DEAN CORNISH AND KYLIE GREY

GANGNAM, IN DOWNTOWN SEOUL, IS A PLACE WHERE NEW TRENDS – LIKE MINATURE PET DOGS – CLASH WITH OLD TRENDS  ….LIKE EATNG DOG

It’s the end of summer, and for some, it’s THE BEST time to eat the traditional dish of the Bok Nal festival… dog meat soup.

In Korea it’s called Boisintang.

Bo-Shin-Tang

DAY 7 CARD 1 - VOX POP 1

Dean: What’s special about the soup?

Sub 2b SUBREEL 2

01:31:01 - 01:31:07

Dog meat isn’t really different from any other  meat. But restaurants make it special. They put various types of spicies, perilla leaves, and sesame seed to remove the smell.

V/O: Dog meat is purported to have a variety of health benefits…

Korea men eat the soup because they believe it’s good for virility (sexual stamina)

Every country has their own unusual food, but somehow only Korea has been put in a spotlight. I don’t think we’re particularly weird.

So I hope people in other countries don’t see Koreans as if we’re barbarians.

02:06:23 – 02:06:43

I also have a pet dog, but I eat dog meat for health.

These diners are aware of Korea’s reputation as a nation of dog-eaters, but a growing number of Koreans are finding this notion  - hard to swallow

V/O: These days 70% of Koreans say they don’t eat dog and growing numbers are engaging in direct battle with the dog meat industry like  activist Jinu Jeong (Jinu Jung) who who is desperate to save dogs from slaughter.

So when he hears about struggling DOG farms, he steps in

Card 6 SYNC - DRIVING THROUGH DOG MEAT VALLEY

(SUB 9)

01:07:38 – 01:07:48

There is a dog farm in Gimpo, and there are about 390 dogs kept there.

01:07:48 - 01:07:53

The farm owner wishes to shut down the business and change his job.

01:07:53 – 01:08:09

So I am driving there to meet him. We can  discuss rescue plans and we’ll  also negotiate a price of dogs.

V/O: AT FRIST  the farmer won’t let our camera inside…

Dean PTC

I’ve walked in and out a couple of times and what I can tell you is that there’s rancid meat everywhere, flys and a lot of unhappy dogs.

After agreeing not to identify him the farmer finally  allows me to film inside …..it’s easy to see THIS FARMER’S BUSINESS is on the skids

Can you tell me what is your life like here?

01:26:45 – 01:26:50

I never have a day off here. I work every day.

V/O: This place is typical of many small farms that doon’t meet strict government regulations around raising dogs… (PAUSE) these farms are being forced to close

These dogs  still need feeding  but I don’t even have money to put petrol in my car.

4.09 - tascam audio ‘fuck i think i’m gonna be sick'

IM TAKEN TO SEE THE DOGS CAGES

It’s about 60 metres long and it is actually about one, two , three, four, five about  ten cages deep.

VO

I see dead dog in cages with living ones.

This one is dead because the other one killed it.

It’s obvious ChoTHIS FARMER can no longer look after his dogs -

-but he’s not prepared to give them up either…

I had a tough life, but I still saved up and started this business. Now my life is a complete mess because of dogs.

These dogs are all going to die

If you want to help me, you need to make a decision.

V/O: Jinu wants to rescue a few dogs immediately, but the farmer is wary – and holding out for at least some cash…BEFORE HE HANDS ANY DOGS OVER

Jinu’s going to have to raise the funds and come back another day.

DEAN AND JINU BACK IN CAR

So Mr Jinu how did that go?

02:20:40

Sub 15

Jinu 02:20:40 – 02:20:51

I tried to negotiate and rescue at least some of small dogs.

02:20:51- 02:21:06

But I wasn’t able

While activists like Jinu and a growing number of Koreans are trying to stamp out the dog meat industry…

VO: …the President of the dog meat association, Kim Jong-Suk  says EATING DOG MEAT IS PART OF THEIR HERITAGE …

‘People say we started eating dog meat  in the stone age’

…AND FOR BIG FARMS THAT FOLLOW GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS, HE SAYS BUSINESS IS BOOMING.

There are about a million people, a million people who are working in this industry.

In order to produce 2 million dogs, we need to raise 3 million dogs. That was we can slaughter 2 million dogs. That’s how it works.

V/O: President Kim Jong Suk  introduces me to farmer Kim Jong Ill.

V/O: … who grants me rare access to his industrial-scale dog farm. It’s a far cry from the struggling farm I’ve just seen.

V/O: I’m told this place complies with government regulations – goes through two tonnes of chicken per week, and has a faeces-processing plant worth over half a million dollars.

V/O: Kim Jong Gil explains that his several thousand meat dogs are Tosas – a type of mastiff. And that they’re not the same as pets

DOG FARMER OTF INTERVIEW

Sub 39

01:50:22 – 01:50:37

Our meat dog is a different kind of breed that is specifically developed to be served at table.

Sub 41

01:55:08 – 01:55:16

We don’t see their pet dogs as meat dogs.

Sub 42

01:55:39 - 01:55:42

Another thing, they are too small to make profit anyway.

V/O: …as we walk across a wide river of dog poop, I start to get an idea of the scale of this farm…

(upsot) – ‘ this is where all the new cages are going, yeah?’

…but there’s one thing I can’t film… and that’s the dogs. This is as close as I’m allowed…

Dean upsot

These dogs are healthy and nice why can’t we film them?

UPSOT KIM JONG-IL

You’re probably not going to do this but animal activists edit the images

VO

THIS IS  apparently a showcase farm.

But the Korean parliament MAY SOON vote on legislation that would make dog meat farming illegal –  SO the farmers are understandably a bit touchy about how we’ll portray what’s going on inside

“Thanks for showing me your farm. Well, some of it anyway”

V/O: I’m traveling to Gimpo. An area with so many farms, it’s known as ‘Dog Valley’.

anti dog meat activists who do manage to negotiate  the release of dogs from farms  - bring them to places like this……

Hello, hi. Welcome, welcome to our shelter. Savekoreandogs

[00:20:53] NK Would you like to meet our dogs?

[00:20:53] REP I'd love to meet them

INSIDE SHELTER - UPSOT NAMI

[00:20:55] NK Yeah.. Coon, Natalie, Thani, and this is Dog and then this is um Tess and Toss, very new, they just came in actually. and Darwin is my favourite boy.

[00:21:26] REP These tails don’t stop wagging, they're so pleased to see you whenever you walk past.

DEAN UPOST

What sort of lives do you think these dogs have had?

00:15:17] NK Oh, they were all supposed to be thrown into boiling pots for this Bok Nal… but I personally um, cannot save all the dogs, but I do as many or as much as I can.

.

[00:23:03] REP So these guys will probably go to America?

[00:23:03] NK Yes.

[00:23:04] REP Where else do you send your dogs?

[00:23:05] NK Uh, Canada, and UK .. 1700 dogs in the US alone.

[00:23:27] REP 1700? [00:23:26]

 NK yes.

[00:23:28] REP wow

V/O: Nami sends dogs overseas because the local population are reluctant to adopt so-called ‘meat dogs’…

DEAN SPOTS MINA

So who’s this?

[00:29:42] NK Oh this is Mina, Mina is going to Los Angeles,

[00:30:08] REP Wow, so she's going to be an LA dog?

00:30:54] REP Wow,

[00:31:00] REP Hey. Mina. How are you doing? How’re you doing? Might see you on the other side girl

V/O:Nami is a former university professor who gave up gave up her day job

…and dedicated her life to shutting down farms and rescuing dogs.

[01:00:43] NK (CU PHONE RESCUE VIDEO)

[01:00:52] NK This is Mina..

[01:01:03] REP Hold it up a little bit

[01:01:08] NK You see, she refused to come out...

00:24:52]. There was a slaughter scene right in front of her. That butcher used to hang the dogs.

[00:46:50] … I'm one of the very first one to let the world know about what's going on in Korea when it comes to what you - what they call 'meatdog' you know what I mean.  A dog is a dog.. There's no such thing 'meat dog' and 'pet dog' you know.

I don't want to see that signs of dog meat soup anymore in this country.

That's why I'm striving foryou know, dogs they never let you down. You know you love them once, they love you back forever.

VO:  While Nami fights to save one dog at a time -

RIGHT NOW There is a bill before the National Assembly that would de-classify dogs as LIvestock

Right  now, dogs are treated the same as chickens or pigs, but IF THE new law  IS PASSED IT could ban

Lawmakers have proposed legislations that would make a dog farming illegal, hoping them to pass by the end of the year.

13.58 –

V0:

But this group of activists isn’t willing to wait that long. They’re taking matters into their own hands, by raiding dog slaughterhouses in the dead of night.

ACTIVIST Jinu Jung, is joining them.

I’ve been warned things could get violent

V/O ALT: This dog slaughterhouse has taken over the corner of a public park. The activists believe it flouts regulations by processing sick dogs in overcrowded, cruel conditions. They’re here to document the killing, and report it to authorities.

ACTUALITY: Jino Jung getting the team ready.

Jinu

0:45:14 – 0:45:21

I can hear the sound of compression

0:45:21 - 00:45:30

So you know where they take the dogs out from the truck, it looks like they are working there at the moment but the back door is still closed.

V/O: Video evidence will shared on social media…

We are here at Taepyeong –Dong slaughter house in Seongnam for the third raid.

00:54:07 – JINU militant guy prepares to break in

Care Leader (IN SLAUGHTERHOUSE)

00:55:10 - 0:55:14

I can see the collar around the neck it means that someone used to have them as a pet. CUT TO DOG SOONER

0:55:16 – 00:55:27

These (dogs) are epidemic (contagious) and people eat them

Is this your job – do your work here?

01:01:02

You are killing animals here, how can you call this place a shop

01:01:01- Meat worker

Just get out

V/O: It’s Annie Ham’s first raid – like many, she’s finding it hard to come to terms with what she’s seeing…

There is a dog that has just been strangled and he still has the noose around his neck with something to beat him with..he is still tied to that rope

1.12.31 – some of them still crave human attention and affection but we are the ones doing this to them

V/O: Next door, tension rises as the activists discover an incredibly gruesome site. This is where the recently-killed dogs are being torched of their fur, and butchered.

PAUSE

Jinu (YELLING AGGRESSIVELY AT BUTCHERS)

01:16:27You bastards, You bastards, you bastards what are you doing?

CHANGE SUB SEE NOTE

01:16:41 Mother fuckers

01:16:45 You butcher bastard

01:16:50 Mother fuckers, see what you guys are doing here

01:16:55 You Chinese bastards

01:16:58 I am going to report all you guys as illegal Chinese migrants

VO: But  the slaughter house manager is so enraged she comes out to attack one of the activists

…even for an experienced activist like Jinu, tonight’s scene was horrific…

Jinu after raid

01:30:03 – 01:30:21

I have been to many slaughter houses but when I go back home from this place I can’t go to sleep because this is very sad and I am a traumatized

THIS KIND OF ACTIVISM  has been bad for business here at Moran Market – which was once the bustling hub of the dog meat industry.  I’m here to try and talk to the last remaining dog butcher at the market - but he’s not too pleased to see me…

Eventually Shin bong cho agrees to talk, but again, I can’t film his dogs.

He even covers up the CCTV monitor of their cages…

before telling me that further legislation against the dog meat industry will ruin his life - and that the million people who work in it don’t deserve to be singled out…

Dog farmers are all good people, they would rather die if they are not able to raise dogs.

VO: Mr Shin and his family have done well from the dog meat industry. It’s put his kids through Uni, and helped his family live comfortably (SEE PIC ON WALL)

D ques: If the ban goes through what does it mean for people in the industry?

Literally, it would mean that workers in this industry will all lose their jobs.

However, they all have their own families to support. So they won’t easily give up,

ALT VO: I ask Mu Shin what he would do if the legislation went through – couldn’t he just find a different job?

Sub 26

01:09:09 – 01:09:21

What was your intention when you asked me whether I wanted to change my job that I have done for 30 years?

Sub 28

01:07:57 – 01:08:00

Leave now. Leave please. Just leave

VO:

In Korea EVERYONE INVOLVED IN THIS billion dollar industry is under pressure...

ALT SHORTER

V/O: and a couple of hours out of Seoul, one farmer has succumbed…  Willingly handing over his dogs to the Humane Society International

Whilst government regulation is making business tough for small scale farmers, it’s the change in eating habits that have sent him broke

D: So what’s the reason for the downturn in the industry is it government regulation or is the lack of popularity of dog meat?

01:56:57 – 01:57:09

Well, the government’s regulation has been so strong and people also don’t think like before anymore.

01:57:09 – 01:57:14

People don’t prefer dogs, and have stopped eating dog meat.

The farmer is now trying to survive by growing chilis and herbs – but his financial burden has been eased by the Humane Society…

Today, his dogs are being vaccinated, and prepared for adoption overseas…

[00:35:07] ADAM oh do you want to hand me that one?

[00:35:08] W3 Yeah, that'd be great. Thank you.

D:How many farms have you closed down?

01:39:40] LW this is number 13. So yeah. Thirteenth farm. And many many more visited. So yeah, it's a long process, but obviously worth it.

“Not all Koreans are happy about foreigners interfering in their dog meat debate – but the farmer is happy to have their help

Farmer

SUB 49

02:10:07 – 02:10:14

I am very grateful that foreigners visit us and do the jobs here like this.

SUB 50

02:10:16 – 02:10:27

Koreans think this is weird, but I think it is something that we should be grateful for.

VO:  back in Seoul, the end of the Bok Nal dog-eating festival is being marked by a candlelight vigil. Concerned citizens have gathered to demand the AN END TO of the dog meat industry…

THE POLITITIAN  - PUSHING THE BILL TO OUTLAW DOG FARMING Is here - Lee Sang Don.

He tells the crowd that MODERN KOREA should move on from its dog eating days

DR LEE ON STAGE

01:27:04 -01:27:18 People in Seoul didn’t eat dogs.

People from Seoul are educated. Koreans these days are highly educated, and we have a strong economy.

01:27:1801:27:22

Now that the dark days are behind us.

01:27:22 – 01:27:28

Look, in the past, people in Papua New Guinea used to eat humans because they were lack of proteins, right?

01:27:28 – 01:27:33

Would they still say that it’s their food culture?

01:27:33 – 01:27:36

No they wouldn’t. That’s why it’s ridiculous. (LAUGHTER)

V/O: outside - members of the Meat Dog Association have turned up to keep an eye on proceedings

DOG MEAT PRESIDENT SUBS

00:00:27-00:00:41

today, we’re here at the rally where animal activists demonstrate against eating dog meat

00:00:41-00:00:48

And we’re here to voice our opinions against them.

00:01:19-00:01:23

There were some scuffles going on.

00:01:23-00:01:32

because the police tried to stop us from accessing the rally.

VO: It’s an emotional issue – and as anti dog-farming legislation moves through parliament, it looks like half the population will be devastated if it fails; and the industry will be decimated if it’s passed.

V/O: Back at Nami’s Kim’s shelter, Mina is getting ready FOR HER NEW LIFE IN LOS ANGELES…

[00:24:52] ….-  I really like you to understand that they have seen the worst, so it's quite natural for them to have the trauma. [00:25:50]

[00:39:29] NK A beauty.. Ah Miss Korea.. Mina.. See her face is shining.

[00:39:40] REP She does look happy.

V/O: it’s taken a month of vaccinations, rehabilitation and planning to get Mina ready for America…

Nami: so these dogs are so lucky I would say one out of one hundred thousand.

D: They really get spoiled?

after all they really have to make up for the lost years.

V/O: Three weeks later, in Los Angeles, Mina has been brought to an adoption event.

This is a bit like speed-dating for dogs and potential owners… and the competition is tough.

Mina’s getting lots of pats… but no potential matches.

Until Melanie and Scott arrive.

I would love to foster her.. we just have to be in agreement. Let’s take her for a walk first

VO: Their dog Harley is a US rescue – and they seem to be getting along.

VO: So they AGREE TO TAKE  IT to the next STAGE – a neighborhood walk.

12.40 Melanie-it was love at first sight! DC-so Maybe she’ll end up at your place then? [ Scot gives look to the camera] - Maybe...
