“Phillip”

We interpreted what they say to our soldiers, and what the soldiers say to our people.

1:01:11:00

Soldier. Saddam statue being pulled down

“Phillip”

When I start working with US army, I was trying to help them to help us because we spend our life suffering because of Saddam regime.

1:01:24:01

 People cheering, Phillip interview

“Phillip”

We have to be the point of contact between army and local nationals

1:01:32:02

Soldiers with man , George interview, soldiers with men & villagers

George Packer

American’s couldn’t do anything in Iraq or Afghanistan without local people. They did not speak the language, they didn’t know the lay of the land. We were deaf and blind.

 1:01:51:22

Malik on screen being interviewed

“Malik"

My interpreter name is Malik. That’s for my safety because of my employment directly with the U.S. forces

1:01:59:17

Soldiers with prisoners walking in single file

“Malik”

I’ve tried every way possible to get out of here.

1:02:04:22

“Malik”

Nobody likes us to be working with the United States as an interpreter.

1:02:12:06

Don’t you understand these peoples lives are in danger as we speak? They’ve been marked for death. They’re going to die, they’re going to be killed.

Sgt. Paul Braun

That is where we’re going - that’s Iraq. As you can see we are literally in the middle of nowhere. The only cool part about this place, it’s got some killer sunsets. See ya later.

1:03:58:19

Mural of Saddam, soldiers in tank. Soldiers with Afghan man and interpreter.

Sgt. Paul Braun

As American soldiers, we had difficulty communicating with the Iraqi’s. It was common for us to employ local nationals or other Iraqi’s to serve as interpreter or translator for the soldiers.

1:04:16:07

Soldiers and Iraqi men walking through gate, interview with Paul braun, Humvees with soldiers, interpreter riding in Humvee - mask covering face.

Sgt. Paul Braun

The interpreters were considered to be traitors to their country, traitors to their relgion. They either had to wear a mask over their face, had to use a fake name. But after a while people found out who they were.

1:04:33:22

Soldiers in Humvees, “Down with America” graffiti, bullet ridden glass in vehicle, overturned car.

Sgt. Paul Braun

We kept hearing reports of an interpreter turning on the soldiers. Help with a coordinated attack or a suicide bomb, and blowing himself up and killing soldiers.

1:04:49:10

Photo of Paul braun, Phillip lighting cigarette, taking drag, exhaling.

Sgt. Paul Braun

Several interpreters were offered to us. We can’t call an interpreter by their real name - that’s when he lit up his cigarette and he said “you will call me Phillip Morris”. That’s how we ended up with his name

1:05:09:00

Side photo of Paul, Paul with gun, interview with Phillip

“Phillip”

Ya know he came with his mohawk, with his gray hair, with his full gear, with his rifle. And he gave me this serious look, “If you try to mess with me or my soldiers, I will kill you”

1:05:25:05

Interview with Paul

Sgt. Paul Braun

And he starts to laugh, I’m like what do you think is so funny about this. He says, one day we will sit in America and laugh at this conversation over tea.

Things would have been a lot worse if we didn’t have interpreters working for us. And Phillip was the best one I’ve ever came across.

But that’s our life, I have no choice.

1:07:43:11

There’s no future in Afghanistan as an interpreter. With all the threats we have.

1:08:01:05

“Zabihullah Mujahid” - Taliban spokesperson

Any type of cooperation with the Americans or their allies - will make you one of them. Interpreters who are sill cooperating with the foreign forces, if they are supporting them in their work of invasion, they are the enemies of our nation. They are enemies of Islam. They are collaborators of the infidels, so legally and morally we have the right to finish them off. (Pashto)

1:08:58:17

Within days of the last US troops leaving Iraq a wave of violence swept through -

Violence in Iraq has reached the highest it has seen in years -

The powerful armed group the ISIL is already in control of several cities -

Iraq is now in the grip of a crisis as bad as anything since the Americans left.

1:10:27:10

Women crying, Phillip recording himself, Paul interview, video of Phillip w/ children

Sgt. Paul Braun

Here’s a man who became my brother, that we needed to get out of that situation. What is it gonna take to bring an interpreter and his family to the United States?

1:10:42:01

Paul interview, reading letter to camera

Sgt. Paul Braun

To whom this may concern, this letter is in reference to Khalid Awda, also known by his interpreter name of “Phillip Morris.” I’m honored to have worked so closely with him. I can say that I could think of no better person to be allowed entry into the United States.

1:11:22:17

Mujtaba walking facing camera, entering building. Shots of Afghan men in poppy field

Mujtaba

I was working with the U.S. military forces in Afghanistan as an interpreter, and for the DEA (drug enforcement administration) forces. We’ve been tracing wires, telephone calls, of Taliban…

1:11:39:13

Man with wheelbarrow at river, flag blowing in wind,

Nine years ago, I married. My wife is, how do I say it? Hamroz - or something, “close friend”. I have three children. My elder child is my daughter. Her name is Zahra. The second one is my son, Bahram. And my younger son is Behzat.

Kite in tree, article in new yorker, Packer interview, still photos of Iraqi’s

George Packer

I wrote a long article in the New Yorker about Iraqi’s who were being hunted down. I never really reported anything that made me so deeply angry. Kind of felt personally, in some ways implicated, as an American.

1:13:21:01

George Packer giving report on C-Span, shots of Packer giving report to committee

George Packer

Those who worked either directly or indirectly for the U.S. Government, I found that these Iraqis who supported and trusted us most now feel abandoned by us.

1:14:18:20

Paul sitting down to table with coffee mug, looking over papers

Sgt. Paul Braun

You’re not really prepared for this long of a journey. How many years this takes, how many phone calls its been, how many letter and emails we’ve had to write.

1:14:33:20

Paul at table on phone, shots of photos

Paul / State Dept. Representative

Paul: This is Paul.

Rep: Just some background information is helpful. Paul: Yeah, he was actually my interpreter while I was over there 2009/2010, and if it wasn’t for him I would not be here having this conversation with you, so.

Rep: Well, unfortunately these things take time.

Paul: Four and a half years we’ve been on that.

Rep: Yeah, 4 to 5 years, unbelievable. That’s… Anyways, um, okay…

1:15:10:15

Shot of snow from Paul’s house, Mujtaba interview

Mujtaba

I decided to apply. Just tried my chance.

1:15:18:13

But I know that there were people who were waiting four years, five years. Until that time maybe I will be killed or one of my kids or something bad may happen to me.

1:15:35:08

Photo of Mujtaba and sons, Mujtaba interview, birds flying, mountains in background.

Mujtaba

As far as I was waiting…almost… ten months for the result. I thought that I did not get it. I don’t wait for SIV to be processed. I decided to leave.

1:15:57:00

We arrived to Turkey and I was looking for a smuggler - to cross us from the sea to Greece.

1:16:29:07

Mujtaba

I was looking for a safe place. Europe, maybe Germany, maybe Sweden… Any country where there is no Taliban, no Daesh (ISIS). Just to have… To be safe with your family, that’s it.

1:16:48:04

Shots of sea, shore

Mujtaba

Sometimes we said, “it’s very near, we can go by swimming.” But… the bad thing happened, the boat was overloaded.

1:17:06:22

When the boat touched with the waves, in a second, it gone down.

1:17:14:11

Sea and waves, underwater, Mujtaba interview, Mujtaba sitting looking out window. Close up of Mujtaba’s face

Mujtaba

I tried to grab my daughter or my wife because they were sitting next to me. The pressure of water maybe pushed them backside, or… I can’t catch them. I was trying to leave myself to drown. The only thing that made me to be alive, or rescue myself, is - Bahram. Because I was sure that he’s alive, I can rescue him. I was thinking, “What will happen to Bahram if I don’t rescue myself?”

1:18:36:00

Malik sitting on couch, writing

Malik

I have been waiting for my SIV almost four years. If SIV was designed for people who’s in direct serious threat, so where’s my Special Immigration Visa?

1:19:32:03

“Malik”

I was grown up with the U.S. forces. I always think of them like my family. As I walked to the airfield, because we were close to the airfield, where we lived, we used to go there, they used to give us candies, waters… I was a kid back then.

1:20:16:06

“Malik”

This is all my certificates and documents - that I have from the U.S. Army. This is one of the certificates I have received - through the Mission Essential company …who hired me to work with the united States armed forces in Afghanistan. I was selected as a top first interpreter, and that year was 2011. They honored me with this metal. But, I kind of, like, feel forgotten. Because my case has never moved, you know. It’s always in the same situation.

1:20:56:10

Housing subdivision, Minneapolis. Paul interview, photos on iPhone of Phillip with his Visa. Philip leaving house with luggage, preparing to leave.

Sgt. Paul Braun

The process took over four years. It was a very long four years. He sent me a text, and it was a picture of him holding up his visa. Just the look on his face, and his passport, were like - “I got it”. I’m like where are you, he’s like “I’m at home”. Get to Basra as fast as you can, we need to fly you out now.

1:21:29:05

Early morning, shot from driving car. Shots of wife, son, and daughters

Friend 1 (woman): With his family?

Paul: No

Friend 2 (man): Tell them it’s like Mexico, you can walk right across.

Paul: I know. It’s seriously that simple but for them to be here, legally.

Friend 2: Oh I know, Just let them in.

Paul: I know…

1:22:50:00

Phillip and Paul meeting in airport, embracing Shots of Minneapolis river, House and snow falling

Sgt. Paul Braun

For Phillip being a Special Immigration Visa, it allows his immediate family members to be able to come to the United States. So there is a process for it to happen, but unfortunately it’s so slow that if they find him with his family, they won’t hesitate to kill all of them.

News anchor

What’s really setting of alarm bells in the administration tonight is whats happening outside Baghdad. As you mentioned, this military base overrun by ISIS is on the highway leading to Baghdad which  is raising concerns that the militants could get full control over Anbar province.

Everything's going crazy in Iraq. Sorry to say that but there’s no future there. Actually I was born in the same year when Saddam taken over Iraq. So, I know no one except Saddam.

1:26:55:02

Archival footage of Saddam, Iraqi TV, old photos of Phillip

“Phillip”

He being the president in 1979, I was like 6 years old. You know back in Saddam we don’t have cell phones, we don’t have internet. We have just one channel, you know the government channel and the economy back then it was really bad - that was tough.

1:27:31:00

Archival - plane flying, soldiers marching, Saddam, people in street, Phillip taking video.

“Phillip”`

I’m so appreciative to America get rid of Saddam, but to be honest back then we don’t have fear about car blowing up or any bomb in the street. But now, now we have to deal with unsecure situation in my country.

1:28:01:20

Paul: Hi, morning Fran.

Cashier 2: Morning Paul, how are you?

Paul: Good guys, how are you?

Cashier 1: What have you heard from Phillip? (inaudible)

Paul: Uh, the same as always. Gets on facebook just likes a few things. haven’t heard anything in the last two weeks but hopefully soon.

1:33:35:07

Paul at home, looking at computer.

Sgt. Paul Braun

We’ve gone weeks without making a connection. You get to the two week point, you think wow we’re just passed 10 days, we’re at 2 weeks, we’ll hear something soon. And then you approach the 3rd week and now you know that somethings not right.

1:33:24:17

Paul sitting on couch, talking to Phillip on phone.

Sgt. Paul Braun, “Phillip” on phone

Phillip: Hello?

Paul: Morning bud.

Phillip: Good morning, Sabah alkhyr.

Paul: (Paul speaking Arabic - not subtitled). Well we keep watching the news and seeing how things keep getting worse over there.

Phillip: Yeah, it’s really going bad and bad. Last night they caught… one of the biggest leaders of ISIS in my city. It’s good to catch him, but it’s bad, because, you know, ISIS now start coming to our city.

Paul: You’re gonna get your passports when?

Phillip: Usually it will take about three months after the appointment, the first interview.

Paul: OK.

Phillip: But I have to go to Baghdad to finish my family’s passports. I have to bring the birth certificate, police certificate, all this process.

Paul: Alright, be careful.

Phillip: I will.

1:34:34:22

Phillip speaking into camera, walking.

Good morning, it’s about 4 am. I am walking through the car park to get a taxi going to Baghdad.

1:35:00:03

Shots of highway cars driving, video of inside car, shots of militia members, ISIS mural, US soldiers, Baghdad, Phillip smoking.

“Phillip”

From my city where I live, to the capital city, it’s about 100 checkpoints. And most of the check points belong to the militias. I saw a few signs of ISIS, but it wasn’t close to the main route. So we passed this area like really fast. I went to the main office of the Iraqi interior passport section. Now I have to wait for the requirement from the embassy. But when I’m done with my family passports, I will be able to come back to America. Every step I will update you.

1:36:12:00

Malik typing on phone, Malik’s face, checking case status, Malik sitting on bed, turning light out.

Every night before I go to sleep I check my emails, I check my case status. I pray to God, pray to Allah that, hopefully we get some good news from the U.S. embassy side.

1:36:41:18

Phillip kissing his family goodbye, preparing to fly back to America. Phillip arriving at airport in America.

“Phillip”

I spent four months in Iraq. I finish all the paperwork, but if I stay longer it’s gonna be more dangerous for my family. So we decided I should come back to America and wait for my family to join me. Hopefully soon.

Barbers: (Voices in unison - unintelligible)

Barber: We got a lot of envy around here.

Phillip: Have a good day guys, see you.

1:38:02:00

Trump bumper sticker on Pauls truck, Paul and girlfriend watching Trump & Hillary debate.

Television, Debate Moderator / Donald Trump

Moderator: Mr. Trump in December you said this, “Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the United States until our countries representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. We have no choice, we have no choice.” Your running mate said this week that the muslim ban is no longer your position, is that correct.

Trump: The muslim ban is something that in some form has morphed into a extreme vetting. We are going to areas like Syria where they are coming in by the tens of thousands because of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. People are coming into our country like, we have no idea who they are where they are from what their feelings about our country is -

1:38:54:00

Paul feeding dogs, in garage.

Sgt. Paul Braun

Phillip and his family are good people, they’re really good people.

(Talking to dog: Maggie!)

What’s it gonna be like for his children when they come here? People right now have a distant stand offish fear towards the muslim community.

(Talking to dogs: Come on in, alright you girls get some sleep.)

Because we don’t understand that there are good Muslims and bad Muslims, all we see are a focus on the bad ones.

1:39:41:00

Phillip in apartment watching CNN on his phone.

CNN News Anchor / Rose Hamid

Anchor: 56 year old Rose Hamid, was escorted out and booed by the crowd as you see right there, she spoke with us about her experience and the people around her in the rally.

Rose: Ya know I don’t know if he really knows what Muslims stand for. So that was really my goal to let people see that Muslims aren’t that scary.

As soon as I find my family, I’m going to star the process, to follow up and to get it. But at the time being, I can’t concentrate. Because…everywhere.. in the form there is, to fill out about your family…

It was at 2AM, I thought it was just a junk email like every single day, the first thing on the screen says like US embassy, I went to work and a couple of my coworker they were like always tracking my case, always asking me wants going on, so I turn on my phone and show her the email. Yes, my family got their Visa. I’m still dreaming, but I hope that this dream come true when I hug them, when they are here. 7 days after my family comes here, 7 days! 7 days!

“Phillip”

I’m looking for a house but, theres like kind of a religion problem, racist problem. I don't know man. One of the people who I called, she asked me what’s your name sir, I told her my name Khalid Awda, she said where are you from? I’m from middle east, which part of middle east. I’m from Baghdad, she said uh I’m sorry, I can’t. I said what do you mean? She said, I can’t show you the house. Finally I found a lady, she’s so nice, and I will sign the lease after tomorrow. I’m planning to make a huge speech with  my kids when they come here, explain for them theres lot of ignorant people like everywhere, so just to prepare you hear something, hurt your feeling, make a disappointment, it’s not the end of the world.

From this day forward it’s going to be only America First, America First. I’m establishing new vetting measure to keep radical Islamic terrorists out of the United States of America.

The latter order temporarily halts the flow of refugees into the United States and stops all entry from some predominately Muslim nations. This isn’t specifically singling out people with extremists ties, this is a blanket ban.

Malik

I was on the bus. I checked my case online. The minute I saw it said, “Issued,” I was like, “oh shit, now!” Man, I was not able to explain how happy I was. People kept saying that there’s a Muslim ban…I was at a loss what to do. Even though we had a visa. One of the news channels, they asked, “Why are they not going to add Afghanistan?”

Once a country decides to enter another country by force, to change its government, to change in some ways its culture, for it’s own foreign policy, national security reasons, it takes on a responsibly more awesome than the politicians and the ordinary people of our country can fathom. These interpreters are just the nearest example of the full load we’ve taken on, and yet it’s done without thought and it’s shrugged off without thought, they need us to be better than we are. And some of them seem to believe in our mission more than we did.

All I hope for them is to get out, I don’t imagine they're going to stay and build the new Afghanistan or the new Iraq, it’s too late for them. They need to get somewhere safe.
