strong.

He's braved the cold so often.

SUBTITLE: 52     TIMEIN: 00:04:46:22     TIMEOUT: 00:04:49:20

Extreme cold makes you stronger.

SUBTITLE: 53     TIMEIN: 00:04:49:24     TIMEOUT: 00:04:55:12

I also believe that athletes don't push

themselves to the limit often enough.

VOICE-OFF: Jacques knows very well

what it means to go all the way. As an athlete he was known

for his iron will.

 SUBTITLE: 56     TIMEIN: 00:05:04:18     TIMEOUT: 00:05:09:10

Jacques Borlée once again proves

he is by far our best 200m runner.

VOICE-OFF: His legendary perseverance

won Jacques 14 Belgian titles,

and European silver in 1983.

 SUBTITLE: 59     TIMEIN: 00:05:16:24     TIMEOUT: 00:05:21:13

Whatever the weather or if it was

Christmas or New Year's day,

SUBTITLE: 60     TIMEIN: 00:05:21:17     TIMEOUT: 00:05:24:17

I always went training.

It's the way I am.

SUBTITLE: 61     TIMEIN: 00:05:25:05     TIMEOUT: 00:05:30:03

I want the guys to realize

that you can do great things,

SUBTITLE: 62     TIMEIN: 00:05:30:07     TIMEOUT: 00:05:32:22

but only if you push yourself

to the limit.

VOICE-OFF: The journey from Reykjavik to the

glacier takes the expedition 3 hours.

They intend to trek right across it. An 80 km journey through snow

and ice.

 SUBTITLE: 66     TIMEIN: 00:05:54:06     TIMEOUT: 00:05:55:19

It's very cold.

SUBTITLE: 67     TIMEIN: 00:05:57:07     TIMEOUT: 00:05:59:20

It doesn't really matter how I feel.

SUBTITLE: 68     TIMEIN: 00:05:59:24     TIMEOUT: 00:06:04:13

We've got to leave. I want to start

walking to get warm.

SOMOP:  Bon, pour mettre les skis! Prenez vos bâtons ici. On s'ammène devant ici. Voilà, c'est mis.

 SUBTITLE: 69     TIMEIN: 00:06:04:17     TIMEOUT: 00:06:06:08

You can put on your skis.

SUBTITLE: 70     TIMEIN: 00:06:07:06     TIMEOUT: 00:06:10:22

Take your sticks.

You put your foot in like this.

 SUBTITLE: 71     TIMEIN: 00:06:12:05     TIMEOUT: 00:06:16:13

We put our material onto the sledge

and then we left.

SUBTITLE: 72     TIMEIN: 00:06:17:01     TIMEOUT: 00:06:20:06

They said that the going

wouldn't be too hard.

SUBTITLE: 73     TIMEIN: 00:06:20:19     TIMEOUT: 00:06:23:06

We already had a great start.

SUBTITLE: 74     TIMEIN: 00:06:23:15     TIMEOUT: 00:06:28:20

We'd hardly been walking an hour

when we hit a snow storm.

SUBTITLE: 75     TIMEIN: 00:06:28:24     TIMEOUT: 00:06:31:02

We had no choice but to make camp.

SOMOP: One more, and then... On met le ski directement là-dessus? Oui! Attention les skis, oui...

VOICE-OFF: After just 1500m

the team meet their first challenge.

SUBTITLE: 77     TIMEIN: 00:06:35:10     TIMEOUT: 00:06:36:16

Watch the ski.

SUBTITLE: 78     TIMEIN: 00:06:38:03     TIMEOUT: 00:06:40:07

Do we put the skis on top?

 Pitching tents in a storm

can be very dangerous.

 SUBTITLE: 80     TIMEIN: 00:06:44:17     TIMEOUT: 00:06:50:02

It was no fun at all trying to pitch tents

in such weather.

SUBTITLE: 81     TIMEIN: 00:06:50:08     TIMEOUT: 00:06:52:12

It was very difficult.

SUBTITLE: 82     TIMEIN: 00:06:52:16     TIMEOUT: 00:06:54:20

It was quite an experience.

SOMOP:

Celle-là d'abord!

 SUBTITLE: 83     TIMEIN: 00:06:54:24     TIMEOUT: 00:06:56:24

Carry on. Let it go first.

Wait, wait, wait, wait. Stop! Wait!

DAG TWEE:

VAST IN EEN SNEEUWSTORM

VOICE-OFF: The next day all the tents are still standing. That night a half metre of snow

had fallen.

Svo: Day 2

SVO: Alain Hubert

 SUBTITLE: 86     TIMEIN: 00:07:25:10     TIMEOUT: 00:07:26:22

The sky is white.

SUBTITLE: 87     TIMEIN: 00:07:27:19     TIMEOUT: 00:07:31:19

The ground's covered in snow,

everything's white.

SUBTITLE: 88     TIMEIN: 00:07:32:14     TIMEOUT: 00:07:35:04

Nothing but white wherever you look.

SUBTITLE: 89     TIMEIN: 00:07:36:07     TIMEOUT: 00:07:39:20

You can't leave if you can't see

the crevices in the ice.

SUBTITLE: 90     TIMEIN: 00:07:39:24     TIMEOUT: 00:07:44:15

You don't see anything,

especially the one in the lead.

 SUBTITLE: 91     TIMEIN: 00:07:45:11     TIMEOUT: 00:07:49:18

Alain had said to us:

It shouldn't be too bad.

SUBTITLE: 92     TIMEIN: 00:07:49:22     TIMEOUT: 00:07:54:18

Four nights, we'll have fine weather.

It'll be cold but not too cold.

SUBTITLE: 93     TIMEIN: 00:07:55:03     TIMEOUT: 00:07:58:11

We already had our initiation

the first night.

 SUBTITLE: 94     TIMEIN: 00:07:58:15     TIMEOUT: 00:08:02:13

Eating is difficult.

Going to the toilet poses a problem.

SUBTITLE: 95     TIMEIN: 00:08:03:16     TIMEOUT: 00:08:07:18

I think this is what the coach

had hoped for.

SUBTITLE: 96     TIMEIN: 00:08:07:22     TIMEOUT: 00:08:09:12

He got his wish.

SOMOP:

J'ai super-bien dormi!! Hahaha!! J'ai super-bien dormi!

 SUBTITLE: 97     TIMEIN: 00:08:18:15     TIMEOUT: 00:08:20:09

So, here we are.

SUBTITLE: 98     TIMEIN: 00:08:20:13     TIMEOUT: 00:08:21:24

I thought of you.

SUBTITLE: 99     TIMEIN: 00:08:22:13     TIMEOUT: 00:08:26:15

I had a great night's sleep, I really did.

 SUBTITLE: 100     TIMEIN: 00:08:27:21     TIMEOUT: 00:08:33:02

This is a great way to create solidarity

within the group.

SUBTITLE: 101     TIMEIN: 00:08:33:12     TIMEOUT: 00:08:37:24

I'll show these images to them

just before the Olympic Games.

SUBTITLE: 102     TIMEIN: 00:08:38:03     TIMEOUT: 00:08:42:15

That'll make us a run a few tenths

faster to win our medal.

VOICE-OFF: The snow finally stops

in the afternoon. However, Alain decides not to carry

on any further.

SOMOP:

Donc on préfère rester.

-

 SUBTITLE: 105     TIMEIN: 00:08:52:00     TIMEOUT: 00:08:57:08

If we leave now, we'd only have to

make camp again in a couple of hours.

SUBTITLE: 106     TIMEIN: 00:08:57:12     TIMEOUT: 00:09:01:02

It wouldn't be worth it.

So, we'll stay here.

SUBTITLE: 107     TIMEIN: 00:09:01:06     TIMEOUT: 00:09:03:21

The weather will be better tomorrow.

SUBTITLE: 108     TIMEIN: 00:09:04:00     TIMEOUT: 00:09:06:10

We should cover a good distance.

SUBTITLE: 109     TIMEIN: 00:09:06:14     TIMEOUT: 00:09:08:12

Twenty kilometres?

- Yes.

SUBTITLE: 110     TIMEIN: 00:09:08:16     TIMEOUT: 00:09:14:07

I hope in eight hours we can pass

the summit of the glacier tomorrow.

 SUBTITLE: 111     TIMEIN: 00:09:17:17     TIMEOUT: 00:09:21:10

We've only done one and a half

kilometres in two days.

SUBTITLE: 112     TIMEIN: 00:09:21:14     TIMEOUT: 00:09:24:11

Actually, it's going to be hard going.

DAG DRIE:

HET ESTAFETTE-TEAM

svo: Day 3

VOICE-OFF: It's not just the waiting,

the cold is taking its toll.

SOMOP: Oh shit.

VOICE-OFF: In the morning the temperature

has dropped to minus 15° Celsius.

SVO:

 SUBTITLE: 115     TIMEIN: 00:09:51:15     TIMEOUT: 00:09:57:23

It's really weird being miles from

anywhere, sleeping in a fridge,

SUBTITLE: 116     TIMEIN: 00:09:59:11     TIMEOUT: 00:10:04:11

and having to do everything,

including eating, in a tent.

SOMOP:

-        Prends mon mâtelat!

-        Tu le roules? Ne le roules pas!

 SUBTITLE: 117     TIMEIN: 00:10:05:15     TIMEOUT: 00:10:06:24

Take my mat.

SUBTITLE: 118     TIMEIN: 00:10:07:09     TIMEOUT: 00:10:10:22

Did you roll it up? You shouldn't.

- Why not?

VOICE-OFF: Will Oyowe suffers the most

from the cold. He comes from Nigeria.

He's never seen snow before.

QUOTE:

-        I think it's good character building, it helps you mentally you know. I'm just not enjoying the snow and the cold. Everything else is cool, just the snow and the ice. And the wind. No. It's okay.

-        Africans don't like snow?

-        I think they do. Just this African doesn't like snow, though.

 SUBTITLE: 121     TIMEIN: 00:10:48:06     TIMEOUT: 00:10:51:23

Will's wondering what he's doing

here.

SUBTITLE: 122     TIMEIN: 00:10:53:21     TIMEOUT: 00:10:55:15

But he doesn't complain.

SUBTITLE: 123     TIMEIN: 00:10:56:05     TIMEOUT: 00:10:58:20

We'll see when this is all over,

SUBTITLE: 124     TIMEIN: 00:10:58:24     TIMEOUT: 00:11:01:10

but it's important for him.

SUBTITLE: 125     TIMEIN: 00:11:01:14     TIMEOUT: 00:11:04:23

He's typically African,

just takes things easy.

SUBTITLE: 126     TIMEIN: 00:11:05:02     TIMEOUT: 00:11:09:17

I want him to become more

disciplined. He has a lot of potential.

SUBTITLE: 127     TIMEIN: 00:11:09:21     TIMEOUT: 00:11:13:03

You get results giving your best,

day after day.

VOICE-OFF: And results is what this is all about. Only four of the nine athletes

will be running in the Olympic Games. More than half will drop out. Even for Nils Duerinck, it's going to be

a hard slog for him to be in the team.

 SUBTITLE: 132     TIMEIN: 00:11:30:10     TIMEOUT: 00:11:34:05

It's been going on for some time now

that each of us

SUBTITLE: 133     TIMEIN: 00:11:34:09     TIMEOUT: 00:11:37:08

has to run faster and faster

to be in the team.

SUBTITLE: 134     TIMEIN: 00:11:37:12     TIMEOUT: 00:11:42:11

Nine people whose goal is the

Olympics or European championships.

SUBTITLE: 135     TIMEIN: 00:11:42:15     TIMEOUT: 00:11:45:09

It strengthens the competition.

SUBTITLE: 136     TIMEIN: 00:11:45:13     TIMEOUT: 00:11:51:01

My only goal this season is to run

in the finals of the Olympics.

VOICE-OFF: At present, it's only Kevin

and Jonathan who are sure of a place.

They are still that little bit faster

than the others.

VOICE-OFF: Kevin Borlée komt op het einde. Het is Kevin Borlée die goud pakt! Kevin Borlée voor België!

 SUBTITLE: 139     TIMEIN: 00:12:00:09     TIMEOUT: 00:12:05:10

Kevin Borlée right up to the finish,

it's Kevin who'll take gold for Belgium.

VOICE-OFF: Kevin won gold at the European

championships in Barcelona.

Jonathan is beter in snelheid, Kevin is beter in uithouding.

 SUBTITLE: 141     TIMEIN: 00:12:10:02     TIMEOUT: 00:12:14:19

The Borlées have one another,

they urge each other on.

SUBTITLE: 142     TIMEIN: 00:12:14:23     TIMEOUT: 00:12:19:08

There's this competitive spirit,

even between the two of them.

SUBTITLE: 143     TIMEIN: 00:12:19:12     TIMEOUT: 00:12:23:18

It's great when we're training to have

someone who's better than another.

SUBTITLE: 144     TIMEIN: 00:12:23:22     TIMEOUT: 00:12:26:18

Jonathan's faster

and Kevin has more stamina.

SUBTITLE: 145     TIMEIN: 00:12:26:22     TIMEOUT: 00:12:30:09

They're constantly pushing each other

to the limit.

 SUBTITLE: 146     TIMEIN: 00:12:30:23     TIMEOUT: 00:12:35:23

We're not always on form together.

Whoever is, is out in front,

SUBTITLE: 147     TIMEIN: 00:12:36:03     TIMEOUT: 00:12:39:10

pushing the other to improve his time,

SUBTITLE: 148     TIMEIN: 00:12:39:14     TIMEOUT: 00:12:41:18

which is beneficial to both of us.

 SUBTITLE: 149     TIMEIN: 00:12:41:22     TIMEOUT: 00:12:45:02

Now Kevin's coming up,

he's looking good,

SUBTITLE: 150     TIMEIN: 00:12:45:06     TIMEOUT: 00:12:48:10

and Jonathan doesn't look like

he can stop him.

 SUBTITLE: 151     TIMEIN: 00:12:50:08     TIMEOUT: 00:12:53:10

My sons can really go through hell.

SUBTITLE: 152     TIMEIN: 00:12:53:14     TIMEOUT: 00:12:56:05

It's as if they never seem to feel pain.

SUBTITLE: 153     TIMEIN: 00:12:56:09     TIMEOUT: 00:13:00:08

It's hard to imagine

how far they can push themselves.

SUBTITLE: 154     TIMEIN: 00:13:00:12     TIMEOUT: 00:13:02:06

Without saying a word.

 SUBTITLE: 155     TIMEIN: 00:13:02:19     TIMEOUT: 00:13:06:11

They do things that we can't

comprehend.

SUBTITLE: 156     TIMEIN: 00:13:06:15     TIMEOUT: 00:13:09:12

We know how it feels

pushing yourself.

SUBTITLE: 157     TIMEIN: 00:13:09:16     TIMEOUT: 00:13:12:19

Yet these guys go one step further.

VOICE-OFF: Today is no exception

for Jonathan and Kevin. Without waiting for the guides,

they set the pace. Uphill, in the snow, with a strong head wind.

 SUBTITLE: 161     TIMEIN: 00:13:31:07     TIMEOUT: 00:13:33:16

It was like unleashing the dogs.

SUBTITLE: 162     TIMEIN: 00:13:34:07     TIMEOUT: 00:13:38:04

They started off

and never looked back,

SUBTITLE: 163     TIMEIN: 00:13:38:08     TIMEOUT: 00:13:43:07

yet there were others who weren't

ready and made slower time.

 SUBTITLE: 164     TIMEIN: 00:13:46:14     TIMEOUT: 00:13:48:11

It's the way they are.

SUBTITLE: 165     TIMEIN: 00:13:49:14     TIMEOUT: 00:13:53:09

They always wanted to excel,

to show what they can do.

SUBTITLE: 166     TIMEIN: 00:13:54:07     TIMEOUT: 00:13:58:03

Right away they took off

like runaway dogs.

SUBTITLE: 167     TIMEIN: 00:13:58:07     TIMEOUT: 00:14:02:01

That's how they are,

they thrive on competition.

SUBTITLE: 168     TIMEIN: 00:14:02:05     TIMEOUT: 00:14:05:17

Otherwise they'd never compete

in the 400 metres,

SUBTITLE: 169     TIMEIN: 00:14:05:21     TIMEOUT: 00:14:07:19

where competition is fierce.

 SUBTITLE: 170     TIMEIN: 00:14:07:23     TIMEOUT: 00:14:11:15

We've always had

this competitive spirit,

SUBTITLE: 171     TIMEIN: 00:14:11:19     TIMEOUT: 00:14:14:03

to give the maximum of ourselves.

SUBTITLE: 172     TIMEIN: 00:14:14:07     TIMEOUT: 00:14:19:09

However, it's easier to give

of my best in my own discipline.

SUBTITLE: 173     TIMEIN: 00:14:20:00     TIMEOUT: 00:14:23:13

All I want to do is reach the end

as quickly as possible.

VOICE-OFF: But that's not to Alain Hubert's liking.

It's only after a two hour pursuit

that the group is back together again.

 SUBTITLE: 176     TIMEIN: 00:14:32:12     TIMEOUT: 00:14:36:10

You're not allowed

to get ahead of the guide. Never.

SUBTITLE: 177     TIMEIN: 00:14:36:14     TIMEOUT: 00:14:41:10

We're on a glacier. You have no idea

where crevices might be.

SUBTITLE: 178     TIMEIN: 00:14:41:14     TIMEOUT: 00:14:46:07

I don't want to see anyone in front

except one of us three.

SUBTITLE: 179     TIMEIN: 00:14:46:11     TIMEOUT: 00:14:51:15

Conditions can change quickly.

Sometimes we couldn't even see you.

SUBTITLE: 180     TIMEIN: 00:14:51:19     TIMEOUT: 00:14:55:10

After five minutes your tracks

are wiped out.

SUBTITLE: 181     TIMEIN: 00:14:55:14     TIMEOUT: 00:14:59:11

But if you get lost, you have to return

on your tracks.

SUBTITLE: 182     TIMEIN: 00:14:59:15     TIMEOUT: 00:15:02:21

If you can't find your tracks anymore...

SUBTITLE: 183     TIMEIN: 00:15:03:06     TIMEOUT: 00:15:06:05

There's no way we can find you.

VOICE-OFF: However, the expedition is far behind

its schedule.

So, Alain decides to continue walking

much longer that day.

SOMOP:

 SUBTITLE: 186     TIMEIN: 00:15:20:05     TIMEOUT: 00:15:22:22

Still 13 kilometres to the top.

- How many?

SUBTITLE: 187     TIMEIN: 00:15:23:02     TIMEOUT: 00:15:24:13

Thirteen.

- What?

SUBTITLE: 188     TIMEIN: 00:15:25:14     TIMEOUT: 00:15:28:20

He said that the beginning

was the hardest.

Gewoon echt blijven doorduwen.

 SUBTITLE: 189     TIMEIN: 00:15:31:01     TIMEOUT: 00:15:33:23

I've been walking on automatic pilot.

SUBTITLE: 190     TIMEIN: 00:15:34:02     TIMEOUT: 00:15:36:07

I didn't think, I just walked.

SUBTITLE: 191     TIMEIN: 00:15:36:11     TIMEOUT: 00:15:40:14

You're tired, your strength's going,

you just push on.

 SUBTITLE: 192     TIMEIN: 00:15:40:19     TIMEOUT: 00:15:45:12

It was hard. I tried not to look at

the sledge in front of me.

SUBTITLE: 193     TIMEIN: 00:15:45:16     TIMEOUT: 00:15:49:07

I'd hoped that Alain would stop.

It was pretty hard.

VOICE-OFF: After 10 hours hiking Alain finally

decides to pitch camp.

There's a huge sense of relief

among them.

 SUBTITLE: 196     TIMEIN: 00:15:59:08     TIMEOUT: 00:16:02:10

We're used to training hard,

SUBTITLE: 197     TIMEIN: 00:16:02:14     TIMEOUT: 00:16:06:22

but that's on short distances

and never for long.

SUBTITLE: 198     TIMEIN: 00:16:07:01     TIMEOUT: 00:16:09:09

Up here we have to pull a sledge.

SUBTITLE: 199     TIMEIN: 00:16:09:22     TIMEOUT: 00:16:12:23

You're tired, yet you don't seem

to make any progress.

SUBTITLE: 200     TIMEIN: 00:16:14:09     TIMEOUT: 00:16:15:09

Is it tight?

SOMOP:

T'as accroché?

QUOTE: Training in the rain in Belgium, that's what I miss. Not snowing in the middle of the North Pole or Iceland or I don't know.

DAG VIER:

ZON EN STORM

svo: Day 4

VOICE-OFF: Day 4 of the expedition dawns under

a beautiful sky.

QUOTE: Et quand on voit la lumière ici: it's a paradise!!!

 SUBTITLE: 202     TIMEIN: 00:16:50:04     TIMEOUT: 00:16:54:01

When you see the light

you think you're in paradise.

VOICE-OFF: It's also warmer today

and the wind has died down.

There's a great atmosphere

in the camp.

 SUBTITLE: 205     TIMEIN: 00:17:02:09     TIMEOUT: 00:17:03:19

Everything's fine.

SUBTITLE: 206     TIMEIN: 00:17:03:23     TIMEOUT: 00:17:07:06

No one's suffering

from a depression yet.

SUBTITLE: 207     TIMEIN: 00:17:07:10     TIMEOUT: 00:17:10:06

Everyone's got the right attitude.

SUBTITLE: 208     TIMEIN: 00:17:10:10     TIMEOUT: 00:17:15:13

They have to learn to have the right

attitude to overcome the obstacles.

SUBTITLE: 209     TIMEIN: 00:17:15:17     TIMEOUT: 00:17:18:02

This trip will make them into men.

VOICE-OFF: Pushing back frontiers, doing your

utmost, is a mantra for Jacques.

He demands absolute discipline from his seven children.

For Jonathan, it's not always that easy.

 SUBTITLE: 214     TIMEIN: 00:17:35:18     TIMEOUT: 00:17:39:12

Jonathan is more relaxed in the way

he does things,

SUBTITLE: 215     TIMEIN: 00:17:40:05     TIMEOUT: 00:17:43:01

he's more of a carpe diem type.

SUBTITLE: 216     TIMEIN: 00:17:43:13     TIMEOUT: 00:17:47:22

He takes each day as it comes

and sees where it will lead him.

 SUBTITLE: 217     TIMEIN: 00:17:48:01     TIMEOUT: 00:17:51:22

My father always says

I have a couldn't care less attitude.

SUBTITLE: 218     TIMEIN: 00:17:52:01     TIMEOUT: 00:17:53:21

I don't really like that.

SUBTITLE: 219     TIMEIN: 00:17:54:00     TIMEOUT: 00:17:56:13

Kevin is a lot more disciplined.

SUBTITLE: 220     TIMEIN: 00:17:56:17     TIMEOUT: 00:18:00:09

He never deviates from his principles.

SUBTITLE: 221     TIMEIN: 00:18:00:16     TIMEOUT: 00:18:03:00

That's his strong point.

SUBTITLE: 222     TIMEIN: 00:18:03:05     TIMEOUT: 00:18:07:00

He can really work towards

an objective.

 SUBTITLE: 223     TIMEIN: 00:18:08:07     TIMEOUT: 00:18:11:21

They might be Leos

but they're very sociable.

SUBTITLE: 224     TIMEIN: 00:18:13:16     TIMEOUT: 00:18:20:07

If you're at the very top of your sport,

you can easily become a bad person.

SUBTITLE: 225     TIMEIN: 00:18:21:05     TIMEOUT: 00:18:27:02

I think its exceptional

that they don't behave as champions.

SUBTITLE: 226     TIMEIN: 00:18:27:06     TIMEOUT: 00:18:29:15

They're still very unassuming.

SUBTITLE: 227     TIMEIN: 00:18:29:19     TIMEOUT: 00:18:33:08

I'm very proud to see how they still

SUBTITLE: 228     TIMEIN: 00:18:34:01     TIMEOUT: 00:18:37:10

remain normal in their daily lives.

VOICE-OFF: After a four-hour trek, the athletes

reach the highest point of the glacier.

SOMOP:

-        Kevin. Non c'est Jonathan. C'est Kevin?

-        Comme tu veux.

-        Allez, hop, on sourit! 1-2-3!

-        Come on guys, comme on allez allez!

 SUBTITLE: 230     TIMEIN: 00:18:45:06     TIMEOUT: 00:18:49:03

Kevin. No, it's Jonathan. Or Kevin?

- It's up to you.

SUBTITLE: 231     TIMEIN: 00:18:50:24     TIMEOUT: 00:18:54:06

Okay, a big smile.

One, two, three.

VOICE-OFF: However, the bad weather has put

them far behind their schedule.

So Alain decides to increase the pace.

 SUBTITLE: 234     TIMEIN: 00:19:08:24     TIMEOUT: 00:19:14:00

You can see the horizon, yet your eyes

are always fixed to the ground.

SUBTITLE: 235     TIMEIN: 00:19:14:04     TIMEOUT: 00:19:19:03

And after a few minutes hard slog,

the horizon is just as far away.

SUBTITLE: 236     TIMEIN: 00:19:19:07     TIMEOUT: 00:19:25:18

Until we slowly started descending,

and then Alain really upped the pace,

SUBTITLE: 237     TIMEIN: 00:19:25:22     TIMEOUT: 00:19:29:08

and it felt like the descent

was harder than the climb.

QUOTE: Mentally you want to go, you wanna go further. But your body says no.

VOICE-OFF: Will really finds the going hard.

He has open blisters

and the start of an infection.

SOMOP: Put them all the way up, so they slide down. If they make wrinkles, it's gonna kill your foot.

 SUBTITLE: 240     TIMEIN: 00:19:59:03     TIMEOUT: 00:20:00:09

That's life.

SUBTITLE: 241     TIMEIN: 00:20:00:24     TIMEOUT: 00:20:03:06

Everyone's feet hurt.

SUBTITLE: 242     TIMEIN: 00:20:05:06     TIMEOUT: 00:20:09:00

We'll carry his material.

We've got another hour to go.

SUBTITLE: 243     TIMEIN: 00:20:09:04     TIMEOUT: 00:20:12:00

We'll set up camp

and tonight there's no wind.

SUBTITLE: 244     TIMEIN: 00:20:12:04     TIMEOUT: 00:20:14:22

It'll be much nicer

than the last two days.

SUBTITLE: 245     TIMEIN: 00:20:15:01     TIMEOUT: 00:20:17:20

The first nights

were a real baptism of fire.

SUBTITLE: 246     TIMEIN: 00:20:17:24     TIMEOUT: 00:20:22:17

I never thought their baptism

would be like that.

SUBTITLE: 247     TIMEIN: 00:20:23:07     TIMEOUT: 00:20:25:15

It was really bad I can tell you.

VOICE-OFF: However, he doesn't know that

the real baptism of fire is yet to come.

 SUBTITLE: 249     TIMEIN: 00:20:34:00     TIMEOUT: 00:20:37:10

Everyone's thinking

there's just an hour to go

SUBTITLE: 250     TIMEIN: 00:20:37:14     TIMEOUT: 00:20:42:20

before they pitch camp.

And then the wind rises.

SUBTITLE: 251     TIMEIN: 00:20:43:01     TIMEOUT: 00:20:46:07

In just five minutes it really started

blowing.

SUBTITLE: 252     TIMEIN: 00:20:48:01     TIMEOUT: 00:20:52:12

It was just as if every devil

had been let loose on us.

SUBTITLE: 253     TIMEIN: 00:20:52:16     TIMEOUT: 00:20:56:02

We wanted to carry on,

but Alain stopped us.

 SUBTITLE: 254     TIMEIN: 00:20:56:06     TIMEOUT: 00:20:59:17

It must have been minus 26,

minus 30 degrees.

SUBTITLE: 255     TIMEIN: 00:21:00:13     TIMEOUT: 00:21:03:17

It was really extremely cold.

SUBTITLE: 256     TIMEIN: 00:21:04:04     TIMEOUT: 00:21:06:17

Take this and give me that.

SUBTITLE: 257     TIMEIN: 00:21:06:21     TIMEOUT: 00:21:09:22

Zero visibility and we had to put up

the tents.

SUBTITLE: 258     TIMEIN: 00:21:10:01     TIMEOUT: 00:21:11:15

Those are for the skis.

 SUBTITLE: 259     TIMEIN: 00:21:16:00     TIMEOUT: 00:21:20:16

The goggles started to freeze up

and you couldn't see through them.

SUBTITLE: 260     TIMEIN: 00:21:20:20     TIMEOUT: 00:21:26:24

When you took them off, it was so

cold the tears froze on your eyelashes.

VOICE-OFF: Will's fingertips are also frozen.

He'd poured hot water over his gloves

and now his gloves are frozen.

SOMOP:

 - It's my fingers. What's going on? They just hurt!

 - It's okay. Calm down. It's no problem. Mets un paire de gants, hein.

 SUBTITLE: 263     TIMEIN: 00:21:47:03     TIMEOUT: 00:21:50:20

These are your gloves.

We've got some spare pairs.

 SUBTITLE: 264     TIMEIN: 00:21:50:24     TIMEOUT: 00:21:52:15

He has cold hands.

SUBTITLE: 265     TIMEIN: 00:21:53:23     TIMEOUT: 00:21:58:20

It's because the wind

suddenly sprung up. The fatigue...

SUBTITLE: 266     TIMEIN: 00:21:58:24     TIMEOUT: 00:22:00:15

A bit of everything.

DAG VIJF:

DE LAATSTE KILOMETERS

svo: Day 5

VOICE-OFF: The storm continued throughout

the night. The wind only dies down at daybreak.

 SUBTITLE: 269     TIMEIN: 00:22:34:11     TIMEOUT: 00:22:38:17

The solidarity among the athletes

yesterday was incredible.

SUBTITLE: 270     TIMEIN: 00:22:38:21     TIMEOUT: 00:22:41:14

You didn't know who was putting up

the tent,

SUBTITLE: 271     TIMEIN: 00:22:41:18     TIMEOUT: 00:22:46:23

everyone was helping everyone else

and doing their utmost.

SUBTITLE: 272     TIMEIN: 00:22:47:02     TIMEOUT: 00:22:51:09

Solidarity is vital,

it's what we're looking for.

SOMOP:

- Tu aimes ça, hein?

- Qu'est-ce que tu penses? C'est un bon stage, hein.

- Oui c'est un bon stage.

...

 SUBTITLE: 273     TIMEIN: 00:22:53:09     TIMEOUT: 00:22:55:01

That's fun, isn't it?

SUBTITLE: 274     TIMEIN: 00:22:59:02     TIMEOUT: 00:23:00:13

What do you think of it?

SUBTITLE: 275     TIMEIN: 00:23:01:16     TIMEOUT: 00:23:04:19

A good training session?

- Yes, it's good.

SUBTITLE: 276     TIMEIN: 00:23:04:23     TIMEOUT: 00:23:07:10

But it's so cold.

- Are you cold?

SUBTITLE: 277     TIMEIN: 00:23:07:14     TIMEOUT: 00:23:10:18

Yes, I'm cold.

- But it's fun here, isn't it?

SUBTITLE: 278     TIMEIN: 00:23:10:22     TIMEOUT: 00:23:14:00

Finish the day off with a 400 metres.

SUBTITLE: 279     TIMEIN: 00:23:14:21     TIMEOUT: 00:23:17:18

I'm going to run 400 metres

in my tent.

SUBTITLE: 280     TIMEIN: 00:23:17:22     TIMEOUT: 00:23:20:03

Carry on as you're doing.

SUBTITLE: 281     TIMEIN: 00:23:22:10     TIMEOUT: 00:23:24:21

Come on man, get digging.

VOICE-OFF: Will has reached the end of his tether

mentally. Action has to be taken.

Alain decides to take a shorter route. He wants to arrive before dark.

 SUBTITLE: 285     TIMEIN: 00:23:44:21     TIMEOUT: 00:23:49:18

It was decided to take a shorter route

on the last day.

SUBTITLE: 286     TIMEIN: 00:23:49:22     TIMEOUT: 00:23:55:19

They said we had a 5 kilometre climb

then downhill all the way.

 SUBTITLE: 287     TIMEIN: 00:23:56:19     TIMEOUT: 00:23:58:23

Once we left we got down to it.

SUBTITLE: 288     TIMEIN: 00:23:59:02     TIMEOUT: 00:24:01:20

We knew that it was going

to be a long day.

SUBTITLE: 289     TIMEIN: 00:24:01:24     TIMEOUT: 00:24:06:13

The snow stuck to the skis.

It was very difficult going.

 SUBTITLE: 290     TIMEIN: 00:24:11:12     TIMEOUT: 00:24:15:05

There was so much snow

stuck to the bottom of my skis.

SUBTITLE: 291     TIMEIN: 00:24:15:09     TIMEOUT: 00:24:18:12

The sledges were three times

as heavy.

VOICE-OFF:

Will is hardly able to pull his own sledge. But solidarity reigns and

his team-mates come to the rescue.

 SUBTITLE: 294     TIMEIN: 00:24:35:05     TIMEOUT: 00:24:40:15

We had to work together

so we shared pulling the sledges,

SUBTITLE: 295     TIMEIN: 00:24:40:19     TIMEOUT: 00:24:44:23

to make some sort of progress

while trying to stay upright.

SOMOP:

 SUBTITLE: 296     TIMEIN: 00:24:45:02     TIMEOUT: 00:24:48:00

They're heavy.

- It's more difficult.

SUBTITLE: 297     TIMEIN: 00:24:48:04     TIMEOUT: 00:24:51:00

We could attach one sledge

to another.

VOICE-OFF: As evening falls the end point

still isn't in sight.

The athletes fear they'll have to camp

another night on the glacier.

 SUBTITLE: 300     TIMEIN: 00:25:01:10     TIMEOUT: 00:25:05:10

I thought: I really don't want to put

that tent up again.

SUBTITLE: 301     TIMEIN: 00:25:05:14     TIMEOUT: 00:25:07:04

I want to go home.

SUBTITLE: 302     TIMEIN: 00:25:07:10     TIMEOUT: 00:25:09:07

We weren't making any progress.

SUBTITLE: 303     TIMEIN: 00:25:09:11     TIMEOUT: 00:25:12:00

That's when we said:

Come on, we've got to move.

 SUBTITLE: 304     TIMEIN: 00:25:15:22     TIMEOUT: 00:25:19:13

When we arrived below that evening...

It was fantastic.

SUBTITLE: 305     TIMEIN: 00:25:19:17     TIMEOUT: 00:25:24:05

We had agreed that they would come

and fetch us with the tractor.

SUBTITLE: 306     TIMEIN: 00:25:24:09     TIMEOUT: 00:25:28:19

We saw their lights just as night fell,

it was a wonderful sight.

 SUBTITLE: 307     TIMEIN: 00:25:38:24     TIMEOUT: 00:25:42:01

We arrived,

and felt that moment of release.

SUBTITLE: 308     TIMEIN: 00:25:42:05     TIMEOUT: 00:25:45:10

We saw that we all looked like

drowned rats,

SUBTITLE: 309     TIMEIN: 00:25:45:14     TIMEOUT: 00:25:49:18

soaked to the skin and worn out,

but it was such a relief.

QUOTE: Het is genoeg geweest...

 SUBTITLE: 310     TIMEIN: 00:25:51:08     TIMEOUT: 00:25:52:23

That was enough for me.

  SUBTITLE: 311     TIMEIN: 00:25:55:21     TIMEOUT: 00:26:00:13

An incredible experience.

We can learn a lot from it.

SUBTITLE: 312     TIMEIN: 00:26:00:17     TIMEOUT: 00:26:04:09

We're going to analyse it

and make improvements.

SUBTITLE: 313     TIMEIN: 00:26:04:21     TIMEOUT: 00:26:08:16

We pushed ourselves to our limits.

That was the idea.

SOMOP:

- He, wat denkt u op mijn idee? Qu'est-ce que tu en penses?

- Je dirai ça l'année prochaine.

 SUBTITLE: 314     TIMEIN: 00:26:10:03     TIMEOUT: 00:26:12:14

What did you think of it?

SUBTITLE: 315     TIMEIN: 00:26:16:17     TIMEOUT: 00:26:18:17

I'll tell you that next year.

SOMOP:

 SUBTITLE: 316     TIMEIN: 00:26:19:14     TIMEOUT: 00:26:23:01

You did great, I'll take you on,

no problem at all.

SUBTITLE: 317     TIMEIN: 00:26:23:05     TIMEOUT: 00:26:25:02

We'll have to think about that.

QUOTE: Je pense qu'ils vont pouvoir dire: “We've done it! J'ai fait beaucoup plus que je n'avais imaginé.” Et finalement c'est un peu ça ce qu'on cherchait avec le groupe.

 SUBTITLE: 318     TIMEIN: 00:26:25:24     TIMEOUT: 00:26:29:03

I think each one can say:

I've done it.

SUBTITLE: 319     TIMEIN: 00:26:29:07     TIMEOUT: 00:26:31:21

I went further

than I thought was possible.

SUBTITLE: 320     TIMEIN: 00:26:32:00     TIMEOUT: 00:26:34:20

I didn't know things like that existed.

SUBTITLE: 321     TIMEIN: 00:26:34:24     TIMEOUT: 00:26:37:12

That's what we wanted to achieve.

THE BLUE LAGOON

svo: Day 6

VOICE-OFF: After the journey, there's time to relax

in a spa outside Reykjavik.

Will isn't there. He has a serious foot infection.

Yet the team appears mentally

ready for the Olympic Games.

On a énormément appris.

 SUBTITLE: 325     TIMEIN: 00:26:56:16     TIMEOUT: 00:26:59:16

A gold medal is part of a bigger thing.

SUBTITLE: 326     TIMEIN: 00:26:59:20     TIMEOUT: 00:27:02:22

It was a good experience.

SUBTITLE: 327     TIMEIN: 00:27:03:01     TIMEOUT: 00:27:06:08

We learned a lot about ourselves

and the team.

SUBTITLE: 328     TIMEIN: 00:27:06:12     TIMEOUT: 00:27:08:03

It was very hard mentally.

 SUBTITLE: 329     TIMEIN: 00:27:10:16     TIMEOUT: 00:27:16:06

We've already forgotten about the

hardships of the snow and the tent.

SUBTITLE: 330     TIMEIN: 00:27:16:10     TIMEOUT: 00:27:20:11

Thanks to a bit of hot water.

- A hot bath works wonders.
