MANY ON THE STREETS SUFFER

MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES OR ADDICTION.

ALREADY VULNERABLE, SOME DON’T EVEN KNOW ABOUT THE VIRUS AND IF THEY DO, THEY CAN’T ACCESS EVEN THE MOST BASIC HEALTHCARE.

ANDY MASTER IV

Andy (00:56:13): Many have been overwhelmed by years on the streets. Many are so sick because of years on the streets. The children that we get have often dropped two or three grades behind because of not having a home of their own. The moms have been abused over and over, uh, mistreated. Women who come in here have been, I, I feel like they've, they've had their souls harmed by the way that they've been treated on the streets.

00:54:02/ We have single men who've been overcome by an addiction of some sort or difficulties in life of some sort. We had yesterday, we had a young guy, he looked like my son. He was 25. He walked in, he nearly overdosed on meth five days ago and he was just still detoxing from meth and we accepted him in.

BRIANNA I'm working all day, just keep my mind off of it. 01.05.20 So I work more hours so that way I don't have to sit and ponder and think about, cause if I do then I'll be like, Oh my God, I'll start panicking.

BRIANNA (????) sanitary and keeping everything safe and clean is a must right about now. (01:22:31)

(01:21:40) There's someone that um, that does the make sure that people are washing their hands as a person wiping down door knobs. There's a person changing light bulbs or doing the blanket and the sheets or doing showers, washing the showers are doing the stairwell, making sure everything is sanitized.

ADDING TO THE STRESS OF DEALING WITH THE VIRUS IS THE FACT THE LARGE MAJORITY HERE, LIKE BRIANNA, HAVE ALSO ESCAPED VIOLENCE AND ABUSE.

Brianna (01:09:45):…/ the relationship lasted for four years and towards the end it was just like something had to give and it was either I was going to die. Well, I felt like I was gonna die or I had to leave.

There's people that lost hope, lost their way, and there's women that's in, that's around that just, they seem like they don't care.Brianna (01:12:23):They just angry at the world.

01:06:23 brianna/ what brought me here ?..../I was in a relationship that went bad, it turned violent so I moved out of the household and had nowhere to go  /

(01:12:23):So for me, going from an abuse relationship and being able to get out of it, and still say that I'm here is a blessing.

Brianna (01:13:57): I’m happy I found this place too because Lord knows that I needed the help.

SO FAR… THIS PANDEMIC HAS HAD ONLY A MINOR IMPACT ON THE PEOPLE HERE, WITH MORE RESTRICTIONS AND A CHANGED ROUTINE.

BUT THE FACT ANDY’S WELCOMING THE SICK ALONGSIDE THE HEALTHY HAS ATTRACTED CRITICISM.

D1C1 ANDY/ 01.16.46 We have activists who aren't thinking clearly, who believed that, uh, getting people inside is going to be the cause of their death. Their calling missions death traps and things like that. But they're not, you know, that the missions are not a death trap. They're life savers.

(01:03:12): They're, they're lifesavers. I'm not kidding when I say that. They, they absolutely are lifesavers.

ANDY MAST IV FULL SCREEN

ANDY, LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD, IS LEARNING THAT FACING A PANDEMIC BRINGS IMMENSE ANXIETY AND STRESS.

DAY 3 CARD 1 THOUGHT TRACK

Andy 01:12:05, There's an intense pressure. I would say the first nine days I had this deep, deep ache in my chest and I wondered if it was a Coronavirus or if it was a heart attack, which I've had in the past. It feels like an elephant on your chest. But my wife who is a nurse assured me that, no, Andy, that's the, I've got it too. That's the stress of the situation. I'm starting to feel it even as I, uh, even as I talk about it, it's the stress that's constantly on my chest.

SKYPE CALL

POND 5 DRONE SHOT OF LA/ SUNSET

AT THE END OF A 15 HOUR DAY, ANDY FINALLY HEADS HOME. BUT HE’S NOT THE ONLY ONE PUTTING IN LONG HOURS.

VIA SKYPE, WE MEET HIS WIFE BONNIE

Andy (00:32:43):So right now we just come usually home and, and catch a little news or TV and there's our, there's our fake a fireplace.

Jacki (00:32:52):

Oh, it's a fake fire. That's a nice fake fireplace.

BONNIE IS ALSO DEALING WITH THE FALLOUT FROM THE PANDEMIC - WORKING AS A NURSE IN A CORONAVIRUS EMERGENCY WARD.

Bonnie (00:27:25): Yeah, well we, all the nurses are wearing the PPE. So we, uh, have all the gowns, the gloves, the masks, the face shields, hair nets, booties on our feet. So we basically the limit the amount of time that we spend per room with patients.

Andy (00:29:15):  I've kind of, I'm more concerned about Bonnie than me because she's right in the thick of it.

09;30 And Bonnie are you worried about Andy?

Bonnie (00:30:04):

yeah, I do worry about him. Um, but I know him and he's not gonna stay at home. He used those, you know, that kind of guy that's just going to be there on the front line too.

09;59

and what do you children and grandchildren think about what you do?

Andy (00:30:31):

they uh, they would rather we didn't.

Jacki (00:30:34):

They said that?

Andy (00:30:36):

Oh yeah. We're worry about trying to think of all of them, but I think pretty much all of them are concerned. And they don't invite us over right now.

Bonnie (00:30:49):

We're social distancing away from family.

Andy (00:30:51):

physical distancing you learn today. I guess they changed it to physical distancing

ADD ANDY MASTER IV

NOW UNABLE TO SEE HIS OWN FAMILY, ANDY STILL BELIEVES IT’S A SMALL PRICE TO PAY.

ANDY 23.38 I used to look through people who were homeless, digging out of a dumpster and not feel any of their pain. They were invisible to me. I didn't even, I didn't even sense a feeling of empathy. I looked right through them. And / now I am haunted by the thought of one human being being left on our streets.

Imagine living in a city with 44,000 people left on the streets, and you're haunted by the thought of one person being left on the streets. Haunted by the thought of one woman dressing up like a man, hoping to be a avoid being raped tonight. And knowing that three to four people who are left on the streets are dying each day. Uh, I'm haunted by that and I won't stop until our city addresses that or, or I'm no longer here. (24:50)
