James (55:48): So first, when you enter the stage, you need to smile, half smile. So you're going to do this. And when you get to the spot where you can establish your posture and yourself, you need to do the smile with the teeth, that was the level two. And the last one is the level three smile, which is you're going to laugh.

DAY2 In situ – Darren speaks with UK and US |
02:07:24 UK – The big difference between modelling and pageantry is behaviour. Pageantry you are under the microscope throughout the entire pageant. Your behaviour, how you present yourself, even off camera, outside all the events is very important. 02:07:56 US - a lot of doors and opportunities open, even if you’re not a winner, but also those who are seen on a stage. |
29 |
DAY2 In situ – Darren speaks with UK and US |
02:08:37 US – it’s basically a reality show UK – yeah it’s a reality show |

DAY1 James sit down IV DAY1 00:48:46 James walks off stage to close out scene |
Darren (01:27:53): it's a lot of work that you're doing, you're basically putting your life on hold, on pause, to exercise, to diet. You can't eat what you want to eat.
James (01:28:00): Yeah, I even stop studying for it. Darren (01:28:02): So why? Why? Why Do you do it? James (01:11:57): Growing up was pretty hard because I was an obese kid. I was very, very fat. I've gone through mental health issues because of the body shaming and bullying too Darren (01:19:01): And is that motivation for you now to do all the work you do to stay fit and healthy? James (01:19:09): Yeah. Yeah, because I'm afraid to be fat again, unless it’s bulking.

Fashion of the world comp |
As he prepares for the fashion of the world category, he tells me he’s fighting another battle - racially biased notions of beauty
|
45d |
James in make-up chair In situ Qs |
James (01:35): So actually that is a real thing here in the Philippines because you have some of the organization of pageantries, different pageantries, they set in standards, especially height. It should be like six foot tall or maybe just like five 10 and also lighter skin. Darren: That’s quite tall for Filipinos James: Yeah, yeah….and have narrow nose as well. Good skin. Darren (02:08): Fair skin. James (02:08): Yeah. Fair skin.
So do you think, so that taller physique and narrower nose, fairer skin, it's kind of like a colonial beauty stand. would you agree?
|

Fashion of the world comp |
Pageants generate a lot of noise on social media platforms, but also from trolls
|
47 |
DAY1 James sit down IV |
THOUGHT TRACK James (01:33:10): To be honest, yeah, there's a lot of bashers in this world. Darren (01:33:40): What are they saying? James (01:34:07): I have big nose James (01:33:41):
Darren (01:34:02): Based on the color of your skin, or the darkness of your skin. James (01:34:03): Yeah, based on the color of your skin.
|
48 |
DAY2 Carlo sit down IV |
THOUGHT TRACK Carlo (51:45): Because we are colonized by Spanish, America and Japanese, so, I mean, for us, or for me, I think it's because of this influence. That's why if you see fair looking guys or something like that, that's how they see beauty… if you have a pointed nose, that's how they see you're beautiful. |

After that it’s all over. 01:50:28 It’s really simply a dream.

He’s afraid speaking with us will negatively impact his career
|
55 |
DAY6 Sit down IV |
02:04:36 D: So you were quite serious about being a pageant star? 01:15:11 P - I started out in the village level, then the regional, then national level

61 |
DAY6 Three-way consultation chat between doc, Darren and John in clinic room |
Paul (15:53): It's really tiring, Doc, you know the pain, the discomfort Darren (11:00): So was your goal to narrow your nose because in beauty pageants, a narrower nose, a more western looking nose, is somehow desirable? Paul - Yeah. Darren - Right. Paul - It is more likely to win because having a well-defined, straight nose is often considered an advantage in beauty pageants.
|
62 |
DAY6 Darren speaking with Doctor and John in consultation room |
00:19:25 D - the Philippines seems like a country that is really obsessed with beauty in many ways, where do you think the beauty pageant industry sits in that obsession? Doctor (19:38): Almost all the contestants, probably one way or another, had something done. They can had lipo, they can had facial reconstruction Darren (20:23): And what effect do you think this so-called perfection in pageantry has on the millions of people in the Philippines watching the pageants? Doctor (20:40): there is this subset of population that know, oh, they had something done, and I want that, I can save up money to get that. And that's opening up much more of the cosmetic surgery business. Darren (20:51): Sure. So it's feeding this desire for more surgery in a particular subset of pageant fans.
Darren (34:52): And one of the outcomes of that can be more botched surgeries. Doctor (34:57): Yes. There's a lot actually, a lot of botched surgeries.
|
63 |
DAY6 Inside John’s house, he raps a song he wrote 02:14:35 – 02:26:09 Run song underneath this segment |
Upsot john singing
Now Paul’s pageant days are over, he picks up work as
a singer
He’s left with the lingering memories of his operation – and what he alleges was an indecent proposal by the surgeon who had insisted Paul stay with him at his home after the surgery
00:27:36. He said I needed to live there and he would take care of my face 01:34:06
P : During the one week I was there
every time I’m already sleeping… he would lie next to me
and pretend he was dreaming but then he would touch my
private parts…01:34:19 So I confronted him and said
I’ll just pay him back for the surgery so I don’t have to be
subjected to that
02:06:54 D:Do you think that’s common in the industry?
01:38:07 P: In my experience, indecent proposals happen about 45 or 50 percent of the time. Paul alleges it’s part of a broader issue of cheating in the pageant industry 01:17:52 P:Cheating happens … if they can see a more handsome candidate, they’ll do it secretly, where they’ll get the phone number of that candidate and entice them to make them the winner or will find a spot for them, 01:18:19 so long as they agree with sexual favours, or something dirty, indecent proposal, something like that
01:45:49 I mean it’s quite terrifying

DAY7 Contestants wrapped in flags backstage – tense vibes here |
Tensions are running high as the moment when the winner is revealed inches closer….
But after hearing stories of body image pressure, botched surgeries and unethical behaviour I want to know if Carlo’s pageant is striving to be different.
|
67 |
DAY7 Carlo in foyer outside theatre Darren reversals |
Darren (03:11:43): REVERSAL So, there are reports of unethical behaviour and indecent proposals in some pageants in the Philippines. As someone who organizes a pageant, a major pageant, is this common? Carlo Morris Galang (03:09:34): I think not just today, but in the past years or something in the history, it will always be. Not just here, but I mean in the entertainment industry, not just in pageantry.
Darren (03:12:25): REVERSAL So who's ultimately responsible? Carlo Morris Galang (03:07:54): For me, it's the organizers itself. Darren (03:07:56): The individual organizers? Carlo Morris Galang (03:08:00): The individual organizers. Carlo Morris Galang (03:10:47): For me, it's just picking the right people or picking the right people from your organization
But Carlo says there are limits to his ability to protect contestants from unwanted advances
Carlo Morris Galang (03:10:04): What I'm telling to the candidates, yes I cannot guarantee that I can be your security …I can’t look after you the whole 24 hours. No, but it's up to you.
