PTC: Behind these mountains is Myanmar. We’re standing in Thailand and just over there is a highway making it really easy for traffickers to bring drugs over the border and straight to the cities of Thailand. This area used to be known for heroin and opium trafficking but that’s on the decline. Meth is on the rise. It’s a perfect combination of geography, infrastructure, supply and demand.

MANY ENCOUNTERS END UP IN GUN FIGHTS.

TRAFFICKERS WITH BACKPACKS FULL OF METH CAN RUN ACROSS THE BORDER IN JUST A FEW MINUTES.

[00:00:45] They still have to fund not just their army they fund and fuel and equip their army but also they have to ... supposedly their population lack of a better description that they're following. They have to pay them somehow // feed them somehow. // It’s too much //  financial benefit for them to be out of the trade.

THE HARASSMENT MAY HAVE STOPPED BUT THE VILLAGE STILL HAS TO FIND A WAY TO EARN MONEY.

[06:35] The government doesn’t help us with anything.  [06:37]We pay for things ourselves. [06:41]We’re working as volunteers. [06:43]We are volunteers [06:48] to improve the lives of our friends and family in the village. We can’t just wait for help. [07:08]

There's certain tacit approvals. . I mean to say that is that is the military directly involved and there's always the question you get Is the military directly involved in the meth trade? Unlikely. Are they allowing it to occur in their areas of operation. Yeah they are.

IT’S A DEADLY CYCLE,

DRUGS FUND THE WARS AND THE WARS PROVIDES THE PERFECT CAMOUFLAGE TO KEEP THE DRUGS FLOWING.

804_007

00:16:44:23-00:17:21:12

It's a difficult question to [00:14:09] answer. I mean the narcotics trade the meth trade certainly fuels the conflict and you know the proceeds from the narcotics trade are used to fund militia groups. whether it be the K.I.A or whether it be the Wa, it doesn't really matter. The proceeds from the narcotics trade are used to fund these groups providing weapons providing food paid to soldiers and so forth. So that's certainly not helpful to the peace process.
