02:23:29:18 What we do is measure the area of the forest they occupy. From that, we estimate the number of butterflies arriving in Mexico.

(02:22:00:14 ) It’s not actually a count of individuals but of the area the butterflies occupy.

//

02:06:17:22 That’s what we’re trying to find out.

//

02:07:01:11 It’s concerning if large numbers of butterflies die of natural causes because that may be related to lack of food. (02:07:11:24) either when it was a larva or it didn’t find enough… resources to feed itself during it’s journey. (02:07:23:00, So It could become alarming. (02:07:25:12)

CESAR SIT DOWN MASTER IV

+ CAL REVERSALS

*SUBREEL 1

CESAR AND HIS TEAM MUST COUNT EVERY 15 DAYS FOR REST OF THE SEASON.

If the migration collapses. Cesar says there’ll be impacts right across the food chain from Mexico – to the United States and Canada.

(03:35:49:01) 75% of the food people consume depends on the services of pollinators. (03:35:56:17)

//

(03:33:53:14 -). I don't know if you can imagine millions of Monarchs flying through different ecosystems, (03:34:09:01) Doing this pollination job is a huge army.

(03:31:30:17) So it's not just an urgent call to save the monarch butterfly because it’s a pretty sight, but because of the ecological implications, which for human beings would be devastating.

According to WWF, more than 2000 hectares of forest in the core of the butterfly reserve have been affected by illegal logging.

Homero’s father – Homero Gomez Gonzalez - was a local butterfly defender and once managed the sanctuary.

03:35:56 – ILLEGAL LOGGER- Up to now, a bit. In a certain way, yes. It’s because at the moment they’re selling the land to get avocado farmers in. 03:36:10

CALLI: SO BY CUTTING THESE TREES THEN THEY CAN MAKE AVOCADO  PLANTATIONS? THAT’S THE ULTIMATE GOAL?
03: 36: 46 – ILLEGAL LOGGER- Yes. Yes, that’s the idea they bring in. They want to expand. Here, and in a nearby community they’ve bought a lot of forested land. They want to get full involved here.

And the ideology we have is to leave something for our children and grandchildren.
