These Hamas men carry the remains of the last fighter who fell on the front line in southern Lebanon. The Palestinian organization is fighting against Israel alongside Hezbollah on the border of the two countries. There are more than 250,000 Palestinian refugees living in Lebanon.

The procession heads to the martyrs' cemetery, in the heights of the city of Saida.

For armed groups like Hamas, the funeral is an opportunity to galvanize the crowd and gain support.

10:01:19:00 – 10:01:53:00

"We say goodbye to him, even though he died a martyr and the martyr is happy at God's side. What happiness and dignity to be close to God, he will be married to 72 virgins. »

"My God, help the mujahideen in Gaza to deal with Israeli tanks and soldiers. My God makes sure their soldiers are frightened. My God, bring down their planes, their tanks, and drown their ships. : »

A few kilometres from the border, this village is in ruins, emptied of its inhabitants.

Behind what remains of its walls, Hezbollah fighters are firing at Israel.

Stopping here is dangerous. The Israeli army is watching from the sky.

The roads are deserted and the incessant noise of drones means an imminent attack.

Local witnesses denounce Israel's use of white phosphorus missiles. A banned weapon whose presence alerted the United Nations.

A short walk from the border with Israel is the Christian village of Rmeish.

One of the only villages in the region still inhabited.

So far Rmeish has been spared, but missiles threaten.

For the locals, leaving or staying is a real dilemma.

Rony Choufani, resident of Rmeish 10:03:03:00 - 10:03:08:00

10:03:02:00 – 10:03:08:00

"It's injustice. We have nothing to do with what is happening, but there is absolutely nothing we can do. »

Fadl, the village grocer, is worried, customers are becoming increasingly rare.

Fadl Ghanatios, Rmeish trader 10:03:21:00 – 10:03:35:00

10:03:14:00 – 10:03:36:00

"We were very affected by the war because 60% of the villagers left. About 40% of the population remains. Our sales have gone down. What used to be sold in one day, is now sold in 15 days. »

For the time being, Israel is not targeting this village, because Hezbollah men are not present there.

Bahia Ghanem, inhabitant of Rmeish 10:03 :46 :00- 10 :03 :51 :00

"We don't have a place for Hezbollah but it comes at night, it circulates there."

"If Hezbollah goes backwards, there will be peace"

The inhabitants of the border villages of southern Lebanon are taking refuge further north. An area still untouched by the conflict, where they feel safe.

We go back up the road to meet a Lebanese family who had no choice but to flee the fighting.

Sawsane Abbas is a widow. She comes from a Muslim village on the border. Sawsane took refuge here in the village of Doueir with his parents and 2 children. The family had to leave the premises in a hurry because of the Israeli shelling.

ITW Saousan Abbas, internally displaced 10:04:56:00 – 10:05:09:00

10:04:54:00 – 10:05:29:00

"We spent a month going back and forth. When the massacre started, we left for good. The children were in a deplorable state. We couldn't get enough of this situation. »

"We had 2 rounds of bombings in 2 very close neighborhoods. I had my own hair salon, I lost 9 years of investment. »

10:05:36:00 – 10:05:49:00

"When I see these young Hezbollah fighters dying, I am not sad. I feel nothing but pride. If it wasn't for their sacrifice, we wouldn't be here today. »

In the absence of aid from the state and NGOs, the family was taken in by Hezbollah. A way for the organization to gain popularity. Maryam is in charge of humanitarian aid for the armed group.

Maryam Rammal, Hezbollah Humanitarian Officer 10:06:05:00 – 10:06:14:00

10:06:04:00 – 10:06:21:00

"Currently we have 130 families, we are working with the municipality, which provides us with the data... Hezbollah is also helping families by providing them with housing. We all work together, hand in hand. »

10:06:24:00 – 10:06:39:00

"We provide them with all kinds of help, food, water, warmth, medicine, clothes, we try to get them everything they need."

Hezbollah is therefore as active on the front line as it is with the refugees. It is a very powerful organization.

Hezbollah, which means the party of God, is not just an armed Islamist group.

It is also a Lebanese political party with members in Parliament.

The organization is supported mainly by the country's Shiite Muslims.

Hezbollah defends the anti-Israel line advocated by its spiritual leader Hassan Nasrallah.

The organization is allied with other armed groups such as in Yemen, Syria and Iraq.

After many negotiations with Hezbollah, we were able to interview one of its members, Sheikh Nabulsi. He agreed to receive us in the cultural center he directs.

The sheikh does not hesitate to accuse the West of complicity with Israel.

Sheikh Nabulsi, head of the Al-Zahra center in Saida 10:07:46:00 – 10:08:18:00

10:07:45:00 – 10:08:37:00

"Palestine will be entirely Palestinian's in the future. Israel will no longer exist, if not this year, it will be in the years to come. The West will realize that its colonialist policy cannot continue and that it must arrange the relationship with the Arab peoples and the region."

"There is no compromise solution in this case. The law is on the side of the Palestinians, and all those who come from Europe and elsewhere as settlers in Palestine must return home. »

Located 100 km from the Israeli border, Beirut still seems far from the conflict.

Despite the economic crisis, the daily life of the city's 2 million inhabitants seems rather peaceful.

Today, however, the population is increasingly divided.

On the one hand, the majority of Muslims, in solidarity with Palestine, are preparing for an open war with Israel.

On the other hand, Christians fear the worst.

Hezbollah's actions in the south of the country worry Samy Gmayel, leader of the Christian opposition Kataeb party.

He welcomes us in his native village of Bik Faya, in the heights of Beirut.

Sami Gamayel, Safe du Parti Kataeb 10:09 :19:00 – 10:09 :26 :00

"Thousands of Lebanese have fled their homes. The country's economy is at a standstill. »

"We see the Hezbollah militia as a problem because it holds politics hostage. We already had a problem before October 7th. But now that risk has increased. It is a risk of war. »

On the same day of the interview, Samy Gmayel received death threats from Hezbollah.

He had to leave his office in central Beirut as a matter of urgency.

"We're used to threats. Defending democracy, defending the interests of the Lebanese is risky, but we took the risk. Unfortunately, parties like Hezbollah do not believe in diversity and do not accept criticism. »

Far from the clashes, the inhabitants of Beirut walk along the Corniche.

One of their favorite places.

The memory of the 2006 war with Israel is still very much alive.

The population fears a conflagration.

Lubna, Beyrouth, 10:10:59:00 – 10:11:10:00

10:10:55:00 – 10:11:32:00

"This affects us a lot, it affects our economy. It's creating a crisis, everyone now is afraid to take a new step or start a business, we're just waiting to see what will happen in the south. The scenario of a new war will not be like any previous war. This time they're going to shave it all off. It's not just the Shiite community, it's not just in the south that there will be war, but it will be in all of Lebanon. That's what we're afraid of.

But today in Lebanon, popular support for Hamas and Hezbollah is stronger than ever.

Mounir, resident of Beirut 10:11:44:00 – 10:11:56:00

10:11:39:00 – 10:11:57:00

"No, we're not afraid. As long as the fighters remain victorious in Gaza, there is no risk in Lebanon. We are not afraid of war, everything is fine thanks to God. »

Mohammed, habitant de Beyrouth 10 :12 :00 :00 – 10 :12 :06 :00

10:11:57:00 – 10:12:07:00

"What will happen is part of God's plan. That's what it's like to die a martyr. We're not afraid. We support the citizens of Gaza and all the Palestinian people. »

As night falls over Lebanon, the country is watching closely the latest developments in the conflict in Gaza.
