Comme nous vivons sans électricité, je n'ai qu' une lampe torche et c'est très compliqué.

Il y a des nuits où je dois même gérer deux accouchements à la suite.

Le pire moment c'est quand l'enfant meurt à l'accouchement. 03 59 36 Parfois le bébé est déja mort, et j'ai du mal à le faire sortir, mais dieu m'aide.

02.20 The village of AZOKANGOUDOU [Azzo-Kon-Goo-Doh] lives by the rhythm of the sun, with no electricity nor clean water.

In such conditions, half of all newborns die within thier first year.

C'est mon village et mon village n a  pas encore amorcé le développement comme je le vois ailleurs, et mon souci // c'est d'oeuvrer par tous les moyens pour sortir ce village, de l'ignorance

 

 

My name is Samson.

 

I'm 45 years old, I am a teacher at Azokangoudo.

 

This is my village, and it has yet to undergo any real development like other places have.

 

My goal is to work for as long as it takes to lift this village out of ignorance.

Children are not able to study at home because there is no light.

 

So we have to revisit lessons that we have already completed.

 

This creates serious setbacks for the curriculum.

Il y a beaucoup d'enfants qui quittent le village parcequ'il s n ont pas le soutien nécessaire /// déja a partir du CM1 ou CM2, ils s en vont au nigeria, c est pays limitrophe

ils s ent vont chercher du travail la bas

des qu ils commencent à grandir , ils  s en vont en aventure, l exode rural . Certains meurent parce qu ils sont en quete d'emplois, de jobs, de quoi survivre, mainetenant l electricité au village ca permettra de maintenir ces jeunes la dans le village.

 

 

There are many children leaving the village because they don't have the support needed

 

from the ages of 9 or 10. Some go to Nigeria or other neighbouring countries looking for work.

 

As soon as they get old enough, they go seeking adventure - the rural exodus.

 

Some die in their search for work, a job, a means of surviving.

 

If the village can get power, then hopefully the young will stay.

05.23 The lifeblood has left Azokangoudou. Today, its 2500 inhabitants live of subsistance farming.

Samson, the school teacher, maintains the land inherited from his father.

j'étais en terminale quand mon papa est décédé. Papa avait des plantations, et je suis son garçon ainé / Laisser ce champ toute cette peine que le vieux a eu à réaliser, ce grand trésor, j'ai jugé bon d'aller entretenir ce champ la.

 

I was in my last year of school when my father died in 1993.

 

My father had farmland, and I am his eldest son, so I couldn't let all of the hard work

 

he put into maintaining this treasure go to waste.

 

I made the right decision in maintaining this land.

06.22 Yams, cotton or corn, these lands at the centre of the country are fertile.

Farming is Benin’s primary resource, but the land is under-exploited.

With no electric pumps, the land cannot be irrigated.

C'est une agriculture de subsistance, je ne cultive pas pour le commerce parce que les moyens d'exploitations pour cultiver, ne sont pas des moyens appropriés.

C'est une agriculture traditionnelle, ce n est pas mécanisé.

Si l'électricité était chez nous, auprès du paysan ca diminuerait largement ses peines 03 06 12

Tout cela sera transformé, changé par des tracteurs, nous aurions des batteuses, des machines qui aideront pour la récolte, des machines qui vont transformer nos produits que nous cultivons.

 

This is purely subsistence farming.

 

I don't do any commercial farming because we don't have the means

 

to properly cultivate the land, because we only have traditional farming methods.

 

There is no mechanisation. If we had electricity in the village

 

that was available to farmers, it would greatly reduce their burden.

 

All of this would be transformed if we had tractors.

 

We could run threshing machines, and machines that could help with the harvest,

 

machines which would transform our farming efforts.

07.25 Samson’s village is preparing to undergo a small revolution.

Soon, electricity will be made available.

In Cotonou [Cot-o-noo], engineer Bruno Attalou promised to bring power.

He organises the volunteers of Electricians Without Borders to bring power to ioslated village communities.

The purchase the necessary equipment from the Andogpka [An-dock-pah] market for their mission.

08.04 : Fuses, bulbs and cabling will do for now, as the most crucial component has already been sent from France – solar pannels.

Together, they aim to bring this new technology to the country.

le bénin n est pas autosuffisant en matiere d energie electrique, cad qu il n a pas une source de production suffisante a lui, il doit acheter l'electricite du nigeria ou du ghana , les deux pays sont aussi en crise et ont leur besoins qui grandissent donc d ou nous de chercher les beninois les possibilités de decentraliser  cette électricité. Donc l option photovoltaïque nous parait la mieux adaptée au bénin vu le rayonnement solaire au bénin .

 

Benin is not self-sufficient when it comes to electrical supplies.

 

Benin does not produce its own electricity, it has to buy it's power from Nigeria or Ghana.

 

But both of these countries are also in crisis, and their own needs are growing.

 

So it is our responsibility to keep looking for ways, as citizens of Benin,

 

to create a decentralised power grid.

 

So we see photovoltaic cells as the best way forward for Benin,

 

thanks to the abundance of sunlight here.

I say to myself; there's a lot to do, there's so much to do,

 

so we are often shocked.

 

People don't need much to see a big change in their lives.

 

Even one light illuminating a small corner of a village

and will make a whole nation happy.

Bruno has planned a courtesy visit to the royal palace.

Whilst Benin became a Republic upon gaining its independence in 1960, each region has kept it’s own king, as per ancient customs, highly respected by his subjects.

Nous électrifions les dispensaires, ecoles, ce qu'on appelle infrastructures socio communautaires 01 14 26 mais aussi nous mettons en place une petite activité génératrice de revenus, une cabine de recharge ou les populations 01 14 31 peuvent venir charger la batterie de leur portables 01 14 40

But we also try to put in place some modest revenue-generating sources,

 

like small charging stations that people can use to charge their phone batteries.

On obéissait à nos parents.

Moi bêtement, je suis restée ici dans cette obscurité et dans l'ignorance, et désormais j'ai mes petits enfants à charge.

 

I stay in spite of myself.

 

When we were young, we didn't think things could change.

 

At that time, you couldn't marry outside of the village, and you couldn't leave the community.

 

We obeyed our parents.

 

I stupidly stayed here in obscurity and ignorance, and I have to look after my children.

Je souhaite trouver la paix interieure, ne plus avoir peur des accidents dans mon travail au dispensaire. Dieu m a donné une descendance. Mes enfants ne sont pas assez riches pour prendre soin de moi. Mais je souhaite qu'ils trouvent le bon chemin. Je souhaite, qu'ils puissent trouver à manger quand je serai morte, qu'ils s en sortent sans moi, pour que mes efforts n'aient pas été vains

 

I hope to find some inner peace, and no longer live in fear of accidents in the clinic.

 

God gave me descendants, but my children are not wealthy enough to care for me.

 

I hope that they find the right path,that they can find food after I die.
