Abeshouse Do you see a connection between DeSantis’ Stop WOKE Act and Viktor Orban’s strategies?

Beauchamp Yes, Both of them are attempting to seize control of our educational systems. This is in part because education is the space in which citizens are acculturated, you know, we learn ideas or what it means to be a good citizen. On a deeper level it’s the professors and the schoolteachers who are  a really potent reservoir of liberal cultural power and influence and they need to be squashed or brought to heel.

Spar With this bill and the idea that one individual could say, I have a concern with the way something's being taught, and if you don't stop, I'm going to sue you, is quite concerning to us in the education field, and teachers across this state.

Abeshouse Think the Stop WOKE Act is preventing kids from learning about the true history of the country. And it’s an attempt to whitewash the history.

Justice There's a difference between teaching the real history of our country//and teaching divisive, toxic ideology, that's meant to divide children and make them feel hopeless about a future in America

Abeshouse A lot of people feel that the agenda that you’re pushing, in terms of elevating LGBTQ issues is marginalizing the group. If you look at authoritarian regimes they commonly target LGBTQ folks to propel their agenda.

Justice Is this the part where I got to remind you, you work for Al Jazeera?

Abeshouse Sure. Orban, I mean, Victor Orban talks about it. There are situations where there’s been an elevation in violence.

Justice Here, let me stop you right now. We are not anti-LGBTQ. But the media, and the President of the United States, the Biden administration they do not like Ron DeSantis. They do not like the stance that he’s taking, and it’s become political. They want to divide the country. Again, divide the country.

Jones They don’t want their children learning about the changing of America. They just don’t. And America’s changing

Jones Yes and they don’t even know where it’s originated from. The whole stay woke was a terminology that was telling people to stay alert of what’s happening around you. It was after the constant death of Black men by the hands of police officers. And so, for the governor to counteract that with Stop the WOKE Act is racist, and I will continue to say at it’s core it is racist

Abeshouse Some people talk about Florida as the laboratory of authoritarianism. Do you think that’s an apt description?

Beauchamp There’s really something to that. You know,especially in state control over education, social views and expression. And DeSantis has implemented a variety of//Orban style, culture war, authoritarian tactics//

BUT IT’S NOT JUST IN FLORIDA. ACROSS THE COUNTRY, DEMOCRATIC EFFORTS TO COUNTER REPUBLICAN CULTURE WAR TACTICS ARE CRITICAL IN THE FIGHT AGAINST AUTHORITARIANISM. Greenberg Yeah,I mean Vance adopted Trump’s whole vision. And I think Ryan’s vision really is the hope for Democrats thinking about the next presidential election. Because he is forthright in battling for working people. He articulates their discontent. He’s angry about it, and that’s what working people need to see.

Ryan You guy’s are like the future of Ohio. So, we are counting on you ok.

Ryan Go meet with them. We’ve been in all 88 – all 88 counties. Talk about the issues that are important to them, jobs, wages, pensions, benefits, their kids//rebuilding our communities, infrastructure  these are things we should be able to agree about these are all American things.

Liles Those are polarizing topics that immediately pull you one way or another. It’s a strategy to take people who are in the middle and leaning to the right to pull them all the way to the right.

Abeshouse When I was driving down here, I saw a few signs on the side of the road. It said, Joe Biden’s, you know, infrastructure bill provided 500 thousand jobs. Do the Democrats get any credit for that in terms of the economy down here?

Liles I think at the end of the day, really, what we have is like, is one party, and it’s rich people. So ah, I think a lot of the people are critical of the president no matter what

Greenberg Well, it’s only because the Democrats aren’t advancing an economic message that actually addresses the loss of income and wealth combined with the inequality at the top, the billionaire’s impact and control over government

Abeshouse But the Republican message is about wokeism, is about immigration, about LGBTQ rights. They seem to be trumping the economic message now.

Greenberg You’re going to solve it by giving working families the kind of support they need. And they are looking for that. They’re very open to a larger governmental role in healthcare, income support. People, Biden voters, Trump voters, embrace that. And they believe that if you can check the billionaires power and provide the kind of support for working families, it can be different.

Beard guy I don’t know. I think they’ve got their work cut out for them, at least in industrialized areas like Ohio,

Abeshouse Do you think that white folks are as discriminated against as African Americans?

Beard guyI think they are. I mean, it’s – it’s in different ways, I guess, but I mean, you know//a white male has less chance of – of getting a job you know, in certain situations

Abeshouse Do you feel that Trump stood up for Christianity, that Christianity is under siege in America right now?

Beard guy I do. I mean, it’s been – been under siege for years, but //that that has really exploded maybe in the last five to ten years.

Jewelry maker Well, unfortunately we’re in an area where there's still some closemindedness and I believe that there are a good amount of people that are okay with racial slurs and bigotry. And I honestly just think that it's all a mess and everyone just wants it their way and their way is the old way of let's just, you know, have people of color sitting in the back of the bus and like they – it's we’re going backwards.

Perry We found that the more white Americans subscribe to Christian Nationalist ideology the more they believe that they will be targeted and that Black Americans will not be targeted. In fact, Black Americans will be protected.

Abeshouse Do you think Ohio Senate candidate, J.D. Vance is trying to win votes by playing to the fears and policy preferences of white Christian Nationalists?

Perry So, J.D. Vance has actually unleashed the rhetoric of – of white Christian Nationalism and populist authoritarianism and has found it quite effective.

Vance ad bite:On the one hand, the elites and the ruling class are robbing us blind, and on the other hand if you dare complain about it you are a bad person

Perry He wants to stoke fear, anger, and perceptions that good people like us, white Christian Ohio Republican voters are under attack. We’re being called racist. We’re being called xenophobes because we want to build a wall to keep those people who are trying to replace us out.

Perry You’ve got a very, very motivated and militant and mobilized contingent of Americans who subscribe to Christian Nationalist ideology and they want to fight to preserve their power. And it's going to take a broad coalition of Americans who can put aside their differences long enough to say you know what the real threat right now is this radical right, neo-fascist, authoritarian regime that wants to take all of our rights, that wants to take our country in a direction that is anti-democratic. It is un-American.
