This is salty water to maintain the temperature so the ice form.

It’s more eco-friendly than other refrigeration methods

Ammonia circles in salty water

Due to circulation, the temperature goes down

The temperature reads -7C.

After filling the cans with water, we preserve it in that salty water for 24 hours

And the temperature of the cans

Normal water becomes zero and it starts freezing.

After 24 hours the ice is ready to be distributed.

And sometimes, it can be erratic over cooling in some certain locations. But generally, heating up of the planet. And we hear each year you know since 2001 or so, each year has been a record-breaking err hot year since we remember.

o that’s when I started looking at the bigger problem.

Elsewhere in India, another team is also using ice

to counter heat and drought  - on a giant scale.

Leh is nearly 2,000km north of Ahmedabad and at a height of 3,500 metres.  Winter temperatures can fall to -30C.'

Earlier in the year, a team here solved problems of heat and drought ahead of time with ice - on a giant scale.

We hear each year you know since 2001 or so, each year has been a record-breaking err hot year since we remember.

06:49:22

so that’s when I started looking at the bigger problem.

07:53:53

So, ice stupas are a technique of making these large cones that could be 10 to 12 storeys tall, could hold some 10 million litres err of water in the winter. And then because of its geomatic shape, it doesn’t melt till June/May. And when it melts, in those months, it releases the water slowly, so that trees could be planted in deserts or it augments the flow of streams, so that farmers get a little more water in the crisis period.

07:54:32

Caption: Sonam Wangchuk

Environmentalist

The simple principle of science says that water maintains its level.  So upstream where we put the pipe, and downstream where we put the ice cone, the water wants to go to the same level, so it goes up and there’s pressure, so it throws wter into the minus 20 winter sky, so then it freezes into a cone of ice.

I did not know that climate change was a thing

But I had an inkling when I realized that it is always hot

Even during the winter and monsoon months

I gradually started understanding the issue

And the involved myself with the project

I started visiting slum areas

And spreading the message among women

Initially, the women would say that all this is God’s doing

I told them how was it before?

Did you sleep outside?

They replied that the trees have been cut down

So there is no breeze

They replied that there is no breeze because the trees have been cut down.

The road was to be made broader by felling the trees at the sides

Then I would say that this is not God’s doing

This is our own human doing

New caption; Shaqeela has ordered white paint for her house, and Krishna is now delivering it.

Some environmentalists are calling for us all to use simple measures to cool -  and reduce global heating.

06:49:22

Our glaciers are melting, not just because of our actions. It is to do with the big cities of the world, erm New York, New Delhi, Beijing, Paris.

Most of the Himalyan glaciers are affected by the fast melting of glaciers, it is said that already we have lost 15 percent of our glaciers in the last ten years or so.

By the end of the century, 70 percent of the glaciers will be gone.
