Now it's often called the rainbow nation. South Africa's transition from apartheid to democracy is frequently held up as a global success story but 20 years on the dream of racial harmony is still a long way off.

The filmmaker Tarryn Crossman travelled to rural South Africa to meet the commando court and the extreme right wing group of Afrikaaners who believe in a war between the races is imminent. Mostly likely goes the widely held belief sparked by the death of Nelson Mandela itself.

They've now begun training thousands of youngsters to take up their cause of a separate white state.

It should be said that Jackie Longs report does include strong racist language and ideology that many viewers will find deeply offensive and distressing.

Voice Over (V/)): In the middle of a field north west of Johannesburg a group of Afrikaaner boys has arrived for a different kind of boot camp.

4

01:11

Sparky

In the Bible it says, black people must live with black people and white people must live with white people. You cannot mix nations. I don't have any black friends. If they come to my side and ask to speak to me, I will say no. Or I will turn my back on them and walk away.

5

01:31

V/O: Deon Barnard also known, as Sparky is 15. This is his first experience at a commando camp.

6

01:38

Sparky

It's more about self-defence. If they say the black people are attacking white people. The AWB will come in and they will say: "You have to leave or we will shoot you."

7

01:52

V/O: Here are Deon's mum and dad.

8

01:55

Sparky's Dad

Sparky's Mum

The AWB stands for The Afrikaner Resistance Movement.

And here, as you can see, the three 7s are not really like Hitler's Swastika as people say. They're the 777s that oppose the 666 of the Anti-Christ in the Bible, the beast. So the three 7s is the perfect number.

9

02:19

Sperky's Dad

Of our God and His glory. God, o people and Fatherland. That's what it stands for. It's not racist nor is it about racism. It's about who you are, what you are and what you stand for.

10

02:36

Sparky

These are certificates from when we were on camps. This is my mum. From when she was trained on a farm. This is our leader, Steyn van Ronge. He's our new AWB leader. Here's our old AWB leader, Eugene Terreblanche.

11

02:56

Family praying together at dinner table

V/O: They are a deeply religious family; prayers are said before every meal.

12

03:03

Sparky's Mum

We don't have any friends or many material possessions. Too many friends and possessions bring problems. We don't do that. Our family isn't on BBM or Facebook or anything of that sort. We're not looking for sinful things: those are sinful.

13

03:18

Sparky

What are we all going to do on the camp?

Shooting training that kind of thing?

14

03:23

Sparky's Dad

It's an endurance camp.

15

03:28

Sparky's Mum

You mustn't make me come and fetch you if you can't handle it. You have to finish it. Once you start something you have to see it through.

16

03:35

Sparky may be feeling nervous about what lies ahead, but he's also excited. Into his bag go the essentials, not forgetting a large hunting knife, and just in case a Taser.

17

03:49

Boys marching

Left. Left. Right. Left (marching song)

18

03:56

V/O: This is Kommando core a place where the hunger games meet the Hitler youth.

19

04:02

Army commander instructing the boys

Squad! Halt! Stop! One! Two!

Hey!

20

04:09

V/O: The ringmaster is Retired Colonel Franz Jooste a veteran of South Africa's apartheid army days.

21

04:16

Colonel Franz Jooste

Squad! Attention!

South Africa is bleeding, and this is why we have to train our people to be prepared.

22

04:26

Boys running in a field going through training

Music

23

04:30

V/O: Retired Colonel Jooste says they have trained at least 2000 young boys over the past two years. The camps take place four times a year during the school holidays.

Most of the days are spent pushing their bodies to the limit. But at night it's about twisting their minds with a shocking series of racist lectures.

24

04:54

Colonel Franz Jooste

There's a conflict between white people and black people in this country. We must accept this. We look different. We don't look the same as each other. They have thick lips. Their lips are likely to curl upwards. Okay? We have thin lips. The negroes ears on the inside are totally different to ours, it's much more sensitive. That's why us Afrikaners know to hit them on the ears and they'll fall to the ground. Because their ears are made differently.

25

05:24

V/O: There's no discussion, no descent, Jooste continues. His texts are straight out of the apartheid era. First the 1960s American segregationist Carlton Putnum.

26

05:38

Colonel Franz Jooste

"...clearly indicated that the negroes inferiority to the white man, average against average, in many way. But in no way more significantly than in the size and the weight of the brain. Especially in the measurements of the brains frontal cortex."

Now we ask ourselves, is there a difference in intelligence levels between a Negro and a Caucasian?

27

06:00

Boys training at night

V/O: Again and again he invokes the bogus theories of colonial racism.

28

06:05

Colonel Franz Jooste

"One must look at the negro not as one's equal, but as a child."

A black man has the intelligence level of a 14year old white boy

29

06:16

Boys sleeping

V/O: Lecture is over, it's time for bed. What dreams have now been implanted in their young minds. The vision is an end to Mandela's Rainbow Nation. The camp to plant the seeds of old hatreds in a new generation. Those who agree with Jooste are still a tiny minority of Afrikaners, among them Sparky's parents Deon and Alette.

30

06:44

Sparky's Mum

Deon doesn't play TV games and things like that. We tell him he must do other things instead, like Deon can shoot very well. More things...

31

06:50

Sparky's Dad

More practical things. More practical things which develop him. Otherwise he only develops his head. And he'll walk around like a kid with a swollen head.

32

Sparky

Background noise

The truth is that there will be a war in this country. So I'm preparing myself for a war that's coming.

33

07:08

Colonel Franz Jooste speaking to the boys

-Number one, what did you learn today?

-How to take a gun from someone's hands. Like from someone who is attacking you.

-Do you think you would be able to do it in the real world?

-Yes

34

07:20

Colonel Franz Jooste

We've got this millions and millions of blacks around you, smothering you and killing you. So you have to implement certain systems to survive. And that's why we say the only system we can go now for is not apartheid that's second prize. First prize is freedom. We want to be free.

35

07:42

Colonel Franz Jooste and the boys

Singing - De La Rey

36

07:58

V/O: They sing Afrikaans anthems such as the recent folk hit in tribute to De La Rey, the famous general from the Boer war. Then there's another pep talk.

37

08:09

Colonel Franz Jooste talking to the boys.

We have the ability. We have the men. We just need to plant the will in you. Because you have been brainwashed by old Mandela and all that stuff. Be proud of your people. Be proud of your race. Be proud of your faith. Be proud of your culture.

38

08:30

Sparky

Colonel Jooste is a very clever man. I didn't know he was that clever. He's terribly smart.

39

08:37

Colonel Franz Jooste

They want you to believe that you are part of the Rainbow Nation. So they give you a flag that means different things. And they give you a national anthem where you sing a little bit of Afrikaans, Xhosa and English. A mixture of things How can we be proud of such a thing?

40

08:56

Boy from camp

He told us to choose between the new flag or the orange, white and blue. I think I will choose the orange, white and blue. It's much prettier, and it is our proud Afrikaner blood.

41

09:12

Sparky

I've made friends. I like it here. All your friends are around you. They tell you stories about their dad's in the army and when we do that we think about our parents. And then I think wow! I could be just like my dad one day.

42

09:30

Sparky's Dad

We are safe with you, Lord. Father we ask You stay with us. To be with our Afrikaner leaders. Be with us. In our decisions and thoughts. We ask for all of this with Your blessing. Amen.

43

09:48

Boys in training camp

-I. Can't. Here. You!

-Yes, Sergeant!

Hey Sparky. What the f**k are you doing? The leopard crawl? Or playing in the mud?

I want to see your d**k dragging in the dirt!

Not just your arms! Use your legs as well!

45

10:09

Sparky going through drills as the sergeant yells instructions

I can. I will. I want to.

-Go help your friends

I can. I will. I want to.

-You have to work together as one man!

I'm alright. I'm alright. I can do it on my own.

I can. I will. I want to!

-You made it. You made it. Well done.

Thank you, Sergeant.

46

10:40

Boys lined up.

Sparky crying.

-What's wrong Sparky?

My arm

-What's wrong?

It's burning and throbbing. It's sore.

-Okay. I'll speak to the Sergeant.

No, it's alright.

47

10:55

Sparky crying

V/O: The pain, a price worth paying. The right of passage over, a role in Colonel Jooste's world assured.

48

11:04

Sparky

I would like to be a member of the Kommandokorps as a sergeant or something

49

11:11

Colonel Franz Jooste burning the South African flag

Boys saying chant

No one will force us to stand under this flag

We Afrikaners want our freedom. We want our own country. We Afrikaners want our freedom. We want our own country. Burn, bastard burn.
