Billing:
In exclusive, never
heard before recordings believed to be of former Tunisian president Zine
al-Abidine Ben Ali, BBC News Arabic reveals the anxious telephone calls that
helped seal the fate of his 23 year dictatorship and
spark a wave of revolutions across the Middle East. The recordings, which are
strongly disputed by some, appear to show that, as protests rocked his feared
police state, the president’s closest aides urged him to stay away from the
country.

President: Why?
P1: There’s anger on
the streets in a way that I cannot describe. So that you cannot say that I
misled you and the decision is yours. ش1:
President: But things
are calming down, apparently?
Ridha: That was
earlier, now there are announcements on Facebook and
we expect a day of serious events. ش1:
President: No, not at
all.
Ridha: I’m
telling you and the decision is yours. I can offer you
protection to the palace, but I don’t know about the street, I tell you, Mr
President. ش1:
President: What have I
done to the street? I served it.
Ridha: Mr
President, I’m giving you the situation, not an explanation - the objective
situation and you explain it the way you see fit. That’s all. ش1:
