12:02

Venezuela is burning.

Young demonstrators are fighting to overthrow the system in which they have grown up.

The country was supposed to have become a socialist paradise - but instead the government rules with tear gas and rubber bullets.

12:19

Rafaela Requesens is a student representative. But instead of sitting in lecture halls, she has been hitting the streets.

She wants to fight - until the government gives in.

I cannot report anything good from my experience, and I am now 24 years old. The Venezuelan people are humiliated. We only know this system. But what we know is certainly not democracy.

The government says: Everything is in order. But that's not true. We all suffer from the corruption. Even government officials have to say farewell to their loved ones - not just at the airport, but also at the cemetery.

1.12

Many Venezuelans have chosen to emigrate.

With 1.5 million leaving the country in the last 20 years.

And the number seems to be rising sharply.

1.24

"Petare" - one of the largest slums in Latin America.

The suburb is the constituency of the young politician Miguel Pizarro.

Many residents here have put their hope in the 29-year-old.

There is a lack of food, of medication, and of a future.

Lower: Miguel Pizarro, opposition politician. 01:50

In the end, it is a tragedy that faces us all - whether rich or poor. The crisis puts us all on the same level. As a politician, this fills with me pain. But at the same time, it motivates me to fight against these adversities.

2.14

According to a study, Venezuelans lost an average of 8 kilos in weight in 2016.

In times such as these, it is Pizarro’s duty as a parliamentarian, to bring his constituents food.

02:32

And to listen.

This family has lost a daughter - because important drugs were unavailable.

A fate which the young politician knows from his own experience.

02:45

His sister developed a brain tumour. There were no drugs

So she had to leave the country to seek treatment.

Lower: Miguel Pizarro: Opposition politician. 3.3

It is our responsibility. That is why we are fighting on the streets and calling for elections and the recognition of the elected parliament. There must be enough food and medical care so that no one dies because of a defect. Hunger must not be a daily tragedy for the families in poor districts.

3.21

Venezuela is statistically miserable, boasting the world’s highest rate of inflation, and one of the highest murder rates.

Bread queues snake through the streets  - hard to believe in a country with the world's largest oil reserves.

Food is scarce and expensive.

Child mortality is rising.

It is a country in desperation.

03:43

How did Venezuela reach this point?

Hugo Chavez promised great things when he proclaimed ‘Socialism of the 21st century’.

He brought in petrodollars and nationalized on a grand scale.

Four years after his death and the wheels have come off, brought about by mismanagement, corruption, and falling oil prices.

04:00

Under his successor, Nicolas Maduro, the country has been brought to the brink of ruin.

The government has lost control of the crisis.

But they put the blame on foreign countries, capitalists, and the opposition.

04.15 (Over Voice Man)

They do not want peace. They have manoeuvred themselves into a dead end - and are going to drag us into this abyss.

4.28

The majority of the people have had enough of the Chavistas.

But Maduro ignores their criticism - and wants to dissolve the opposition dominated parliament.

04:40

The delegates have organised a special public meeting in a stadium.

The opposition divided on many fronts, but they are united by the desire for fresh elections.

04:57

Some call Miguel Pizarro, Venezuela’s coolest parliamentarian:

5.5

He entered politics when only a teenager.

Today, he is a member of the centre-right party "Primero Justicia"

05.16 O-Ton (Over Voice Man)

Unfortunately, not all delegates are here, because they were arrested by the organs of the dictatorship.

Her only offense: thinking differently.

(((O-Ton)))

5.27

Socialism in Venezuela has cheated the people.

05:32

Pizarro comes from an ultra-left family.

His parents are Communists - his father once fought alongside Hugo Chavez.

For Pizarro, however, the old left is obsolete.

5.46 (Over Voice Man)

Lower: Miguel Pizarro: Opposition politician. 05:48

How can you describe yourself as "Left" if you respond to protests with repression, torture, imprisonment and murder. For Venezuela - but also for the world – it is clear: what we have before us is not LEFT, it is not even RIGHT, but the worst in the world - camouflaged as socialism.

6.8

Since the end of March, frustration has forced hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans to take to the streets.

According to NGOs hundreds of protesters have been injured, nearly 3000 detained, and at least 60 dead.

Chavez left behind a bloody legacy.

The President has accused the opposition of inciting violence.

The opposition, in turn, accused the government of violating human rights.

Maduro has reportedly armed citizens.

META: Amateurfotos 06.35-06.43

These pictures show alleged members of Maduro’s militia being publicly humiliated. An act of retribution from an enraged population.

Lower: Rafaela Requesens: Student representative 06.52

The worst would be a civil war. But this is certainly not triggered by us. We do not have weapons but the government wants blood. But we do not want to blood. There are fellow students, friends of mine who are imprisoned and tortured - we do not want that.

7.13

The mobilised students chant: "We are students, not terrorists"

In the struggle against the government, studying has become a secondary concern for many.

7.21

Rafaela Requesens is the president of the most important student association.

She is a 24 years old political scientist.

The level of education has fallen drastically.

What are the benefits of state subsidies when money is worthless?

The frustration among students is enormous.

(((O-Ton)))

07:44

Pizarro and Requesens are both part of a growing movement fighting for a brighter future for Venezuela.

(((O-Ton)))
