Early in the morning Prince Sultan is driven to a palace on the outskirts of Geneva.

It belongs to his uncle, King Fahd of Saudi Arabia.

For the last year BBC Arabic has been investigating the disappearance of three Saudi princes. All were living in Europe, and all have vanished. There’s strong evidence that they were abducted.

My journey begins in the English seaside town of Bournemouth. I’ve come to meet Eddie Ferreira. In 2003 he was Sultan’s communications officer, and knew of the prince’s dispute with the royal family.

I think they were just very unhappy that really he was letting the lid, opening the lid up effectively, on the regime. He was keen on trying to implement changes within the regime, and it just wasn’t very welcomed.

Sultan said the Saudis had frozen his money and assets, so he couldn’t pay his hotel bill or his staff. Then came the meeting on the 12^th of June.

Everybody was awake, certainly Prince Sultan was as well. And the tension started to ramp up, you could feel it in the air. It felt very much like it’s going to be a make or break situation.

Seven months later, In January 2004, the prince resurfaced. In a call to an Arabic news channel, he said he was under house arrest. He described his experiences and named those he held responsible.

I interviewed some witnesses, collected some medical evidence including a medical record from King Faisal Hospital where he was admitted the next day,

 on June 13 of 2003, which indicated that he had aspirated and been intubated in Geneva and was put on a Medevac plane that for some reason was already waiting at the airport.

Intubation is the insertion of a tube into someone’s mouth and airway, to help them breathe after being anaesthetised. The hospital report says this had been done to Sultan – and also that one side of his diaphragm was paralysed, presumably as a result of the assault.

The Saudi ambassador to Switzerland came in with the general manager of the hotel and quite simply just told everybody to vacate the penthouse and get out.

The prince was in Riyadh, our services were no longer required, and we could leave.

Sometimes their behaviour has been scandalous. But while stories of drugs, prostitutes and violence may embarrass the Al Saud, far more dangerous are those princes – like Sultan – who call for reform, or even challenge the family’s right to rule.

So I’m meeting Prince Khaled bin Farhan al Saud. His branch of the family fell out of favour long ago, and more recently he began to question the Saudi regime as a whole. Eventually he fled to Germany, where he claimed political asylum.

The way they deal with opponents from inside the ruling family, first of all preventing you from travelling. They prevent you from travelling. They limit you financially. If they feel that you might speak out or that there’s a risk, house arrest. And this depends on if you are well connected or not. And jail as well.

This is Prince Turki bin Bandar al Saud. Once he was a major in the Saudi police, with responsibility for policing the royal family itself. That gave him access to highly sensitive information.

Naturally, as an advocate of human rights within what happens in Saudi society with regards to oppression and disappearance of individuals and the violation of freedoms, we used to discuss these issues very frequently we would exchange opinions.

The Saudis reacted as they had with Prince Sultan, and tried to persuade Turki to return. When the Deputy Minister of the Interior called, the prince recorded the conversation and posted it online.

The leak embarrassed the Saudis. They turned up the pressure, but Turki still refused to return.

People would call him to try and convince him to return to Saudi Arabia simply for discussion

And there were people who would outright threaten him, from unknown numbers.

He knew very well that he was wanted by Saudi intelligence, that the royal family was never going to leave him alone. As the saying goes, they’ll have his head. He knew this.

He used to call me every month or two. Then he disappeared for four or five months. I was suspicious. I got information from within the kingdom, from one of the higher officers, that Turki bin Bandar was their guest. So they had taken him, he was kidnapped.

Although Wael believed Turki had been kidnapped, I needed to find out more. So I asked Prince Khaled, who’s still well connected in Saudi Arabia.
