The BBC has obtained secret recordings of phone calls we believe to have been made by the president to some of his closest advisors.

BEN ALI’S FLIGHT ARRIVES INTO JEDDAH

Just after midnight, president Ben Ali’s plane lands in Jeddah.

بعد منتصف الليل بقليل، تحط طائرة الرئيس بن علي في جدة.

He orders the pilot to prepare for their return trip and he and his family are escorted to the King Faisal Palace Guest House.

يأمر قائد الطائرة بالتحضير لرحلة عودتهما، وتتم مرافقته مع عائلته إلى مقر الضيافة في قصر الملك فيصل.

But the pilot disobeys. He abandons president Ben Ali and flies back to Tunisia.

لكن قائد الطائرة يعصي الأوامر، ويتخلى عن الرئيس بن علي ويطير عائدا إلى تونس.
