Wuhan Horizon script:

SPIP

We start where it all started. Namely, in the Chinese city, Wuhan.

Officially China has 4643 deaths, of which 3869 are in Wuhan - a city with 11 million inhabitants. Compared to the death rates of many other countries, China is relatively low, and it has sparked debate about whether they are genuine. DR is the only Danish media to have visited Wuhan after virus outbreaks, and our correspondent Philip Khokhar takes us now in this totally unique reportage of Wuhan, where relatives still struggling to for the recognition of their family members died as a result of corona.

SPEAK

(music - airplane - airport - I register at Wuhan airport)

I'm on my way to Wuhan to learn more about what happened in January.

SB: Show your green code

After months of travel restrictions, it is now possible to travel without too many problems.

(music)

There are 11 million living in Wuhan. But the roads into the centre is almost empty in the city one whose name around the world got to know in January.

SB: news-speak Wuhan; English and

Chinese:

0'42

Many places in Hubei province, including Wuhan, have got corona virus infected cases.

But on the skyscrapers along the Yangtze River there are now light shows about,

how China thinks the country defeated Corona.

(Drone pictures with music, countdown)

Case 1:

We drive out of town to meet with someone who lost his father in January.

Since Liu Peien's father died, he has spoken openly about it on social media. Subsequently, he has been approached by police and authorities nine times.

That's why we meet him in a parking lot. His father was in the hospital for health checks in January - since he was probably infected with corona.

Sync; When my father did his body check, we got all the information about the corona virus from media, from our official news. The official news said at that time that there is no evidence to show that it will not be transmitted from people to people. 17s

Sb: " Take a rest"

Three weeks (29.jan) later says doctors son Liu Pei ' one that he should contact the undertaker.

C10: The doctor said he couldn't be saved. No need to rescue. He said it will be so painful for him. And then he said, "L a me help you a Message the funeral parlour. 13s

YouTube clip: “He sufficed to death, couldn't breath, misery. It's a pain for ever in my heart.

Today, his father's death still does not count as a corona case, although he had all symptoms and died of oxygen deficiency after a few weeks of illness.

(Something the next syncs must picture is covered, but the music eventually)

C12: Until now I don't have my father's Cov-19 report. Because there is different confirmation standard, he was not defined a corona case. 12s

C11: It was not allowed to be corona virus., 3s

Fishmarket

(pictures of me going against the market)

The first case of corona virus is found among people who had been to the Huanan Seafood market. E t fish market in Wuhan, where wild animals are also sold. The outbreak is probably started by infection from an animal to a human.

Sync, where I hope and speak, Sync about sweet smells + guards come:

- Sorry, it's not allowed to film here.

- Philip: We are from Danish TV.

- I know, but now it's not allowed to film here.

- Why not?

- Because now this place still needs to be disinfected every day.

Background:

The 31st December, China warns the WHO of a new unknown virus.

4'25

People should understand why we did not disclose information timely.

But authorities maintain that the spread between humans is unlikely.

First 20 January notify you officially that the virus infects human to human. T re days later, Wuhan shut down.

The site has leaked documents showing that both the authorities in Wuhan and the Beijing Government knew the truth - at least during part of the period - without the informing public.

4'58

If we lock down, we may stop the disease, but we will leave a bad reputation in history.

Music or soundbite

The responsibility will later be placed with local leaders. But quite unusual for China, Wuhan's mayor has said on television that he actually knew that the virus was spreading between people, but that the Beijing government did not give him permission to tell it.

Zhou Xianwang / Mayor, Wuhan

5'20

As a local government official, I could disclose the information only after being authorized.

Meanwhile, five million Wuhan residents are on holiday - inside and outside China in connection with the Chinese New Year

Music .. general pictures, small break

Case 2:

Another Wuhan citizen who never forgets the virus outbreak is Ding Yingjun.

I meet him in his taxi as he is afraid, that the police will interrupt our interview.

sb

He hears the first time about the virus in early January , when a passenger who work s in a hospital , warns him:

A2 : One passenger reminded me, he said , "Sir , you should have a mask on when you work. "He said the virus was very serious. Like SARS. 10s

Ding Yingjun tells his mother Hu Aizhen about the virus. But she does not take it seriously, as the TV news controlled by the authorities reports that viruses do not transmit between people.

"Let's focus on the news about Wuhan's unknown virus"

A4 : T here were some officials from the health commission saying that this virus was not infected from people to people, it could be prevented and controlled. They said in TV news .

A few weeks later, her mother is ill. But now Wuhan's health care system has already collapsed, as we look at the pictures Ding Yingjun records while struggling to find one hospital bed.

A6: Can you imagine what the doctor said to me? I asked him, "Can you arrange for my mother to breathe some oxygen?" He just poi n ted at one bed saying, “After the dead body is moved away, your mother can sleep in that bed. She can breathe oxygen there. “My mother was scared and run out immediately. 18s

Hu Aizhen is being tested for corona. The result shows that she is negative, but at the same time the staff does not exclude that she can be positive.

In another hospital, doctors believe the mother's first test is false.

A9: The doctor asked my mother if she had done the Covid-19 test. I said she did at the Xinhua hospital. He said, "You have two make a new test, that one is fake.”, 7s

(Video just before she dies.)

Hu Aizhen 's health deteriorated fierce t and 8 February dies she.

Here, Ding Yingjung is busy shortly before

(soundbite, can you translate what he says?)

A7: At the moment when she died, her mind was very clear. She told me she was thirsty about half a minute before she died.

We continue the interview with Ding Yingjung at a restaurant in a secluded room.

Philip for camera at restaurant.

Four times he has been in talks with the police and local authorities, demanding that he criticize him.

A20: At her very last moment I believe she had the same feeling as I have. Sad and angry. Why? Because she was so innocent. She must regret because I warned her but she didn't listen to me. All because she watched the goddamn news. 26s

Li  Wenliang

F actively warns several doctors in Wuhan against the new virus in late 2019.

Including the 33rd year of Li Wenliang. On China's answer to Facebook, WeChat, writes he in a closed group , to a SARS equal n end virus is returned. Few days later, he was forced by police to sign a statement on that he had spread false rumours.

Study host: The 8 people who spread the rumours got punished).

Still, he continues to warn the public. Among other things, in interviews with foreign media.

In early February, Li Wenliang himself died of corona virus at this hospital in Wuhan.

He leaves behind a pregnant wife, son, and China in shock. ...

Stand up hospital, 42 sec

Phillip to camera: " Today, the Communist Party and the authorities say he was a martyr. That he did it completely right.

(Man, enough doctor interrupts)

Chinese: with you?

Did you contact the propaganda office?

Philip: Of course, of course

Chinese: Please go outside of the plaza.

Kip out while I have my back to the camera)

We have tried several times to get interviews with the authorities in Wuhan. But they have never returned to our inquiries.

On the other hand, doctor Liao Haolei from one of the city's hospitals wants to talk to us . He blames the province's then political leaders, who were later removed by President Xi.

B4: Many people died. And the funeral parlour was also very busy. These things happened. But there is nothing reported on the official newspaper. We thought it was so strange. We knew these officials would go down.

18s

He says that doctors in Wuhan knew that the virus infected the people, but s authorities claimed the opposite.

B7

We all know clearly that it will be transmitted from people to people, but our status is too low to speak it out. We need the big guy to speak it out.

11

(Maybe general Wuhan pictures )

Liao Haolei is surprisingly open-minded in a city where most would not otherwise speak to foreign journalists. But he also praises the efforts of the government. He explains the limited death toll in Wuhan with the help of the rest of China.

B6: They helped Wuhan a lot. Wuhan people will never forget them. Hubei province will not forget them.

14s

(by pictures + music)

Many of the people I speak to in Wuhan are skeptical of the official death toll.
The same goes for Ding Yingjun, who lost his mother

(Maybe in black? Music , car queue, slow pictures)

Two months later he was allowed to her mother's urn. Each family was told that they only had to come to the crematorium in one car per deceased. Ding Yingjun occupies the car queue for that.

A11: When I came out, I took a video. It was traffic jam. The traffic jam was really far away. I was thinking that why so many people died. My heart was so painful.

(photo deck this one)

A13: I was thinking that the official death number is only several thousand. If it was true, how can the queue be so long? 6s

Case 1

Liu Peien, who lost his father back in January, also doubts the official death toll of just under 4,000 in Wuhan. Partly because of his experiences in the burial ground where his father's urn is set.

C16: When we went to the cemetery, there were a lot of people. They employee said, "We are so busy. Including the constructors, we only have about 100 people. We are too busy to bury 20 to 30 thousand bodies.”, 19s

Clips from YouTube: People are not allowed to give interviews. They hide information.

Since Liu Pei's father died , he has spoken openly about it on social media, which has caused him major problems with the police and the municipality.

Police officer: " You're not going to say a word online in the coming month."

C15 : I was told not to spread negative energy online. Secondly not used by foreign hostile forces.

12s

Despite the warnings, Liu Pei says he wants to stay.

C14 : I am a family victim. My father passed away and what I tell is all truth. I didn't lie. I am never against the country. I am never against the party. I am not against anybody. I just told the truth.
