DOWNTOWN SEOUL, IS A PLACE WHERE NEW TRENDS – LIKE MINATURE PET DOGS – CLASH
WITH OLD TRENDS ….LIKE EATNG DOG It’s the end of
summer, and for some, it’s THE BEST time to eat the traditional dish of the
Bok Nal festival… dog meat soup. In Korea it’s

restaurants make it special. They put various types of spicies,

own unusual food, but somehow only Korea has been put in a spotlight. I don’t
think we’re particularly weird. So I hope people in other countries don’t see Koreans as

70% of Koreans say they don’t eat dog and growing numbers are engaging in
direct battle with the dog meat industry like activist Jinu Jeong (Jinu Jung) who
who is desperate to save dogs from slaughter. So when he hears about struggling DOG farms, he steps

Jinu wants to rescue a few dogs immediately, but
the farmer is wary – and holding out for at least some cash…BEFORE HE HANDS

President of the dog meat association, Kim Jong-Suk says EATING DOG MEAT IS PART OF THEIR
HERITAGE … ‘People say we started eating dog meat in the stone age’ …AND FOR BIG
FARMS THAT FOLLOW GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS, HE SAYS BUSINESS IS BOOMING. There
are about a million people, a million people who are working in this industry. In
order to produce 2 million dogs, we need to raise 3 million dogs. That was we
can slaughter 2 million dogs. That’s how it works. V/O: President Kim Jong Suk introduces me to farmer Kim Jong
Ill. V/O: … who grants me rare access to his
industrial-scale dog farm. It’s a far cry from the struggling farm I’ve just
seen. V/O: I’m told this
place complies with government regulations – goes through two tonnes of chicken per week, and has a faeces-processing
plant worth over half a million dollars. V/O:
Kim Jong Gil explains that his several thousand meat dogs are Tosas – a type of mastiff. And that they’re not the same

before the National Assembly that would de-classify dogs as LIvestock Right now, dogs are treated the same as chickens
or pigs, but IF THE new law IS PASSED
IT could ban Lawmakers
have proposed legislations that would make a dog farming illegal, hoping them

THIS KIND OF ACTIVISM has been
bad for business here at Moran Market – which was once the bustling hub of
the dog meat industry. I’m here to try and talk to
the last remaining dog butcher at the market - but he’s not too pleased to
see me… Eventually Shin
bong cho agrees to talk, but again, I can’t film
his dogs. He even covers
up the CCTV monitor of their cages… before telling
me that further legislation against the dog meat industry will ruin his life
- and that the million people who work in it don’t deserve to be singled out… Dog
farmers are all good people, they would rather die if they are not able to
raise dogs. VO: Mr Shin and his family have done well from the dog meat
industry. It’s put his kids through Uni, and helped his family live
comfortably (SEE PIC ON WALL) D ques: If the ban goes through what
does it mean for people in the industry? Literally,
it would mean that workers in this industry will all lose their jobs. However,
they all have their own families to support. So they won’t easily give up, ALT VO: I ask Mu Shin what he would do if the
legislation went through – couldn’t he just find a different job?

succumbed… Willingly handing over his
dogs to the Humane Society International Whilst government regulation is making business tough for small scale
farmers, it’s the change in eating habits that have sent him broke D:
So what’s the reason for the downturn in the industry is it government
regulation or is the lack of popularity of dog meat? 01:56:57 – 01:57:09 Well, the government’s regulation has been so strong and people also
don’t think like before anymore. 01:57:09 – 01:57:14 People don’t prefer dogs, and have stopped eating dog meat. The
farmer is now trying to survive by growing chilis and herbs – but his
financial burden has been eased by the Humane Society… Today,
