When I say I am a footballer, they shockingly say
“woman footballer”. “ Can women play football?” After facing so much
struggle, played 27 times for Kerala, played for India, still I face
questions like these everyday |

When I tell people I coach boys, they doubt my
capacity to do that Is it because of my size or because I am a woman? |

I have also built a women’s team. Hey Amija Ten of my girls have got selected to Kerala state
team. But it’s not easy to coach girls in India. When kids are born, why do we give football to boys
and dolls to girls? This makes girls soft and timid. There are many to coach boys but a few take serious
efforts to coach girls. |

When I talk about my struggles, people say it
happens to everybody But my hardships are important to me I was in grade six when my mother died. In those circumstances, I had to work as
domestic help. I would eat stale food and walk long
distances to be able to study. Football didn't happen to me by learning it from a
coach or by watching it on TV. Truly, I started playing to get rid of hunger.
One day, I was sitting home and there
was nothing for me to eat as usual. Some boys were playing outside. I was
amazed to see the game of football. I thought to myself what if I could play? But they
were all men. Even for watching, I was the only woman there. One day their
goalkeeper was absent. I didn't know what a goalkeeper does. I just went in
to volunteer. I got badly hit on my chest and I fell. I thought it’s better
not to play because here one has to suffer hunger as well as hits. I stayed
at home for two days. But then I felt Ill try again. When I understood
football is a game of legs, I started playing all the time to forget about
hunger. Nothing can replace the happiness I feel when I play You go to the other side and repeat what he does Understood? |

I got a blazer and a pair of new trousers. New white shirt and a red tie. After seeing myself in the mirror at the New Delhi
airport I wondered, am I this beautiful? This was the first time I was wearing such good
clothes |

I used to live in a small house with roof made of
coconut leaves. I had to place dishes on the floor when it would rain. I
would run out of dishes but roof would still leak |

I saw everyone exchanging currency at the new Delhi
airport. I also joined them. The officer at the counter asked me if I need more
money that what I had asked for? I answered, “No sir. I need this much only”. I asked other girls how much they exchanged. They
said “around USD 500, 400.” I had exchanged USD 2 |
00:00:07:19- 00:00:07:38 00:00:07:40- 00:00:07:50 |

That was my situation when I played in Germany but
there I was awarded with money and a pair of shoes. The first thing I did
with that prize money was fixed that roof. The feeling of sleeping in my
house that day is beyond explainable words. Thinking of what I have achieved today from almost
nothing it gives me pangs of fear, wondering was it really me who
suffered all that. |

Take Take On the outside, I come across
as a confident Sina but, Inside, I am scared. I fear getting close to or talk to men Like everyone else even I had a desire to get
married and have a family but the memories of my father wouldn't let me
because he was cruel to my mother and enjoyed it |

He used to lock up me and my sister in bedroom and
used to tie up our mother and assault her cruelly. I’ve seen him breaking
alcohol bottles and rubbing broken glass on mom’s body. On various parts of her body, letting her bleed Can any human be this cruel? One evening he came home holding hands of another
woman. I was lying on my mom’s hand. Her tears trickled down my cheek. When I
grew up, then I realised why that woman cried so much. It was blood oozing
out of her broken heart. |

If you get a proposal now, will you get married? No sir. I don’t have any life left to experiment with. My only desire is to die while I am playing on the

If I’ll have a girl child, I’ll be in constant fear

clothing why don’t you? She replied “That’s how it has always been. We were banned from covering our upper bodies” |

He said, “My kids, I’ll have to place this plowshare to your necks” and father did so |

I asked him, “father why are you doing this to us?” He said, “My dear kid. You will have to suffer like
we did” |
00:00:15:05- 00:00:15:14 |

It was 5 to 6 acres of land and we kept plowing like cattles Following my dad who was walking ahead |

If we didn’t sow seeds, the landlord would get angry we faced a lot of problems rice was given to us as wage This slavery happened because my ancestors knew no

How much ever sad we are or face tragedies,
experience poverty whatever it is The desire is to live. Always. Nobody wants to die I never felt like I should die After my husband’s death, I didn't want to end up as

I’ve been doing this for twelve years I was scared for the first time but t got over in two and a half hours Usually this is not done by women But, I do it all by myself I have no qualms working at nights Till date, I’ve cremated more than 3000 dead bodies |
00:00:18:08- 00:00:18:15 |
|
I get only a little money by doing this job I don't do this only for money |
00:00:18:20-00:00:18:22 |
|
Our ancestors considered it as a good deed |
00:00:18:30- 00:00:18:33 |
|
I am really attached to this crematorium |
00:00:18:35- 00:00:18:45 00:00:18:50- 00:00:18:54 |
|
I believe these souls are with me When I feel sad, I come here and all them the
reasons of my worries Then I feel relieved after doing so |
00:00:19:00-00:00:19:03 00:00:19:07- 00:00:19:10 |
|
Want to see the face for the last time? I am going
to cover it The one going to set fire should stay, others please
go out |
00:00:19:16- 00:00:19:21 00:00:19:27- 00:00:19:29 00:00:19:37- 00:00:19:44 |
|
I have no memory of my mother as she died when I was
two My father never loved me When I see children breaking down due to the loss of
their parents, I feel sad Though, I never faced this in my life |
00:00:19:56- 00:00:20:12 |
|
From 2nd to 7th standard, I was kept in an orphanage I had suffered a lot there Though I had brothers, none came to visit me Seeing relatives coming to visit other kids, I
always felt lonely |
00:00:20:37- 00:00:20:45 |
|
Usually, a healthy body will take two and half hours This a is sick person’s body, Hence, will take five
hours |
00:00:20:47- 00:00:20:55 |
|
Legs are done They burn first, usually Hands |
00:00:20:59- 00:00:21:01 |
|
Due to high temperature, they rise up |
00:00:21:11- 00:00:21:19 |
|
Sometimes some parts swell up and squirt a fluid So I have to be careful because it can burn my body |
00:00:21:23- 00:00:21:35 |
|
If the body arrives at night, I work till dawn I keep adding wood after every half hour The body needs to be turned. Just the wood won’t
help |
00:00:21:38- 00:00:21:50 00:00:21:53- 00:00:21:56 |
|
If it’s an old person’s body, it curls up like a chair If I try to settle it down, it bounces back If I put wood on upper side, legs rise up Some will sit up as if they are looking at me These souls take time to detach from this world |
00:00:22:02- 00:00:22:11 |
|
Have you ever had a fierce experience here? What fear? I fear those walking on two legs, nothing else. |
00:00:22:23- 00:00:22:27 00:00:22:29- 00:00:22:33 00:00:22:37- 00:00:22:56 00:00:23:00- 00:00:23:08 |
|
I suffered a lot with my husband He never beat up the kids He would only beat me up, scaring them He broke my hand with a broom. My elbow was broken. He didn’t take me to a hospital A traditional healer placed a stick of wood with my
hand and wrapped it with medicines I had to fetch water from well with one hand He picked me up, threw me on the floor and broke my
back. damaged my ear drums I don’t have teeth here as he broke them too |
00:00:23:10- 00:00:23:16 00:00:23:20- 00:00:23:30 00:00:23:33- 00:00:23:37 00:00:23:40- 00:00:23:52 00:00:23:54- 00:00:23:57 |
|
When I found a job, he stopped going to work I had to give him money for alcohol If I was late from work, he would speak ill of my
character He would suspect that I had gone out with another
man I didn't want him anymore as I ran out of patience I took a stand and told him to leave forever Both my daughters are educated I made sure they completed their degrees even after
they got married. Now I am not scared to come back home Earlier it was frightening to come home |
00:00:24:21-00:00:24:24 00:00:24:26- 00:00:24:28 |
|
This is the skull it hasn't broken yet Oh its broken |
00:00:24:34- 00:00:24:44 |
|
Chest and stomach are still left This part of the body must be infected, that’s why
it’s taking longer |
00:00:24:48- 00:00:25:01 |
|
I have told everyone including the priest of my
church and to my kids cremate me here after my death After cremating so many bodies, I don't want to end
up in a ditch |
00:00:25:06- 00:00:25:10 |
|
It’s better to turn to ashes than worms eating you
up |
00:00:25:14-00:00:25:40 |
|
As you are a Christian, does the church allow you to
do this job? It is to the church that feeds me. so, who are they
to question me? |
|
|
I have seen poverty-ridden life Those days me and my kids used to struggle for a
single meal We had no clothes and food Now I can buy food. Now I earn |
00:00:25:42- 00:00:25:48 |
|
The church never helped me when I and my kids needed
the most |
00:00:25:49-00:00:25:54 |
|
They should care about if I visit the church or not I am doing my work |
